NHS Athletes Honored At Spring Sports Banquet Nappanee High School’s’ Spring Sports Banquet was held last Monday Evening in the high school allpurpose room with a capacity crowd of families and fans of the athletes. The participants of four sports are annually honored at this banquet. Three of these sports, basketball, tennis and track have completed their schedules while the fourth, golf, will be completed this week. Master of ceremonies was Joe Jones. Principal James Weddle presented a trophy to Senior Cheerleader Margaret Hargrove and commended the cheerleaders for their contributory efforts. Basketball coach Keith Dougherty presented the Most Valuable Player award to two players this year. Mel Dean and Kent Stump. Mel is a senior and Kent is a junior. Tom Greene was elected Honorary Captain of the basketball team. Mel Dean was also recipient of the Free Throw' award having had a free throw percentage of .765 for the season. Lettermen seniors honored at the banquet were Don Berger, Dave Callander, Mel Dean. Ted Frick and Tom Greene. The tennis team had a conference record of three wins and two losses for third place in the NLC. Senior letterman John Yarian along with seniors Lanny Anglin' and Brian McDonald were recognized by Coach Philip Lehman for their court efforts. Senior Jim Deardorff received both awards for his outstanding record in track, the Most Valuable Player award and the Honorary Captain award. He also accumulated the greatest point total for his team during the year. Both Jim Deardorff and Tom Greene have qualified for the Kegional track meet by virture of their effort at the Sectional meet last week. The 880 relay team with Tom, Jim, Larry Newcomer and Steve Walters will compete at the Regional as well. The Kegional meet with be held at Ft. Wayne on Saturday, May 21. Senior lettermen recognized by Coach Don McKee were Dave Callander, Jim Deardorff, Tom Evans, Ted Frick, Tom Greene and Dave Ingle. The newest addition to the high school sports program, golf, was recognized by Keith Dougherty in the unavoidable absence of golf Coach Fred Squires. As mentioned earlier in this report, the golf season has one more week of play. Senior lettermen Bob Callander is currently leading the team for the honor of / the putting trophy awarded for taking the least number of putts. The banquet speaker this year was Elkhart High School track Coach, Matt Ronzone. In his* talk, he paid tribute to the fine athletes of the past in Nappanee’s athletic history. Love of the game is still the most important attribute in an athlete, said Coach Ronzone. He admonished overzealous parents, other relatives and friends of high school athletes who expect and demand accomplishment beyond capability. Coach Ronzone concluded his talk with remarks about athletic records, particularly in track, and how these records continue to be bettered.

Nappanee Gets 3rd In Track Sectional Friday In the Sectional track meet at Elkhart. Nappanee showed a great deal of strength and finished third behind Elkhart and Goshen, They accumulated 19 points to put them ahead of Kendallville, Bremen, Warsaw and a host of other schools. Jim Deardorff won the high hurdles in 15.5 and then went on tc win the low hurdles in 21.4. Tom Greene placed third in the low hurdles and fourth in the high hurdles. The team of Steve Walters, Larry Newcomer, Tom Greene and Jim Deardorff finished second to Elkhart in the 880 relay. In points it was Elkhart 75, Goshen 27, Nappanee 19, Kendallville 10, Bremen 9, Warsaw, Wolf Lake and Jimtown 8, Concord, Albion, Lakeland, Leesburg, Triton 2. and Jefferson and Plymouth 1. The rest didn’t score.
