election, I have had time and opportunity to look back over the past four years and evaluate them from a personal viewpoint. I feel it would be a fine thing if every person in Nappanee could serve on the city council for at least one term and thus be made aware of city government and all it entails. There is much work done and time spent that it is not possible for the average citizen to realize unless in some way involved in city government. I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years on the city council and have been most gratified to have had a part in what „I consider the most progressive council to function in ma-

| ny years. This bi-partisan council 1 under the capable leadership of Pat Sinclair worked well together and must be credited with good ''.government and many improvements for our community. I am sure all those who served feel as I do about this and are also humbly grateful for their role in the part administration . This city now has a mayor and council of the same political party and I am sure every citizen should and does wish them the best in their transacting the business of the community, for we are all vitally interested in the welfare of our city. I am very concerned, though, about some decisions which have been handed down recently. For example, the previous council spent months, even years of study and investigation before deciding on a location for anew city hall and municipal building. In a very short time this plan has apparently been scrapped in favor of an old, poorly loc-

ated building which would have to be completely gutted and rebuilt. Dose the council really feel that this is what the of Nappanee want? Further, I am very disturbed about another matter. It was decided, without the knowledge and consent of the full council, to abolish prayer before council meetings. I do not know how this came about, but I do know that the council is definitely not in accord over this action. All major agencies of state and federal government prelude their sessions with prayer to Almighty God for wisdom and guidance in dealing with the multiple problems of today. When I approached one member of the council as to the reason for discontinuing prayer, he could only say, “Well, we never did it before”. But in the next breath freely admitted the need for divine guidance. Could it be that this body of elected and appointed officials, all members of, and in-

volved in, church work in the community, are so wise and self-suf-ficient they need not invoke the Lord’s blessing and guidance? Is this practice of pre-meeting prayer wrong because it was inspired ard instituted under a conscientious mayor of another party? In the pest four years, I know of matters of importance and of a controversial nature that were discharged with dignity and order because of the presence of prayer. It is my sincere hope that this matter will be reconsidered and a reversal of opinion be forthcoming. Every citizen of Nappanee and resident of the surrounding area should be proud, and justifiably so, of the cleanliness, orderliness, and spirit of progress evident in this city. All of our city departments and agencies, such as the Police Dept, under Dean Middaugh; Pete Moore’s Street Dept., Fire Dept, with Ward Walteite as Chief; Water Dept, under Jim Callander; Dean Geyer’s Park Dept., Park and Recreation Board; Planning Comm., etc. all excel and are to be commended, each one, for their fine work and devotion. In this city and surrounding area we have many Churches represented, so may we all strive to live as a people representing a Christian community. I thank God for Nappanee, and for the privilege of living and raising my family in this fine city. May our present City Administration fully realize the immense responsibility they now have. ; Strictly Personal • D.E.N. In D'Bulldog, they carry interviews with various students. We can't believe the number who claim that "Valley of the Dolls" is their favorite movie. Are they pulling our legs? ★ ★ ★ In the new Burns Mantle book with the best plays of the year, there is a truly sad assortment. One deals with two weird women, one of whom punishes the other by making her eat a cigar butt. Another deals with a play producer who thinks he can get anew impact for a play by having a middle oged man appear nude on the stage. Had enough? ★ ★ ★ We are drooling with envy ovir the new equipment of our neighbors at the Milford MailJournal. Their first paper printed on it was beautiful. We always thought they had a good looking paper before, but this should certainly help. The A-N has only a few problems money, lack of •pace, and the fact that present equipment is too new to be discarded. ★ ★ ★ A meeting in Indianapolis last week. A flat tire in 10 above zero weather. The meeting included several newspaper men from around the State. Those in rural areas reported that business has really been slack. ★ ★ ★ Virginia Bloomfield loaned us the November 29, 1937 copy of Life Magazine which included two pages about Nappanee. There was a letter from former Democratic Mayor, Walter C. Uline, to Congressman Sam Pettengill expressing doubts over what would happen to small business under the New Deal. Mr. Uline, starting to wonder if he had voted right, said that he would leave FDR's picture on his office wall "a while longer". ★ ★ ★ Another interesting item. Geo. Rose loaned us a section of the South Bend Tribune commemorating the 100th anniversary of Studebaker in 1952. For anyone who's interested in cars, there were some fine pictures including some of the wagons Studebaker used to make. .libivbl ‘.-.I V ★ ★ ★ Then Joy Bourne** 'bought in some old pictures of Nappanee's square before it was paved. It shows Kaufman's Department Store on one corner and the Auditorium on the other. Several of Mrs. Bourne's pictures were borrowed and plates made of them for use in our Centennial section in six years. ★ ★ ★ We found ourselves rooting for Elkhart at the start of Saturday's game and then switching to Penn mid-way. ★ ★ ★ A letter from former publisher, Rita Myers, from Durban, South Africa. She's on a world cruise and seems to be having quite a trip. A sure and proven way to get that new fur coat seems to be to change husbands.

TALK OF I THE TOWN 1 ■' BY BARBARA REISER 1 773-4583 | Mr. Charles Wysong, a resident of the LuAnn Nursing Home, celebrated his 90th birthday Sunday, and was honored by his children et a birthday dinner at the home of the Charles Reprogles. Mr; Wysong has four living children; Mrs. Charles Reprogle, Mrs. Arlene Shively and Jay and Cleo Wysong. The home now occupied by Jay has been in the Wysong family since 1845. Mr. Wysong received a special gift on his birthday. His grandson and wife, the Steve Shivelys, presented him with a great granddaughter. A Deputation team consisting of five Manchester College students, presented the worship service at the Nappanee Church of the Brethren Sunday. The worship leader was Jim Andrews of Nappanee. At noon, the team joined the youth and young adult groups and sponsors for a fellowship dinner. Approximately 40 were present. Mrs. George Janssen and Mrs. Ed Hepler are back in Nappanee after a thirteen day trip to Florida. The ladies visited Mrs. Janssen’s sister and husband, the Ralph Sawyers in West Palm Beach and a brother, the Elmer Lehmans, at Englewood. They also were reacquainted with many of their Bourbon friends at Avon Park and visited cousins at Ft. Myers and St. Petersburg. At West Palm Beach, they went sightseeing and at Palm Beach they visited the late President Kennedy’s church, which had a gold plaque on the Kennedy pew. Other activities included a trip to the Joseph Kennedy Florida home, gathering shells and wading in the ocean. Although they experienced some cold weather and at one point had to help chase an alligator off the road, the ladies very much enjoyed their vacation. The return trip home brought them through Kentucky and the mountains, where they saw numerous coal mines and miner’s shacks. 1 Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Phillips were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Brown, Mrs. Bertha Sechrist of Mishawaka, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Bolt and son, Rick.
