.LETTERS November 2, 1964 Mr. Don Nichols, Editor Nappanee Advance-News Nappanee, Indiana Dear Don: May I use this column to express my appreciation and gratitude to the youngsters and teenagers of our community for the way they celebrated Halloween? In reports I have received from the Nappanee Police Department and other city agencies the only things done in Nappanee were one small sign displaced and a few pumpkins thrown in the street. I was concerned this year because of the decision that there would be no Halloween Festival at Central School as there had been in the past. My fears were premature as there were very few “Trick or Treaters”, very little soaping of windows and almost no “horn sticking”. When we read of the vandalism that took place jn some of the surrounding cities and towns, we should be proud of our youth.

It reflects on their home life, church affiliation and their schooling. All too often we tend to criticize our youth so when they earn compliments they should be told and complimented publicly. We did miss the little “Trick or Treaters” though! Thanks Kids, I’m sure the whole city appreciated it! Sincerely, Mayor Robert P. Sinclair t VETERANS DAY There will be an 11:00 a.m. memorial service on Veterans Day, November 11, at Memorial Field. All patriotic organizations are invited to meet at the American Legion Home at 10:30 a.m. and march to the Field. This includes the American Legion, V.F.W. and their .auxiliaries, the War Mothers, the Relief Corps, the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and Girl Scouts. Experience pays, except where a feller has had so much, that he can’t be taught anything.

I TALK 0F 1 | THE TOWN I 1 BY BETTY JOHNSON 1 I 773-3385 Central school kindergarten mothers attended a “get acquainted” tea last Thursday afternoon in the gaily decorated kindergarten room which was bright with Halloween decorations created by the small fry! Carrying out the Halloween theme, the serving table was decorated with a variegated fall centerpiece of colorful gourds, wheat, bittersweet, etc. and refreshments of donuts and cider were served from a jack o’ lantern punch bowl and pumpkin holders. About 45 mothers attended the party, enjoyed a social hour of visiteach other, and listened to a welcome talk by teacher, Mrs. Ruth Stoops, who also answered questions and discussed kindergarten aims and projects planned for the little ones.

I The Warren Howensteigg have l recently enjoyed a visit from their son, Noel, who traveled here via airplane from Florida for a busy three day visit with his parents and sister, Sally, and her family. Noel did not get to see as many local usual during this trip as much of his time was spent in Elkhart where he visited with his father who was recuperating from recent surgery at Elkhart General Hospital. Former Nappanee residents, the Noel Howensteins and their two children, 13 year old Brett and Brenda who is 11, now live in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where they operate the Baldwin Piano and Organ Cos. During one of the recent hurricanes in that area, the shop front and some equipment sustained moderate damage but such is the hazard of operating a business on that sometimes storm tossed coast! Noel did enjoy our Hoosier fall weather during his visit as he was lucky enough to be here during one of the rare weekends we have experienced lately! Mrs. Bernice Byers week-ended in Lafayette with her son, George, and family. While there she at-

Mrs. George Byers plays first chair in the second violin section of the orchestra and the group she plays with presents four performances a year for the public." Lamar Metzler and son, Steve, drove his mother, Mrs. Floyd Metzler, to Ypsilanti, Mich., Sunday. Mrs. Metzler has a brother in the hospital there and she visited with him for a while. House guests in hte Lowell Mullett home this week are Mrs. Andy Bakle and Mrs. F. M. Renollet of Cecil, Ohio., Mrs. Mullett drove to Ohio Tuesday and brought her mother and aunt back with her for a visit. Eight spooks and goblins gathered at the Russel Bolyard home on Halloween evening for a lively party. Host Tom Bolyard welcomed his costumed friends who were a bit hard to recognize when they arrived in various disguises! The mystery guests turned out to be Bruce Zimmerman, Karl Kindig, Steve Stillson, Brian Hoffer, Steve Hershberger, Joe McDonald, and Bill Kurtz who joined Tommy for an evening of fun which included a scavenger hunt around the neighborhood, various games, and of course plenty of refreshments for the hungry Halloweeners! Not to be out-done in the party line, another Halloween celebration was co-hostessed by two girls, Sue McKee and Nancy Maust, at the Don McKee home Saturday evening. The girls did their own decorating and just for variety called theirs a “witch party”. 12 girls costumed as witches or monster char-
