Bob Mitchell Nappanee 57 Columbia City 63 Naps four game win streak was snapped by Columbia City last Friday. The fine Eagle quintet featured a pair of nifty guards in Mike Cook and Jim Sutherland and a well-balanced scoring attack to defeat the Bulldogs 63-57 in a thriller. The Bulldogs countered with a two man attack that nearly sprang ,an upset on the touted Eagles Center Bob Berger and forward Jerry Lambert accounted for 43 of Naps 57 points. Berger was high scorer for the game with 25 points and Lambert had 18. The two evenly matched teams battled for the lead in the first half. The. game was tied four times and the lead changed hands four times. Nap led at the end of the first period 16-14, and a long one hander by Tod Lehman deadlocked the game at 30-30 at intermission. . In the third period, the pulled out in front by seven points, 39-32. It was the widest margin either team held during the game. But Nap fought back and a three point play by Lambert cut the Eagles lead to 45-42 going into the final quarter. Tne stage was set tor a hectic eight minutes of basketball. A three point play by the Eagles -Mike Hey narrowed the lead to one point 50-49, and it became a fight to the finish. With two minutes left in the game Berger hit a field goal thai gave Nap a 56-53 lead, and it turned out to be the last twopointer Nap was able to score in the game. £ For thirty minutes the officials permitted no holds barred under the basket, but in the final two minutes they became whistle pyDuring, the first half, the Eagles failed to connect on five tries from the charity stripe and were evidently saving them for the crucial final two minutes. Trailing by three points with 1:52 left, Columbia City promptly in 8 straight free throws to go out in front 61-56. Meanwhile, Naps offense crum bled as three starters fouled out. Berger, Kendall, and Lambert left the game with five personals and Naps only point in the last two minutes came on a free throw by Mike Egolf. * Columbia City scored 18 points in the final period and 12 of those points came via the foul line as

the Eagles connected on 12 of 15 tries. Shooting percentages found the Bulldogs hitting 21 field goals in 57 tries for 37 percent. Columbia City hit 24 of 63 for 38 percent. Center Larry Harvey led the balanced Eagle attack with 15 points. Naps B Team dropped a 33-31 thriller to Columbia City after leading by 12 points at halftime. Friday night, the Bulldogs take a long journey to North Judson to meet coach Jim Roush’s Blue Jays. Last year Roush was coach at Middlebury. Milford Church Os God Heads Church League In the final games of the recreation department, sponsored Class A church basketball league, Monday evening, the Milford Church of God stands in first place with 10 wins and 0 losses; Nappanee Church of God second with 7 wins and 3 losses; First Brethren third with 6 wins and 4 losses, and Presbyterian fourth, 4 wins and 6 losses.

The double elimination tourneys, stqrt Monday evening, with the following teams in the Class A tourney; First Brethren, Nappanee Church of God, Presbyterian, Wakarusa Christian A and B teams, Milford Church of God, Wakarusa Methodist and St. John’s Lutheran.
