"But you can eat it." Two women were discussing the making of jellies. Each was con- . fident she had the best recipes. Said one “My grape jelly is so clear you can read a newspaper i through a glass of it.” The other | woman instead of being topped I simply and wisely replied “Well, | you probably could not read a ! paper through mine but you can ; eat it. The family loves my grape ! jelly.” | When you consider that the ! purpose of grape jelly is to be | eaten that response was pat, ‘right ! on the nose.’ Each person and each i thing to it’s purpose. ! No doubt many a monkey wrench | has been used to drive a nail home, j But, even so, that is not the pur- ■ pose of a wrench. It was made ! to turn a nut or a bolt into proper | position. A good knife can be used j to open a can of vegetables but I that is not the purpose for which j the knife is made. It was made to i cut a variety but a limited variety j of things. If the wrench gets the ! nut or bolt fastened, if the knife j does its proper cutting, each has S served its proper purpose. j You and I must not be disturbed S by the collateral talents we may j not have. We have each his own S job. Do that well, with skill, with | conscience and our responsibility S has been met. Our task has been ; done. ■ Once I knew a very fine man, f since deceased, who was in his S day an outstanding engineer. In ■ his speciality there was no better. S He had an interesting trick that ■ pleased many people. He could ■ walk on his hands. Lots of fun but ; so far as his work was concerned l it was entirely irrelevant and made : no contribution. You are a Mother in the home. ■ You do your work well. Your ! family is well cared for. Your ! children are clean and healthy. : The fact that you cannot play a • Mozart Minuet on one string means ! nothing. • You are a man, the head of a • family. You hold a responsible • position. You do your work well. . Your family is well supported. ■ You are respected in your com- ■ munity. It is entirely beside the ; point that you can neither ride I three horses at once or turn a 5 flip flop when ice skating. Many of us are embarrassed at : the real or feigned versatility of j some other people. Our lives seem • humdrum and common to us. But ; let us keep our mind on the main : issue. That is to do well the sim- • pie, direct duty that is our asS signment in life. ■ It makes for inner peace. 5 Remember our little woman. ■ “You may not be able to read S your daily paper through my jelly S BUT YOU CAN EAT IT.” S What wise words! Let us all 5 learn their lesson. Copyright 1961 | Louis W.
