Bob Mitchell Nappanee 72-Kendallville 75 The first overtime game of the season proved to be disastrous for the Bulldogs as they came out on the short end of the score when Kendallville outscored Nap 25-12 in the quarter and in the three minute overtime period to walk off with a 75-72 decision. The game was a thriller from the beginning and was repetitious of the Columbia City game. The .Bulldogs led the Comets for 30 minutes but gradually saw the lead dwindle away in the final two minutes. This time they were fortunate to send the game into overtime but were held scoreless in the three minute period while the Comets were scoring three points. In the first period Nap jumped out in front 9-6. Jerry Lambert then hit three field goals and a free throw to give Nap a 10 point bulge, but the Comets 6-3 center John Gehring hit four straight field goals and the Bulldogs led by only 5 points 21-16 at the end of the period. Lambert and guard Tod Lehman hit three field goals apiece to help put Nap out in front by nine points at halftime, 41-32. The Bulldogs increased their lead in the third period and at one time held a 55-40 advantage. The Comets husky Ralph Hollar connected twice and Hedges once to trim Naps lead to 60-50 at the end of the third period. What seemed to be a comfortable 10 point lead going into the fatal fourth quarter gradually dissapated as the Comets Dan Diggins led a Kendallville rally that caught the Bulldogs at 66 all with 2:05 left. Lambert’s free throw made it 67-66, but two free throws by Diggins gave Kendallville the lead for the first time with only 1:23 remaining. Hollar hit a bucket, but Lambert connected twice from the charity stripe and once from the field to give Nap the lead 71-70. With only 15 seconds remaining Lamberts fifth foul kept the Comets alive and Matthews responded by calmly dropping in the two free throws to make it 72-71. The Bulldogs still had another chance when with 8 seconds to go Ron Kendall stepped to the charity line on a one and one situation. With the pressure on Ron hit the first one but missed the second attempt and the game was all knotted up 72-72 at the end of regulation time. In the three minute overtime period the Bulldogs were unable to score after losing Lambert, Berger and Lehman via the foul route. The Comets winning margin came on a field goal by Diggins and a free throw by Reihm
