UNCLE EB from EBENEZER Says: t Dear Mister Editor: As I have took note onct or twict before in this little piece, farmers and ranchers has to git their Federal income tax report ift by February 15, two month afore you city folks do your putting and taking fer the Great White Father in Washington. Bug Hookum has always claimed this was on account of the hen scratching they git from us rural folks won’t work in them Guvernment comuters and they has to check the forms by hand. I recollect 25 years ago when a farmer could keep a few figgers wrote down on. the hen house door and come up with a pritty honest report. But these days a farmer has to use what they call Schedule F and it would take a college perfessor to understand what they was talking about, much less fill in the answers. Fer instant, the one I’m working on now iays “Farm income is subject to the Social Security self-employment tax. See page 2 of Schedule F-l Form 1040. If you have filled Form 4029, application on exemption from tax on self-employment income, claim of refund, and waiver of benefits, do not file Schedule F-l and write Exempt to the left of the entry space on the self-employment tax line and carry to page 1, Form 1040. A feller, Mister Editor, that has spent most of his life talking mule got no idea what this is all about. The fellers at the country store Saturday night was holding their annual session on this national disaster and was reporting on how they was gitting along with the situation. Zeke Grub told the fellers he tried to make a deal with his preacher that if the good Parson would fill in Schedule F fer him he would fill in fer the preacher a couple Sundays in the pulpit. He reported the Parson turned him down cold, claimed he could solve the mysteries of the Bible and life in the hereafter but ho couldn’t git the hang of Schedule F. Farthermor#, he allowed, a couple sermons by Zeke and the collection plate would start coming back empty. Ed Doolittle reported the first time he worked out his report the Guvernment owed hiih $42.28 and the second time, when he subtracted line 7 from line 3 and entered it on page 2, Part 11, line 8 like they said, he owed the Guverment $86.10. He said he aimed to split the difference and git his check, in the mail and if they didn’t like it he would just crate up that Jersey heffer he’s got and ship her collect to the LBJ ranch. I figger, Mister Editor, Ed made a mistake working it twict. Now he’ll never know fer shore if he was short or long. He’s like a feller carrying two watches, he ain’t shore which one is right, so he never knows the correct time. Yours truly, Uncle Eb
