Bob Mitchell Nappanee 14 Warsaw 7 following three successive defeats, the Bulldogs simply refused to accept the underdog role any longer, and it was a fine team effort that enabled Nap to upset a touted Warsaw eleven 14-7 last Friday for their first victory of the season. This was the 12th meeting between the two teams, and Nap has now won 7, lost 4, and they tied once. Before the game, Coach Gundernan said the Tigers would be the best ball club his team would face this year, but he also stated that his boys learned a great deal from the fine second fyalf they played against New Carlisle the week before, and it was quite evident that the Bulldogs really went to Warsaw to play football. In halfbacks Dale Evans and Perrv- Webb, the Tigers had the highest scoring duo in Northern Indiana and rolled up 400 yards rushing while defeating Hartford City 38-0 the week before. But the stout Bulldog defense refused to buckle and they stopped two Warsaw drives once in the first period when Denny Templeion recovered a Tiger fumble on his own 14, and again in the fourth period when Dick Geyer came through with a defensive gem that put a halt to a Warsaw drive on Naps 2 yard line.
Nap took the opening kick-off and immediately marched 72 yards in ill plays for their first TD. On the first play, flanker Jerry Welriy made a nice catch of QB Steve Culps pass good for 14 yards, and then Jim Andrews ran 19 to the Warsaw 39. The Bulldogs mo\;ed to the 5 yard, line, and after Geyer picked up onq, Andrews found a hole at Dave MqGrew's right guard spot and drove into the end zone for the TD; Jay Miller kicked the extra pojnt to make it 7-0. War Saw returned tackle Jerry Clipp's kick-off to their own 35 and then marched to Naps 15, but Templeton made his timely recovery of Webb's fumble on the 14. Andrews picked up 11 and a first down on the 25 to ignite a 86 yard

drive for the Bulldog’s second TD. Quarterback Steve Culp kept the march alive on two occasions when he went back to pass on third down but found his receivers covered and had to run with the ball. He picked up i& and 14 yards each time. At the start of the second per iod Nap was on Warsaw’s 15. Three carries by Andrews gave Nap first down on the 3. After Geyer moved it to the one, Culp swept his owr. left end on a keeper for the six points. Miller again kicked the important extra point to give Nap a 14-0 lead. Warsaw came right back on a 43 yard pass from QB Tom Sanders to right end Mike Chambers that put the ball on Naps 17. Fullback Sam Davis, a 204 pounder, picked up a first down on the 7, but Naps defense tightened and on 4th and 9, Sanders pass was picked off by Nap’s McGrew in the end zone and the ball was brought out to the 20, Nap moved to Warsaw’s 29, bui Warsaw eventually took over at that point as the first half ended with the Bulldogs leading 14-0. The Tigers took the second half kick-off and marched 71 yards in 16 plays for their only TD, with Webb going over from two. yards out and then successfully ran the extra point that maae it 14-7. Tito third period ended with the Bulldogs in possession on Warsaw’s 28, but on the first play of the fourth period, Webb intercepted Culp’s pass and a 15 yard personal foul penalty on Nap on the play gave the Tigers a first down on Naps 43. Warsaw moved to Naps 1 yard line in 7 plays, and it appeared thay would score the tying TD, but on third down Geyer broke through to spill Evans for a 3 yard loss back, to the 4. The- Tigers had one more chance, but Geyer and Larry Heckaman stopped Webb two yards short of the goal where Nap took o\?er and eventually punted out of danger. Warsaw reached Nap’s 25 late in the period, but on third down Sanders went back to pass and Ed Pin penger came barreling in from his left end position and threw Sanderc for a 15 yard loss back to the 40. Nap took over at that point with 2:57 left and with soph Ted Frick at quarterback they stayed on the ground as the seconds ticked away. With 1:26 left Pippen got off another fine punt under pressure and Warsaw made a last desperate attempt to score from their own 18, but Pippen intercepted a long

pass on his own 45 and that was the ball game. Nap gained 184 yards rushing in 42 carries, and completed 6 of 9 aerials for 48 yards for a net of 232 yards. Warsaw gained 176 yards rushing and completed 1 of 6 passes for 43 yards for a net of 219 yards. Individually, Andrews gamed 78 yards in 17 carries and caught 3 passes for 20 more. Geyer picked up 53 yards in 12 carries. Culp reeled off runs of 19, 14. and 15 yards but was thrown for a loss on two occasions anu wound up with a net gain of 40 yards. Soph halfback Tom Evans had runs of 9 and 4 yards and caught one pass for 14 yards. Evans was Warsaw's leading bailcarrier tis he picked up 76 yards in 17 CaMMM. Defensively for the Bulldogs, it was just an extremely fine team effort with McGrew, and tackles Clipp and Ralph Moore, and occasionally end' Larry Heckaman, were probably outstanding up front. The Bulldogs seem to be improving with each game, and Friday night they meet Coach Bunge’s Bremen Lions on Memorial Field.
