Don Scheer, Purdue University extension horticulturist, says most of the problems are due to hot dry weather, and there’s not muety that can be done about them. Curling of tomato leaves is the most often reported problem. The leaves in these cases just curl into something resembling a tube. This is more common in some varieties, and especially with staked plants. Extra watering. Scheer says, can help some, but the plant will continue to produce good fruit in spite of the difficulty. Another problem is the dropping of blossom* before they set fruit. This is simply a hot weather problem, and happens because pollination doesn’t occur during extremely hot weather. Blossom lend rot, a dark, dry spot on the bottom of the fruit, is caused because the plant pulls water from the fruit just as it is developing.. Th? fruit cells, then, don’t develop properly.
