Attorney General Lists Abandoned Personal Property Attorney General John J. Dillon has released the names of persons who may be owners of intangible personal property which has been reported to his office as abandoned. (These names appear in the legal notice section of our paper.) Mr. Dillon is advertising these names in an attempt to locate the owners. If the owners cannot be located after the advertisement, the persons now holding the property must turn it over to the State. Owners may still claim their property after the State has taken custody of it. The State holds the property until . the owner or his -heirs claim ity—. Dillon said that approximately four and one half million dollars were reported, most of which represents unclaimed bank accounts and utility deposits. However, Dillon added that some of the money represents unclaimed wages, dividends, gift certificates and other types of intangible personal property. The advertisement is the result of a law passed by the last General Assembly. Financial institutions and other business must report to the state intangible personal property which is presumed abandoned. Property is presumed abandoned if unclaimed for seven years or longer and the owner cannot be located .The names of the owners die advertised by the Attorney General in the county of their last known address. If no address is known the name is advertised in the county of the holder. If the property is still unclaimed it must j be turned over to the state. The money will be deposited in the i Common School Fund. Attorney General Dillon said that “It was the intent of the new law that the abandoned property be used for the benefit of all the people of Indiana until such time as the owner claims his property. The money which l’emains unclaimed will be put to good use in the Indiana Common School ! Fund.” The State Constitution re- ; quires that abandoned or unclaim- ! ed money be deposited in the Comi mon School Fund. As the result of the effort of the banks, savings and loan institutions, credit unions and other holders in attempting to locate owners before reporting the property to the State, Dillon pointed out, large sums of money have al-

ready been returned to the rightful owners or their heirs; Many of these were accounts which people had just forgotten about. The setting up of the' new department to handle the reports has not been an easy matter. It was necessary to confer with and set up procedures with the State treasurer, Auditor, State Board of Accounts and the State data processing department. Without the use of the State’s computer the processing of the 5,0Q0 reports and the names of some 17,000 owners would have been difficult. Most of the conversion of-the-data on the reports into the computer was done by the Department of Revenue after they had completed their regular work. “Dillon said that this is a good example of intergovernmental > cooperation which has resulted in the savings of a substantial amount of money for the 'state.” Dillon also pointed out thltt the new law will help persons find money left by deceased relatives. Often a person will deposit money in various banks around the. State. When he dies no one knows about the accounts and they remain in the banks indefinitely. Under the new Act the property which is unclaimed for at least seven years is reported to the Attorney General who advertises the owner’s name in the county of his last known address in an attempt to locate him or has heirs. If the money is still unclaimed it is turned over to the state. The property is held in the Common School fund until the owner or his heirs claim it.
