The 1965 Bulldogs Provide Fans With Good Basketball This year’s Nappanee basketball sgvad never had any pretensions. Njbody, with the possible exception of Coach Dougherty, could predict what kind of a team this was gc ing to be. It proved to be an interesting one. On several occasions it went into a game as underdogs. They gave fans a season of contests. There was the almost, but net quite, of Elkhart early in the y:ar. Then there was the frustration of Rochester, and the inability to overcome the bigness of Warsaw. There was the last minute disappointment of Columbia City. There was the game with Goshen, which everyone likes to forget

about. But then there w'as the thrill of John Adams and the unforgettable Clay game. There was the magnificent game against Manchester and the defeat of Penh during the season. It was a team of personalities. Mel Dean gained poise and finesse and became the man whom rivals had to watch closely. He could sink them from a variety of places with apparent ease. When he was good, he was mighty good. Steve (Culp, lacking height, had scrap which had also stood him in good stead during the football season. He has his definite assignments and usually carried them out. Tom Greend started gaining needed confidence midway in the season,. His mistakes always seemed to be. more apparent because he’d point th'em out himself, but he was a valuable member of this team. Jim Zentz, the tallest member, added authority to the Bull-

dogs performance on the back- , boards. A great deal of the team action seemed to center about him. They called Dave Callander “Cow.” A great performer on the football field, he was another key matt on the basketball squad. People will remember him for his winning basket in the closing seconds, but they were often unaware of the many routine tasks he performed well throughout the year. Larry Heckaman had neither a basketball build nor the confidence I he showed on the football field, but he was that important sixth man who was there when he was needed. And Mel Witt came through in several important games. i But the real key to all this was a true builder of men. None of the boys will tell you what Coach says during the time outs or in such half time situations as the dismal Gcshen game. But there is no doubt of the great respect; they have for this truly Christian gentleman. Keith Dougherty is at the same time a master strategist and a top notch student of psychology. It was evident that, whatever successes this 1965 team had, they were doing their* best for their coach. Bulldogs Swamp Bristol Saturday One thing which Coach Dougherty doesn’t believe in is “pouring it on” when his team meets one not its equal. But it couldn’t be helped Saturday when Nappanee met Bristol in the Sectional. The Bulldog substitutes played the fourth quarter and made 30 points. They stopped short Qf 100, making it 98 to 36. In the game, Mel Witt made 10 points, Don Berger 8, Lou Swihart and Kent Stump 6. Mel Dean had a particularly fine afternoon as did Tom Greene. The Nappanee squad made 39 out of 72 shots. On Saturday, Penn did just about the same to Jimtown, and Elkhart had little trouble with New Paris after the first quarter. The exciting" game on Saturday was the bruising encounter between Concord and Middlcbury in which the Middies, down 21 to 12 at the first quarter, and trailing by one at the end of the third, won 74 to 68. Penn Beats Nap In Semi-Finals - Sectional ended for Nappanee Monday afternoon, when Penn avenged an earlier defeat, 67 to 61. If the Bulldogs had been able to hit a higher percentage of the shots they took in the first quarter, they would have surged to an early lead. Instead they trailed by five or six points most of the game. With only 2:05 left in the game, a basket by Jim Zentz brought the score up to within one of the Kingsmen, and with a minute left, the Bulldogs trailed 62 to 61. But the final seconds ticked away with Nappanee again unable to go ahead. Phil Allen of Penn was the outstanding star of the game. He made 35 points. For Nappanee, Jim Zentz made 18, Tom Greene 14, and Dave Callander 12. Mel Dean, closely guarded, accounted for only 11. Steve Culp made six. Elkhart pulled away in the third quarter, leading 55 to 47 going into the final period and winning 77 to 62 to meet Penn in the finals. Weddle Wins Two Events In ThreeWay Track Meet In a triangular track meet between Indiana University, Wisconsin, and Michigan State recently, Randy Weddle won both the 60 and the 300 yard dash to aid Indiana in getting second place in the meet. In the 60, he beat State’s Jim Summers who had beaten him the week before at the Michigan State Relays. In the meet, Wisconsin had 77 points, Indiana 51%, and Michigan State 42%.
