Nichols, Jr. 3rd Graders To Go To Circus r The third graders from Central and South schools and from Wakarusa are eagerly anticipating their trip on Friday. They will leave by bus about 10:30 to go to the Shrine' Circus in Fort Wayne. Equipped with their own sack lunches which they will eat before they get to Fort Wayne, they will be taken to Warsaw where they will join a large caral an of buses to be escorted by police on their trip. The JayceeS. who sponsor this event, will pro-, vide milk and lunches donated by Nappanee merchants for them on their return trip. They are expected to be back in Nappanee between seven and 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. POLKA DOTTED BLUEBIRDS At their last two meetings in January the Polka Dotted Bluebirds have made blankets and hats for their Barbie dolls with the help of * their leader, Mrs. Ray Hopewell and her assistant, Mrs. Brent Gall. On Wednesday, February 6, the Bluebirds visited the Nappanee Greenhouse where Mrs. Gall took them on a tour.

John Coppes Favors 2% Sales Tax State Representative John Coppes, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said last week that he favors a 2% sales tax as the means to raise the additionoal necessary funds in Indiana. Quoted in the South Bend Tribune, he said that this was his personal inclination and did not necessarily represent the feeling of his party. Mr. Coppes said that the two per cent sales tax would raise S2BO million during the next two years. The Republican leaders are preparing a five point tax program which includes a one-third hike in the gross income tax and a 2 per cent sales tax excluding food for home consumption and medicines. They would also change the present SI,OOO exemption for each

They would also ask for legislation to clamp a lid on local property taxes by sending about S2OO million of increased state revenues back to local communities with the provision that these funds be. used to lower local property taxes. John Coppes, Monday introduced a local surtax measure which would authorize cities, towns, and counties to levy a local surtax of % of one per cent on the state gross tax. Much of the action in the General Assembly last week centered around the re-apportionment bill. The Republican backed plan passed the House last Friday. Voting in favor of the plan were 54 Republicans and two Democrats, while one Republican voted against it along with 41 demo crats. This plan was not expected to experience such easy sailing in the Senate, and a compromise plan was indicated. Monday, Sen.
