Bulldogs Whip Squires 19 -12 In NLC Opener
I The Nappanee Bulldogs fought hard Friday night to gain a If) to 12 victory in their first Northern j Lakes Conference game of the | season. Their victims were the ! well-regarded Manchester Sqitires 1 who. with Plymouth, have been | pre-season favorites in the NLC. | Manchester drew first blood in i the game with fullback Bashore i going over from the one yard line after Nappanee had held them for three downs inside their five. The . conversion attempt was no good, and the Squires led 6 to 0. Coach Bill Svyantek's gang bounced right back and scored on a 9-yard pass play from Lewie Swihart to Kent Stump. Lynn Crov's carry for the PAT was sucI cessful, and the Bulldogs were in a lead they were not to relin- | quish.

picture pass to Steve Walters that was good for ten yards and six points. The conversion attempt was no good, and the Bulldogs led 13 to 6.
Manchester whipped up the only score of the third quarter on a 10-yard pass play from Carter to Gratz. Their extra point attempt failed.
Os more academic interest was a fourth down measurement in the third quarter that left both the amateurs and the experts confused. The officials called for the chain gang after a Bulldog fourth down attempt. Measurement completed, the official signalled a first down. The chain gang went back to the sideline and everything looked normal. Not so. Someone talked the officials into taking another crack at the measuring bit which they dutifully did after scrootching the ball back a

bit. By this time, conditions were altered sufficiently that the Bull dogs lost out on the deal and the ball was awarded to the opposition. Regardless of legitimacy, reasons, etc., adequate explanation was not made, so the incident goes into the book under th classification of What Happened? Steve Walters got the third and clinching touchdown on a three yard run with only 10 seconds left in the last quarter.
Again, the conversion attemp was no good, and the final score was Nappanee 18, Manchester 12 Steve’s three yards on Nappanee’s last play brought his rush ing total Ao 144 yards for the game. With last week’s injury out of the way, Lewie Swihart led the team as quarterback for about 80 per cent of the play. Denny Arnott showed constant improvement in taking care of the other 20 per cent. Randy Croy did his bit for the evening with some fine and timely blocking. The whole line played the kind of game that keeps the coaches smiling. This week, the Bulldogs play host to Warsaw’s Tigers. Turnabout: B Team 12, Squire B's 19
The Northern Lakes Conference football schedule structure is set up to accommodate a "B" Squad game on Saturday between the two schools that played a varsitygame on Friday night. The Saturday game is played on the alternate field.
That’s a nice tidy set up. but the Bulldog Bees took it too much to heart and even came up with an identical score to the Nap
panee-Manchester varsity game. Only trouble for the Bees was that the host school was the loser in both cases.
Virtually everyone on Coach Dave Geyer’s Bulldog B squad got into the fray with the Manchester Bees. Nappanee had some long passes, two of which went for scores, and the squad turned in a good game though losing 19 to 12.
One of the passes was a 50yarder from Freshman quarterback Mark Newcomer to John Sheets good for the first TD. The second covered 40 yards from Mark to Tim Wegmiller.
The team will travel to Warsaw this Saturday to keep that schedule structure-intact.
