PORTE NEWS
Bob Miteholl Nappanee 20 Rochester 12 The NHS Bulldogs extended their victory string to four straight games last Friday night. Trailing 12 - 7 at halftime, the Bulldogs rallied for two second-half TD’s to defeat Rochester 20 - 12. The vaunted Zebra passing attack with qb. Steve Coplen throwing clicked on 7 of 10 pass attempts in the first half. Nap’s pass defense permitted only 7 of 18 attempts to be completed in the second half however. Nap returned the opening kickoff to their own 44. On third down Dick Wilson intercepted Culp’s pass on his own 40 and ran to the Bulldogs 9 before being tackled, but a 15 yard clipping penalty set the Zebra’s back on the 29. It took the Zebras seven plays to score. Coplen hit on 3 of 3 pass attempts, and the last one to end Gordon Bathrick covered 12 yards and the Zebra’s first TD. Fullback Ron Shearer’s run for the extra point was no good and Rochester led 6 - 0. The Bulldog’s Jackie Hamman returned the kick-off to his own 43, and it took the Bulldogs 17 plays to cover 57 yards. A third down Culp to Jerry Weldy pass was a key play in the drive and gave the Bulldogs a first down on the Rochester 20. On the second play of the second
quarter, halfback Jim Andrews finally drove over from one yard out for the TD, and Jay Miller kicked the extra point to put Nap out in front 7 - 6. An exchange of punts set the Zebras back deep in their own territory. Starting from their own 15 they marched 85 yards in 21 plays to score. On the drive, Coplen hit 4 of 7 attempts for 39 yards, mixed his plays well, and then culminated the drive with a 5 yard sneak right over center to score. Shearer’s attempted run was no good and the Zebra’s led 12 - 7. With 36 seconds left in the first half, Dick Geyer returned the kickoff to his own 49. A screen pass to Andrews covered 18 yards to the Rochester 33, but Culp failed to connect on two pass attempts as the first half ended. In the third period, the Bulldogs moved 45 yards hi 8 plays to take over the lead when a poor Zebra punt rolled dead on their own 4S. After Andrews picked up 2, a clipping penalty set the Bulldogs back to their own 42, but Geyer nicked this up with a 16 yard pickup to Rochester’s 42, On third down eight to go for a first down, Culp hit soph, end Dave Callander who rambled to the 8 before he was bumped out-of-bounds. Andrews picked up 5, and then crashed over from the 3 for the TD. Miller failed to kick the extra point and the Bulldogs led 13 - 12. Rochester drove to Nap’s 29 midway in the fourth quarter, but Culp intercepted a Coplen pass to stymie the drive. Later, Andreews picked off a Coplen aerial on the Rochester 40 and behind a fine block from guard Dave McGrew raced to the 11. On the first play, Geyer ran wide around his left end to score the clincher, and Miller added the extra point to make it 20 -12. The Zebra’s had another opport unity to score in the final minute of play when they recovered a Bulldog fumble on Nap’s 39. Two passes gave them first down on the 19. Coplen picked up four on the ground, then he tried three aerials but the last one was knocked down in the end zone as the game ended. The stout Zebra defense held the Bulldogs to only 128 yards rushing in 37 carries. Nap completed 3 of 10 passes for 63 yards. Rochester gained 79 yards in 33 carries, but picked up 42 of those yards on their big 85 yard march in the second period.

JR. HIGH FOOTBALL The Junior High School football team let Warsaw get off to a 13 to 0 lead Tuesday and then came back to beat them 14 to 13. The Nappanee team played greatly improved football both, offensively and defensively. The winning touchdown was a pass play from Steve Walters to Steve Adams, Bruce Deardorff kicked the extra point to chalk up a win for Nappanee. All the seventh graders for both teams played in the 3rd quarter. Last Thursday, Nappanee lost to Bremen 19 to 6. The score was 6 to 6, Nappanee was forced to punt deep in their own territory. A bad pass from center gave Bremen the ball and their second touchdown.
