R. I. C. Sandia Peak is, quite logically, the high spot of the Sandia Mountains which provide a beautiful backdrop to every residence of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The peak rises to a height of 10,300 feelt which is some 5350 feet above the Rio Grande Valley and Albuquerque. The unique beauty of the mountains is partly due to the way they were formed. Some 300 million years ago a geological fault caused one edge of what is now the Sandia Mountains to rise above the valley floor —much the same as a warped floorboard might rise on one edge. The result was a long gentle slope on the east side of the mountains, and rugged granite and limestone boulders and cliffs on the west. This west side is the one that faces Albuquerque, but its tremendous rugged conformity cannot be appreciated until you travel over it by way of the tramway that lifts you from the base of Sandia to the crest. The tramway itself is a modern miracle, and is the longest in the United States. Its two 60-passen-ger cars travel a distance of 2.7 miles from one terminal to the other. Swiss engineers came to America to do the job which was completed just a year ago this month. The most impressive part Os the trip up the mountain is from tower 2 to the summit, a distance of 7700 feelt high above deep canyons and brushing next to rocky granite spires. The mountain covers four of the world’s seven ‘‘life zones” of plants and animals. While making the tramway trip, sharp looking will give you glimpses of Bighorn Sheep, mule deer, cougar, bobcats,' black bears, lynx and antelope. There is a lone family of Golden Eagles which can be seen on occasion. Forty-six species of birds are to be found in the area. The silent awesome trip on the tramway' seems to transcend contemporary civilization and you could be looking down on the Carth as it appeared tens of thousands of years ago. The sudden appearance of a caveman might not be too stailtliing. Actually, the prehistoric Sandia Man left much of his life story in Sandia Cave on the north end of the mountain. This whole area is under intensive research by archeologists who are prying into the personal habits of Folsom Man and his kinfolk. From your dreamworld of aeons past, you need only to glance to the so uth and west to see - Albuquerque spread out in the valley. Long extinct volcanoes dot the landscape beyond the city. The whole scene is a bit incongruous in its contrast. At the top of the trip, your reverie is popped by the appearance of a modem, comfortable restaurant. It can be reached by road up the gentler eastern slope if your tendency to vertigo precludes your making the tram trip. By all means, visit Sandia Peak sometime.

meeting at the Parsonage. Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., mid-week prayer service at the church. A baptismal service will be held Sunday, June 4, at the United Missionary Church at New Paris, at 3:00 p.m. NOT TOO LATE FOR TOMATO PLANTS Tomato plants can still be set out now, and if potted tomato plants are used, you’ll be that much farther ahead. Purdue University extension horticulturists say tomatoes planted now will provide fruit by August. A potted plant, of course, means that the tomato's root system is already developed before it is set out. Be sure to select a wilt resistant variety, and it is possible to get newer varieties which are resistant to cracking.

When you set out the plants, dig a small hole four or five inches deep, fill it with water and tamp soil lightly around the plant. An application of 12-12-12 analysis fertilizer will help get the plants started. It’s best to apply this before you plant, at the rate of about an ounce for every four square feet. Set the plant's so each one has about 9ix to eight square feet to expand. UNCLE EB from EBENEZER Says: Dear Mister Editor: Zeke Grubb’s preacher come by the country store Saturday night and him and some of the fellers got to discussing the moon. Ordinary, said the Good Parson, he confined his discussing to Heaven but from all the money we was spending on the moon project, he figgered it was higher than Heaven and he better git in the mainstream of discussing higher things. He was of the opinion we was being took by them Russians in this race fer the moon. He said he was reading where some scince feller claimed the Russians, after gifting a good look at their moon pictures and ours, has decided they wasn’t nothing up there worth nothing and they was making like they was aiming fer the moon tout was actual give up on it and was spending their billions on other things. Ed Doolittle was agreed with Zeke’s preacher, allowed as how President Johnson would git a heap of praise from the people if he’d just fergit about the moon and put them billions on our public debt. Clem Webster of the Great Society, that thinks we gather Federal tax money in April from trees like farmers gathers their crops from the soil, said the moon was in our program fer progress and he was in favor of gitting up there come tornados and high water. Ed come back at Clem, allowed 'as how guns, butter, and the moon was more than we could handle.

He figgered a good place to start was between Cape Kennedy and the moon.
