Mr. Donat'd E. Nichols Nappanee Advance-News 156 W. Market St. Nappanee, Indiana Dear Don: I thought I should write you and express my feelings on the tremendous progress the uptown people are showing in fixing up Nappanee and making the downtown section more attractive. I was amazed at what has been accomplished in our Nappanee trading area. This is certainly noticeable to the people coming into Nappanee and you can see our Nappanee merchants are cooperating and working together to create a better place in which to shop. I found in talking with some of my friends that everyone seems to have togetherness attitude in working toward accomplishing a good looking city. This is certainly of interest to industries coming into your community to see this. I have enjoyed the Nappanee people for some 15 years and it is hard to believe that Blue Bell has been in operation in Nappanee this long. I want to express my appreciation for the fine work that has been accomplished on the improvement of the fronts of the stores. The new look is real attractive. The flowers that have been placed on the streets, the new trees and the new lights have certainly given Nappanee anew look and you are to be commended along with other business people on this new look. I was real proud to see the work that had been done and thought I should write you. You may feel

free to express my feeling to any of your people up and down the street. We are happy to be a part of Nappanee. Very truly yours, BLUE BELL. Inc. Roy E. Duncan, Div. Mgr. Oct. 6, 1967 Dear Editor, Imagine my consternation last week, when I read the three ads placed in the Advance-News by the Nappanee Republican Organization. They were all three the utmost in bad taste, no one can make himself white by blackening another. After seeing this diatribe, I am ashamed to be registered as a Republican. This organization must represent somebody, but it doesn’t represent me. Nappanee needs a forward going program, but what evidence do we have of it in the first three official statements of this organization? What is the program of this Nappanee Republican Organization, or is it possible they have no platform, only ridicule for a fellow Nappanee citizen? I would like to assure you, Mr. Nichols, that I am not afraid of being contaminated by your correspondent in Michigan City prison. If he ever decides to get a job and go straight, I’d certainly say he is more than welcome in Nappanee. I’d be willing to help in any way I can. Jesus gave us a beautiful precedent in dealing with the erring, when He said, “neither do I .condemn thee, go and sin no more.” Sincerely, Irvin G. Kanode
Box 1225 San Juan, Texas 78589 September, 1967 Dear Friends, Ps. 56: 3, “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee,” came to my mind as we watched Hurricane Beulah lash her fury here in Rio Grande Valley. We saw fierce winds that whipped and uprooted trees and had to wonder if our house would hold together. These winds lasted for hours and one never quite knew what would happen next. Following the hurricane we had heavy rains and severe water damage and flooding here in the Valley. We have been without electricity for six days now and are using chafing candles to warm up food and also candles for light. However, there are many in the same situation and thousands whose lot is much worse. So we praise the Lord for his mercy and help. It has been quit a week and it will be a long time until recovery is complete. The people in Mexico suffer terribly in these disasters. Three Mexican women, desperate for help, came forty miles, walking considerable part of the way. So Milo Miller, Jim Littleton, and Carlyle took food and clothing to their village of Empalme. Many of their homes are washed away by the heavy rains and flooding leaving them with nothing. The people took shelter in the public school and others were living on trucks with a canvas stretched over the top to keep out the rain. The first of this month the village ladies, several other missionary brethren, and Carlyle helped the Highs clean and prepare the Bible School building at Charco Azul for this year’s session. The school opened September 5 and has 17 students enrolled. Pray for these young people as they begin this new year of Bible study. Our family is in school again. Brent is in the fifth grade, Terry is in the second, and Carlyle and I are in language school studying Spanish. In addition to our morning classes, we are taking two evening classes, one of which is the Laubach Reading and Writing Method. In this class we are learning how to teach Mexicans to read and write in a short but

highly effective course. We have found so many unable to read and when they accept the Lord, they want to read their Bibles. So if we can help them to learn to read, this will in turn enable them to grow spiritually as they study the Word of God for themselves. We are so glad for your letters and the news from home. So do write soon again. Thank you for remembering to pray for us. We want only the perfect will of the Lord in our lives as we seek him for the needs of Mexico. We thank you also for your help and interest in the work. Your Missionaries to Mexico, Carlyle and Freida Welty 600 E. Seminary St. Greencastle, Indiana 46135 October 6, 1967 Gentlemen: I am trying to locate a community named “Haven Run” which I believe to be in the vicinity of Nappanee, Ind., perhaps too small to be included on a road map. Do you have knowledge of such a community? I have a muzzle-loading, heavy match rifle made and signed by a “W. McClellan or McClelland Haven Run find where this man lived and worked. If you find any helpful information please contact me. Sincerely, J. L. Anderson Advance-News Mr. Don Nicholsr Since when has it become necessary for the Republican Party to sling mud to maintain or get votes? I have been a republican a long time, but was far from pleased at the three large “spreads” in last week’s paper downgrading Mayor Sinclair. You know you cannot throw mud without getting some on your fingers. This is once when your plans have back-fired. And it is just possible, Mr. Mayor that you will have another vote. Name Withheld Oct. 6, 1967 Dear Mr. Nichols: You are not alone on your feel-
ing about sending Bth and 9th graders to school in Wakarusa next year. I am strictly against this also. We have a school here in Nappanee to send these 306 children to. When this wonderful, beautiful new high school is finished and completed; then do the big, big job of shuffling around. But there is no point to it now. It sounds nuts to me, too. Sincerely, Margaret A. Marchand Advance-News Office Nappanee, Indiana Dear Editor: I always read the “Strictly Personal” column, and was more than pleased to see that we are not the only ones who are opposed to sending our Junior High kids over to Wakarusa next year! We just had to let you know that we DO CARE about this situation. So, Nappanee, won’t you please have a heart? ? ? Let’s at least keep our children in our own home town. Name Withheld Strictly Personal D.E.N. In a recent issue of the South Bend Tribune, there was an article about Betty Habbegger, whose husband was band director here at one time. The article tells of how she is raising three children, is a home economics teacher, organist at church, and director of four children's and young people's choirs. She's also active in PTA, Girl Indian Guides, and School Men's Wives Club, and she makes candles for Christmas gifts. ★ ★ ★ Several suggestions for a project for Nappanee have been received, Many indicate that a junior college might be a worthy goal. Several say that we need a community building. Two have suggested a medical clinic to supplement the existing hospitals. One wondered about an apartment area for senior citizens with reasonable rent. ★ ★ ★ Claudia Zehring, who is a niece

It's impossible to figure out how it could have happened. Hope it didn't inconvenience too many. _ ★ ★ ★ Had a big weekend at Purdue. Saw Denny and Debbie Yoder, ran into Mike Stump on the campus, saw Bill Hostetler at a distance. Had dinner with Kerry Miller and Duncan Sinclair, then went to 1 lunch at Duncan's fraternity house before the Purdue-N. U. game. We were greatly impressed with Purdue. One very evident fact is < that there is a minimum of hippies or beatniks on the campus. Everyone looked most normal. One big thrill was watching the great Purdue band practicing on Friday. Couldn't find Dave Marchand in that big mob. VFW AUXILIARY The Wednesday meeting of the VFW Auxiliary was opened last week by president June Silvers. A check for cancer fund, and checks for scholarship fund, national homes, flag fund, and general hospital fund were sent as well as money to provide supply shelves at the Indiana Soldiers 1 Home. The Club voted to send Christmas packages to Nappanee boys in service and to make cookies and candy for them. Five members attended the District meeting in Plymouth Sunday. Methuselah, we are told, lived a tong time bult we are not toild that he accomplished anything else.
