Box 1225 San Juan, Texas 78589 October, 1968 Buenos Dias Amigos, The Lord has been moving in a woftdertul way, especially at Empahfte. In one service, there Were six who accepted JeSus as their Saviour and testify to assurance and peace in their hearts. We Sense by the Spirit that this Work, now five months old, is being firmly established in the Lord. What a thrill to stand back and see God do the Work he has promised to do! To 'the delight of the boys and girls at Empalme, we are now having a weekly Bible class. How they love it! It is so easy to teach them scripture verses and Bible stories but, of course, amidst many wiggles. The Christians at Jose Delgado have started to build their church. Bro. Miller and Carlyle helped them dig thirty holes for posts and then place the posts for the foundation. They are now working on the frame. Since they have had the services outside for a year, they are anxious to have the church completed before cold weather. The Lord has again answered prayer by saving two men of this village, one of whom donated the land for the church. They had been very faithful in attehding the services for months blit only now have made a public decision for Jesus. Needless to say, we are all rejoicing to see God speaking to hearts and bringing them to a knowledge of His saving grace. The Millers and we have been distributing winter clothing this past month. The people at Jose Delgado and Empalme have already received coats, etc. and soon we will take clothing to the other missions. Some of you have asked what we plan to do for Christmas in Mexico. We feel that instead of giving toys to the children this year, it would be of greater value

to give each family a ‘blanket. If you could see their huts, you would understand even more why they need blankets. The huts are built of mud and sticks or of boards and are completely Without heat. So perhaps, you would like to help make a Mexican family’s Christmas a happy one by giving a blanket or a quilt. Thank you so much. Do pray for us. We want to see God move in a greater way in Mexico. Unless He does the work, human efforts are useless for only He can touch a heart. Write soon! Que Dios les bendiga, Carlyle and Freida Welty and boys Dear Editor, Please let’s tell parents no private parties for kids (under 18) that last after 10:30 p.m. on any night. If the party stops at 10:30 that should give the operator of the motor vehicle time to take bis date home and then return to his home: by 11 p.m. Otherwise the Taffy Apple Patrol, alert and waiting in the street will pick them up. Charge curfew violation. You as a parent will be phoned and asked to come and get them. Now get this: If you are gone, out to dinner, out of town —and cannot be reached by phone, your boy or girl will be driven to Goshen (by 2 officers ,yet) and put in “general lock-up” with all the drunks, thieves and those guilty of crimes worse than that. No shoes, money or rings, as they are taken by Goshen officers as a protective measure. In other words, the full criminal treatment. Don’t laugh don’t say, “It can’t happen here”. It did. Saturday night after a private party, the young people started their cars to drive home, after 11 p.m. and they saw the local police turn around and drive through an alley in order to intercept them. They were taken to the police station parents were phoned and one lad whose parents were out of town, did get the trip and lock-up in Goshen. Now really the kids had watched Olympics had pepsi and taffy apples. The girl had called her folks to tell them where she was. They were farther from home at the police station than they were when picked up. One was only a block from his house the other 2 blocks. How can this type of ill-manag-ed authority be tolerated? Are you always available to be reached by phone? Could this happen to your boy or girl? Must we put up with this treatment? It should never have happened here. It must never happen again. Many people know about this and they are outraged over this wanton, arrogant, reckless police action. Very Concerned
October 23, 1968 Dear Don; After being a part of the Nappanee community for almost sixteen years, I feel that I know something about it. The community has made us feel Welcome and that we ate a part of it. The schools made our boys glad to be a part of theth. It would be hard to thank each one personally for this friendship that they have given so freely, but maybe this letter will let them know we are glad we ever came to Nappanee. This does not mean that everything is ideal or good. Evil is no respecter of persons or communities. It is to the needy 'that Jesus sends his church to minister to, land when the church is faithful in this ministry, the community will support it. I feel that the real danger to our community comes from the lack of Christian example among our adults. Most youth have sown some wild oats in their time, but now we have the adults leading the way in things that are wrong. Too many homes are stocked with liquor, which makes it easy for youth to get. Too many homes are only convenient to go when there is nothing else to do. May God help us to open our eyes to the blessings we have, and to guard them for our children. Someone has said, “We have enough victories to know that God is still with us, and enough defeats to know he is still working through humanity. For my wife and I, again I say thanks to a great community. Sincerely, Rev. Robert Fields Dear Mr. Nichols, It is time the local community is aroused from their slumber. I raise these questions: With a full Republican Council, how come so little is done? We were told with an all Republican Council that things in Nappanee could get done. What things? The meetings (according to your reporting) are short and almost seem cozy. Mr. Sinclair sure made this administration look inadequate Annexation City Municipal building advanced planning for future parks and needed recreation areas City Court. what has the present administration done to further and develop the scope of these Democratic inspired programs? The big question is why these elected officials are able to stalemate one or another of the previous administration’s policies. Some of the lingo used is “we must examine it further” Either by design or indecision we are faced with a “no policy” policy making council! There are many things waiting to be done. Farsighted merchants once again are going ahead with their plans. However, our willynilly Board of Works is reluctant to stand up and ask the questions that should be asked and the council is so dedicated to its “posterity” that it neither queries or questions its own members. Instead it is, calm the water and let’s don’t do anything to rock the boat. Wake up voters Wake up Mr. Nichols Shine the light of the newspaper on the placid council ask them to stop side-step-ping and do as they promised to move forward. ■I hope you print this A Citizen

Route 1, Box 92 Nappanee, Indiana October 27, 1968 Dear Mr. Nichols: fcve read and reread the letter in this week’s paper concerned with today’s youth. I’m not sure I understand j all this person is trying to say, but I feel I should speak out and perhaps by so doing I can be of assistance. In ending the letter, this person asked us to quit pretending and be completely hottest no matter how it hurts, and I reiterate that point. Yes. let’s be honest, youth and adults alike. Let’s listen to each other and try to understand each other. If we have problems or troubles, and need help there are many places and persons to whom we can go to seek help. That is, if we really want help. Off hand, I can think of 6 places: a minister, a doctor, Oaklawn Center, guidance counselors, school nurse or teacher, your parent and YOU. The last of these is the first and most important. For you are the one that has to do the work. You have to want to solve or alleviate the problem. All anyone else can do is to try to give you a fresh opinion or advice or help guide you to a solution, but no one can point blank dictate the answer to you. (And the advice given may not be what you want to hear.) You have to make the decision (1) whether or not you will follow the advice given and (2) which advice you will follow, if any. But the point is, once the decision is made, that decision is your decision and not the person’s who suggested it. Consequently, you must live with your decision, right or wrong, t When one seeks advice, it takes courage. For you’ve opened yourself to criticism (perhaps in the form of gossip). But it also means you acquire respect and a certain amount of admiration for you’ve had the courage to admit to yourself that you need help. When you can do this, you are on the road to improvement and happiness. “On Their Side” appeared to be concerned about losing friends when one has erred. If you lose a friend because of this, I am tempted to say that that friend was not a friend in the first place. But, it seems there are more conditions to consider. It may depend on how good a friend you have been. For life is a two-way street. We each have to give a little in order to receive. Let us be honest with ourselves. Oftett- we lack a friend in time ©flheld because we ourselves have not made the effort to be a friend in the past. Let’s not be too critical of others without first looking at ourselves. Also realize that a friend has the risk of getting hurt, just by being a friend. Sincerely, Amy Berger AMERICAN WAR MOTHERS The American War Mothers will meet Tuesday November 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Home.
