It’s almost impbssjbie to believe, but the cost of state government lias increased 100 percent- in the, last 10 years. In 1955-57. the state budget .totaled about S72fl million. At the present rate of state spending. $250 million would operate the state for less than four months. In 1941, $29.88 was spent by the state lor each? citizen.. In 1964. this per capita expenditure had risen to $146.66 - an increase of 391 per cent or 7.5 per cent a year.

Where is all this money spent? A major portion of it goes for educating our youngsters. Os the proposed $1.7 billion budget. 36.8 per cent, or $636 million, is slated for education. Local schools would get s4ll million and the state colleges and universities $225 million, It's the general fund portion of the $1,7 billion budget which causes the most concert in fiscal planning. $943 million and this money comes trom the sales tax and the state income taxes. The remaining S7BB million in the $1.7 billion budget are known a b dedicated funds, most of which comes from motor fuel revenues and are used for highway purposes. Education cats up 60 per cent of the- $943 million in the general fund portion of the budget. So \ou can see the cost of educating our youngsters poses the biggest money problems for the Legis-
lature. In this short explanation about the budget, we have attempted to cover major highlights of state spending. < The newspapers will be filled with -stories about the budget from now until the session ends. This week’s reteipes all use Cheddar cheese. TUNA-RICB-CHEESE CASSEROLE 2 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoon flour 2 cups milk Vsr teaspoon salt
’/a teapoon paprika 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded 2 cups rice, cooked 1 7 oz. can tuna fish V 4 cup bread crumbs, buttered Make white sauce with butter, flour and milk. Add salt, paprika, and cheese. In a buttered casserole (2 qt.) arrange layers of rice, tuna fish and sauce. Cover top With crumbs. Bake in a moderate oven (350 - 375) for 30 minutes. Serves 8-10.
