Mental Hospital Help Shortage Is Growing By Frank A. White When The Hoosier Day Editor talked to the Pollyanna Club at Morristown, one of the husbands present asked why it is so hard to get ward attendants and help at our 11 state mental hospitals. The starting wage is $205 a month and meals at wholesale cost. There is no great difficulty at this time in getting help at the Madison, Muscatuck, Evansville and Richmond state hospitals at the moment. However, it is a different story at Beatty Memorial Hospital in northern Indiana, and some of the other hospitals. Beatty must maintain a maximum security ward for some 600 criminally insane patients. There are not enough Merit Board applications and the superintendent has to go into the open labor market and bid against steel mills and other higher paid employment. Result is, he gets the leftovers. There are other angles through out the state. For instance, it takes a degree of skill and training to be even a ward attendant. The new employes are on probation for a six months training period. The turnover is great. The turnover of employes last year was 30.6% of the total. The national standard calls for a minimum of 175 doctors to care for the more than 14,000 Indiana mental hospital population. We have only 72. And in addition we lost 18 doctors last year, who quit, died, went into private practice, or moved to other states and to higher paying jobs. MONOXIDE POISONING INCREASES WITH WINTER Every year, when winter comes, there is a rash of deaths from monoxide poisoning. Several have occured already over the state. A warning on this great killer has been voiced by Dr. A. C. Offutt, State Health Commissioner. He spoke words that could save your, or my life, or that of one of our loved ones. He

said: “Public Health Service Reports showed that in 1959, carbon monoxide from automobile exhausts killed 385 persons in the U. S. A. “Cold weather means closed windows in homes and cars, with automobiles, faulty gas burning appliances claiming victims. One of the dangerous aspects of carbon monoxide poisoning is that the symptoms do not immediately suggest the cause. Nausea and dizziness, accompanied by headache, should not be attributed to car motion and forgotten. Instead, auto windows should be opened and fresh air breathed for several minutes. Gas burning appliances in the home should be cheeked for defective: operation. Amol" fresh air should always be available in garages and autos, even on coldest days. If someone in your presence is attacked by such poison, move him immediately to fresh air, give artificial respiration. Mouth to mouth breathing should be used if the pat'" v >i has stooped breathing. While on this subject, clon’t forget that to burn old, discarded automobile batteries is as lethal as playing with a loaded machine gun. PLASTIC BAG DEATHS CONTINUE TO RISE A little boy in our town was smothered to death recently with a plastic film bag used in dry cleaning. The child reached and got the bag from an adjoining table, it closed his nostrils and he died. There were 114 such deaths in the U. S. A. in 1960. When you get clothes from a cleaner in a plastic film bag, don’t rest until it has been burned.
