LETTERS Dear Sir: In your “Strictly Personal” column this week there is an article pertaining to a gift of Jim Newcomer’s made out of an Amish horse’s mane. Now you probably know a lot about Amish people by this time, but what about that Amish horse? Mrs. Gilbert Lee Miller VISIT SILVER SPRINGS Mr. Daniel V. East Side Daze By John Hinton Recently in the junior U. S. History Classes a committee was established to select! candidates for a “Man of the Year” contest. The winner would then be submitted to the contest held by Time magazine. Nominations were The Fighting Man in Viet Nam; Dr. Barnard and his surgical team; Cardinal Spellman; President Johnson; the Negro Politicians; Charles de Gaulle; and the cartoon character, George of the Jungle. The winner was the Fighting Man in Viet Nam. Unfortunately for the Juniors their letter to Time magazine was never printed. Time’s selection as their “Man of the Year” was LBJ. Surprised? The Spanish dlub is planning their annual Valentine’s Day party to be February 14 at the Eby Pines restaurant in Bristol. The fiesta will consist of dinner, skits presented by the students, a raffle, contests, and will conclude

with two hours of roller skating. The Spani h Club has been busy selling concessions at the basketball games with the Pep Club to earn the money for this activity. Skiing this year must be rather good. This time last year NHS had five people on crutches. Many students have been taking advantage of the snow and zero weather at Mount Wawasee. Even some teachers of NHS have been spotted in the ski lodge enjoying the atmosphere. So far Editor Nichols has rounded up only 15 better presidents than former President Harry Truman. He still needs 5 more to complete his challenge of “20 presidents better than Truman” for the NHS history department. The kids have been working hard studying cramming this past week. I suggest they deserve a few little extras this weekend from you parents like breakfast in bed, several.new record albums, possibly a little extra gas in the car for Saturday night, and those new turtle neck sweaters they wlant...

D.E.N. Dog Pepper has a little friend who can squeeze through a small opening in the fence. He alarmed the whole neighborhood recently with his yelps when he got stuck on the way out. , ★ ★ ★ The bird feeding tray has been busy. Besides sparrows, starlings, and grackles, there have been nuthatches, a titmouse, cardinals, jays, and a (we think) downy woodpecker. But there hasn't been one chickadee. Why? ★ ★ * Last week was a bad week complicated by the Monday Holiday. Then we had serious press trouble on Wednesday afternoon after the first section was printed. ★ ★ ★ No point in continuing needling Roy Slagle because neither of us will give an inch. However, in connection with the Chicago Fire, it's interesting to note that, on that same weekend, there was a terrible fire at Peshtigo, Wisconsin. Actually, in terms of money and the duration of the fire, it was worse than Mrs. O'Leary's blaze. ★ ★ ★ Pin a rose on us. All the tax forms for the year are done. ★ ★ ★ On the subject of taxes, that intangibles tax in Indiana still makes us mad. Actually, people are being penalized for their holdings over and over again. —- / ★ ★ ★ Republicans got an extra jolt this week. Not only was there a postal increase, but the new six cent stamps have a grinning picture of FDR. From the looks of the stamp, however, a Republican must have painted the portrait. ★ ★ ★ Pulling down the window shade or placing newspapers between house plants and the window will protect them from cold night temperatures, say Purdue University extension horticulturists. The Bulldogs have really been turning in some respectable performances and there are people who may be thinking of ways to make room in the trophy case for a sectional, tourney trophy. Regardless of future games, the team has proven itself to fans, who have high hopes for the remainder of this season. There was a small crowd at Stauffer Park Saturday evening for the Jaycees sponsored Twelfth Night Service. Rev. Robert Fields addressed the group, the trees were burned t and hot chocolate and coffee were served. It would be nice for this service to become an annual event in Nappanee. Mrs. Russell W. Ervin honored her daughter, Brenda, at a birthday party in celebration of her fourth birthday, Saturday. Those present for playtime and refreshments in addition to Brenda, and her sister Beth Ann, were LeAnn Rohr, Scott, Debbie and Stanley Beehler, Rae Lynn and Ryan Worden, Rodney Yoder, Lee Ann and Dee Ann Housour, Debbie and Tim Carothers and Kim Reiser. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Showalter and daughter returned Friday after a two week’s vacation in Phoenix, Arizona. While there, they visited Janet’s parents, the Robert Smiths whom they hadn’t seen in two years. They also visited Tucson and saw where the TV series “High Chapparel” is filmed. At the airport the Showalters saw Mrs. Everett Hollow, who had also traveled to Phoenix to visit her son, Ron, and his wife. Another former resident of Nappanee, Jack Breidenstine, who formerly served at the Brethren Service Center, now is married and lives in Glendale, where he is pastor of a church there. The Breidenstines have a baby daughter born in November. The Showalters reported a very pleasant trip, but were a bit dismayed to find their furnace out of order when they arrived home, and a bowl of guppies frozen solid. The Levi Tobias family were visitors to the South for Christmas

After stopping at Chattanooga and Lookout Mt., Tennessee, they traveled to Jackson, Alabama, to spend Christmas with Mrs. Tobias’ brother, the Don Arnott, Jr. family. En route to Florida, the f Tobiases stopped in Mobile, Alabama, to tour the battleship USS Alabama. While in Florida, they saw an orange juice factory, Silver Springs, Cypress Gardens, St. Augustine, toured Cape Kennedy and Key West, swam and gathered shells from the ocean. One morning, while in Homestead, Fla., the family visited with the Ross Gwin family, who were vacationing and were on their way to the Everglades National Park. The Gwins reside in Florida and did not envy the Tobiases return to snow and cold weather. A wonderful time was had by the entire family, but all were glad to be home, in spite of cold weather. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lakins, Philadelphia, and her mother, Mrs. Hugh Anderson, Watha, North Carolina, have returned home after spending 3 days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parcell.
