LETTERS February 15, 1969 Donald E. Nichols, Jr., Editor Nappanee Advance-News Nappanee, Indiana 46550 Dear Mr. Nichols: The editorial, “We Are Alarmed”, printed February 13, 1969, is assuredly as provincial as your earlier article which prompted my first letter. (I use the same word, provincial, so as to help you avoid another trip to the dictionary as well as dissipate another of your shallow misevaluations of my motives.' Your comments, Mr. Nichols, expose the mediocrity of your mind to extejnd beyond the surface expressions of radicalism and to catch the resolving nexus of events in its larger import. Yes, Mr. Nichols, “scared to death” should be your reaction as it is also mine. But if and when death comes to each of us, I hope to die in conquest of visions exorbitantly more human than those which you presently hold. Sincerely John C. Yeager Columbia University P. S. Mr. Nichols, a long-haired undergraduate is not my present status. I wonder if my “good old campus radical period” will diminf ish as has' yours! (Editor’s note: To others of you with mediocre minds, the word exorbitant means going beyond | what is reasonable,, excessive, ex- ! travagant.) , . READ THE CLASSIFIEDS

D.E.N. Last week, we paid a tribute to some of our advertisers. We should really give belated valentine greetings to some of our loyal news sources. Especially cooperative in getting us well written, timely news, and those who think first of their little local paper and keep in mind its publishing days are the Mount Tabor Church, the B team coach, the Recreation Department, the Clerk-Treasurer, Current Club, the Home Echoes, and Lyceum Club, plus Civic Theater and the Campfire Council. There are others, including the High School music department and Milly Phillips. ★★ . ★ We are helping to entertain the assistant Mayor of Washington at a dinner party. Wrote several people in the area whom we thought would be interested in meeting him and asked them to respond. John Brademas accepted. Birch Bayh declined with regret as did the publisher of the South Bend Tribune and the Elkhart Truth. A nice letter back from Mrs. Prickett's secretary. The Mayor and the publisher in Plymouth accepted. Never heard from the Mayors of Elkhart or South Bend. ★ ★ ★ Bad press trouble last week. The web kept breaking, which means the roll of paper kept tearing. ★ ★ ★ Everyone should be on the alert for people who are stealing dogs in this area. Several have disappeared, one right from his own yard. ★ ★ ★ A card from Jack Schwartz from Sarasota. All it said, was "phooey to you too". — ■ About 90% of the elements in trees, plants and field crops are thought to be derived from the air, and balance, only, from the soil.

At the Thursday Club mother-daughter evening last week, various ladies and their daughters modeled wedding gowns. Cindy Cripe wore a dress which belonged to the mother of Mrs. Everett Evans. It was her graduation dress and was also used by one of her bridesmaids in her 1904 wedding. The dress is of sheer white lawn with a slight bustle. Kathy Culp wears address from the late 1800s or early 1900s. It is a rose paisley print and comes from the period when the hour glass figure was in vogue. Kathy's mother, Mrs. Fred Culp, bought the gown from an antique dealer to wear for one of her book reviews.

Eos! Side Story By Sue McKee
It was a tough game Saturday night, but our guys have nothing to be ashamed of. As they say, “It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.” Keep it up. gang, especially against Bremen next week. Congratulations to Cynthia Biever and Nancy Maust who were selected to be Girls’ State Representatives. They will attend a one ■week seminar from June .14 to June 21 to learn about self-govern-ment. The highlight of this trip will be a mock election in which the girls will campaign for different offices from governor to garbage collector. Congratulations also to the people who received superior at the State Contest. These people in elude Cheryl Etsinger, drum solo; Carol Armantrout, violin solo; and the trombone quartet, Lynn Frederick, Don Rohrer, Gene Zercher, and John Roose. Last Saturday the group traveled to Butler University in Indianapolis where the contest was held. Everyone did well, however, these were the only superiors given (this also included the voice contest). The Prom committees are being formed. As it stands now, the Prom will be held April 18 at the Elkhart Hotel. The theme, decorations and band committees have already been named and are beginning to get organized. Good luck against Bremen, Bulldogs. We know you can do it!
