Bulldogs Take On Manchester And Penn After a fine win over LaVille last Saturday, the Nappanee Bulldogs head into the last 2 game weekend of the season with trips to Manchester on Friday and to Penn on Saturday. The Friday contests will start at regular times (6:30 and 8:00 p.m.), but the Saturday games will be one half hour later (7:00 and 8:30 p.m.), due to the time difference between the two schools. Manchester’s capabilities were well demonstrated last Saturday when they trimmed Warsaw 61-53 at Manchester. The Squires are lacking in size, but rebound well in spite of their handicap.

NAPPANEE ADVANCE-NEWS

Veteran forward Andy Butterbaugh is the tallest man on the squad at 6-1. The other forward spot is shared by 6-0 Dennis Greer or 6-0 Joe Simons. 5-11 Rex Guthrie, ineligible last year, plays the center position and is an outstanding jumper. 5-9 Randy Miller is a hustling guard with flashy hands. He gets help from 5-7 Ron Kara who is a good ball handler. Coach Karl Meritt’s squad runs a “shuffle” offense and is noted for its tight scrappy defense. The Penn Kingsmen under a new coach, Jim Miller of Cloverdale fame, also run a shuffle offense, but there the weekend opponents’ similarities end. Penn has good size spearheaded by 6-7 center, Gary Shanklin. Veteran forward John Minne stands 6-0 and is a complete ball player as he defends, rebounds, and scores well. 6-0 Doug Freeman plays the other forward spot. Penn’s guards are speedy and well disciplined. They run the team through an intricate continuity almost methodically. Letterman Tim Clark stands 5-8 and is very quick and shoots well. His hustling mate, Ron Whitney, is 5-9 and also shoots very well. Coach Miller’s crew has risen from mediocrity to excellence in one year and is ranked right along with Elkhart as a team to beat in the local sectional. The Kingsmen’s record is 114 including a 71-54 trouncing of South Bend Adams last Saturday. Penn mixes its offenses and defenses, but generally defend more with zones than man-to-man defense. Nappanee Coach Keith Dougherty commented, “We think our boys are improving with each ball game. Our offense has been very (adequate as we have averaged 67 points in our last three games. Now our defense must tighten, and we must outrebound our opponents. We feel our team will accept the challenge of this weekend.” Work and save —and some day, you’ll be able to divide up with those who have done neither.

Bulldogs Lose A Close One To Plymouth Friday Nappanee lost a hard' fought basketball game to Plymouth Friday 71 to 67. In 3pite of losing, they all played a good aggressive game. It was a close game all the way, although the Bulldogs never led after going ahead 10 to 8. They tied it up three times in the third quarter, however, and the score was 46 to 46 at one point. Plymouth never led by more than five in the fourth quarter. Doug Chokey racked up 18 points before fouling out in the last seventeen seconds. Denny Arnott had a good night with 18, and Steve Walters came up with 17. Malcolm McDonald got 12. The Nappanee squad did a good job on rebounds, but had difficulty making their free throws where it counted. Merl Wise saw some brief action. Actually, Nappanee fans kept hoping that the Bulldogs were going to hang in there and ultimately take over. A few breaks might have made that possible. Nappanee (67) Player FG FT PF TP M. Nappanee Beats LaVille Saturday The Nappanee Bulldogs v got back into their winning ways Saturday by beating a good LaVille team 68 to 52. They got off to a slow start, but their momentum picked up in the middle of the second quarter. At one point in the first quarter, they had to overcome a ten point deficit. In that second quarter, they demonstrated a defense which was aggressive and effective and managed to put LaVille off their stride. The end of the half showed that the Bulldogs had things under control. The second half saw some neat deception by Steve Walters as he lured his opponents to the wrong end of the floor Steve Walters was Nappanee’s high scorer with 17 and also fine on defense. Denny Arnott got 14 points, and he did a good job on the boards. Jerry Shaw, Doug Chokey, and Dave Hoffer played good aggressive games and showed some good ball handling. Malcolm McDonald, Denny Miller, Bob Waterson, Merl Wise, and Gene Zercher rounded out the Bulldog attack.
