Mothers breathed a collective sigh of relief and teachers, armed with an assortment of tranquilizers, braced themselves for any emergency, as school doors swung open on Monday morning. N.H.S. has taken on anew (?) look this term and it is difficult to believe it is the same school. With a record enrollment of 659 students, the building is practically bursting at the seams! The new study hall, part of last years building program, no longer exists. It has been divided into two classrooms. In the main corridor a temporary study hall has been set up, again taking away the student lounge. The reason forall of this is the invasion of N.H.S. by the entire eighth grade population of Union Center. To the upperclassmen (!) this seems like an awful lot of little kids running around in their sacred halls! (No offense kids!) Everything will fall into place eventually and NHS will
once again move at a natural and familiar pace. As the final bell rang on Monday the juniors were out the doo“iike a flash! It wasn’t because they were tired of school already, but! they wanted to get up to Newcomer sand pick up their class rings. This/ year’s- rings have the Bulldog emf blem in the center with the initials and the year of graduation on either side. Some of the rings have white sapphire corner stones on a blue sapphire background while the plain design has a white gold background. Tuesday was an exciting day for the seniors who received the proofs for their senior pictures. These pictures were taken August 11 and 12. when everyone donned their Sunday best and posed for “Jorge.” While there were a few people who didn't find their proofs too flattering, most everyone agreed that “Jorge” did his usual great job. Orders will be placed sometime this week and the seniors are looking forward to receiving their pictures before Christmas. Last Tuesday evening the mighty Bulldogs opened their season by

Friday night the Dogs journeyed to Columbia City to face the Eagles. The game was a thriller all the way from beginning to end. The score was tied 12-12 up until the last seconds of the game when Jay Miller save the day (nite) by kicking a field goal and thus winning the game, 15-12. This Friday is the first home game of the season. Nappanee will be playing host to the Kendallville Comets. Let’s all get out and back the boys 100%. Thursdsay afternoon NHS students were treated to a half day vacation while the teachers attended a math workshop at the high school. Monday students and teachers alike enjoyed the holiday, but Tuesday it was back to the old grind. Now it’s really time to buckle down and get busy! The various clubs will soon be getting organized and class officers will be elected, so I’ll be back with all the latest happenings at NHS. A modern jet passlmger plane uses some 20,000 to 21,000 gallons of fuel on one trans-Atlantic crossing, to' power a $612 million plane some 3,500 miles in about 6 hours which is quite a contrast to Lindbergh’s 32 hours, 450 gallons, and a $13,000 plane.

Phil Hahn Wins Dairy Judging At State Fair The Roger Hahn family had a good week at the State Fair. Holly Hahn had a Holstein calf which got second place in a group of about 30 calves. Then Phil Hahn was on the team which won first place for dairy judging. This team will go to Waterloo, lowa in September to take part in national dairy judging competition. They were honored Saturday at an awards banquet at Butler University. On their way to lowa they will compete in various judging contests. The National winning team will go to England. Another trouble with getting a college education is that you may have to work for somebody who doesn’t.

We Are Guided Solely by the Wishes of Those We Serve THERE ARE many “experts” in this country today who seem to know exactly what people want, do not want, should have or shbuld not have. Not being so well tutored in the intricacies of human behavior we have only one method of. discovering what people want—and that’s by asking them. We do not presume to know more about the needs and wants of the people of this community than they do themselves. WRIGHT FiinarfiS Maimo ? Office 7734173 • Roe. 7734175 fcOR B. Walnut St Nappanee
