LETTERS December, 1968 Dear Friends, Anew year lie;s ahead. A year which will present many joys and opportunities and, of course, many trials and heartaches. Life is made up of both sunshine and rain and we need both to grdw in the Lord. So let us keep our hand in His and walk in confidence that our God is alive and will lead each one of us in His perfect wil^ -Christmas here in Texas is just a 'bit different than back home in Indiana. The day was warm and sunny and we had the doors and windows'open. It is very-pleasant but" Brent and Terry miss the snow. Doesn't seem like Christrpas without it. Christmas Day in Mexico is the twenty-fourth. The Millers and we spent the afternoon at Jose Delgado where we were served the favorite Mexican fiesta dish, tamales! By the end of the day vve had been served tamales three times and had some sent home with us. We are hoping that we won’t see a tamale a while! After service at Jose Delgado, each family received a warm blanket and the children'were given a little gift. Then we all traveled on to El Realito for the evening service after which each family also received a’ blanket and each, child a candy treat. A day or two later we again loaded the truck with blankets and headed for Empalme. And so ended a busy but happy Christmas week. Everyone was so happy for the blankets they received. They really appreciated that you thought of them. May Carlyle and I thank you all for making these gifts possible. It is wonderful the way

you responded and shared with your Mexican brethren. God l)less you. Thank you so very much for the lovely cards, notes, letters and gifts you sent; We have enjoyed hearing from every one. of you. Do keep praying for us and for the people in Mexico. Write soon. Happy New Year, Carlyle, Freida, Brent, and Terry Welty January 6, 1969 Dear Mr. Nichols. Perhaps this letter should be directed to the Parks and Recreation Department of bur community, but since you were very influential in our community, finally -obtaining a well planned, well supervised and maintained swimming pool, I believe you could help us achieve the same type of program for winter activity. I am sure other families have children with ice skates they received as a gift for Christmas, still in the box because there is no local skating place. I remember last year when announcement was made through the Advance News that anew liner for the rink was purchased and the pond would be flooded, but if it was damaged, that would be the end of provisions for ice skating. Apparently that is what happened. How did anyone get inside to damage this or was it done during open skating hours? There is a high fence around the pond and a gate to be locked when the pond - isri’t open. If we can have a supervised swimming program why can’t an ice pond be supervised? The danger" of bodily injury is as great or greater on ice skates than in swimming. If someone is injured, there is no close phone service

there and not a good place to put skates on or get warm. . I realize the days or nights may be few to use a facility such as this. In neighboring communities the ice is artificially frozen so it doesn’t have to be zero in order to get ice good enough to skate on. Too much trouble and expense? Our pool is artificially heated so it is more comfortable when the weather man doesn’t Cooperate, so I think we could have the same for skating. I am glad to live in Nappanee and appreciate the fine recreational facilities we have, but I hope we can have an ice pond too for our children and even some adults who enjoy skating. Signed Hopeful Nappanee Advance-News 156 West Market Street Nappanee, - Indiana Dear Mr. Nichols, It was very gratifying to receive a letter from a serviceman, thanking the GET-TOGETHER Club for one of the Ditty bags packed by them. It was- received by me on January 4 and was dated December 29, 1968. The letter is as follows: Dear Mrs. Freet, My name is Bill Finney. I was fortunate to receive package. The box packed by your club came to my unit which is an Infantry Battalion. ;I myself am a Medic assigned to Air Station. All of us would like to thank you for the thoughtfulness and interest you good people have given us. We are a front line unit and all the gifts are just what we can use. Thank you again for the gifts. Bill P. S. My unit is located about 15 miles S. W. of Saigon. I would very much like to share this letter with the rest of the community of Nappanee. Mrs. William Freet Don, I would like to say a big “thank you” to all the people in Nappanee, who sent me their good wishes over the holidays. Especially the American Region Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, Ron’s Bakery, the United Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club who is sending the paper over to me. O course, you all rea^ize‘"that , Christmas is a rough time to be away from home. But, we try to make the best of it. And being remembered by friends back home certainly helps. I am trying to keep up on the happenings back there, although I often get the paper 2 weeks after it is published. As far as naming the new school, any name is fine with me, as long as it is not named “Da Nang.” Well, -thanks again, people of Nappanee, and I*hope that it is a very good New Year for all of you. Sincerely Yours, L/Cpl. Thomas D. Black, USMC Da Nang, RVN
