MALTA FEVER A type of bacterial infection of animals which can be spread to man was discovered in 1887 by David Bruce, British army surgeon, and is known by a varieity of names including brucellosis In man the disease is known also as Malta Fever, sir.es ii was first recognized on the island of Malta. Undulant fever is another name for it because of the typical waves of remittent fever which characterizes it. Brucellosis is seen especially in cattle, goats, and swine, and spread to man through contact by people who work with infected animals, or through the use of. raw milk from infected cows and goats. Proper pasteurization of milk prevents the spread of the disease through infected milk. Prevention ol the disease a s spread by contact with animals depends on testing of animals and the education of workers with animals. This disease is classified in cattle as Bang’s Disease, and animals found on testing to have the disease must be slaughtered to prevent spread ot the infection. Those most likely to be subject to brucellosis from contact are people employed in occupations such as slaughterhouse employees, butchers. meat inspectors veterinarians and men working on farms Infection results more frequently from direct contact with infected animals than from drinking con taminated milk, and men have the disease about three times as frequently as women Ear y in the present century brucellosis was a serious problem on the island of Malta with a large number ot cases among the British soldiers located there It was found by Dr Bruce that much of the disease was caused by infected goat's milk and that pasteurizsition could make the milk safe.

Human* Society Seeks funds for new $ 70,000 Shelter Willard Combs, president of Elkhart County Humane Society, announces the appointment of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph S. Rasin as eochairmen of the building fund drive for anew animal shelter. Plans have been made for an extensive county-wide campaign to include all of areas the humane society serves. The new $70,000 shelter will be able to meet the expanded needs of the entire county. It will replace the present outmoded fa oil dies, located on bypass road 112. Since the shelter’s inception in 1948, services to the community have increased drastically. From a start of five animals, the society now handles an average of 9,500 animals annually, with a total board day count of over 63,000 days. These figures show an increase of 13% from the year 1958. A fully trained staff, under the guidance of Elmer Rose, executive director, and two ambulances are on duty 365 days a year to serve the needs of the entire county. In addition to the care of lost and stray animals, the society carries on a full time program of public education, talks and shows to school children of all ages, obedience training, rescue of abandoned animals, confinement of suspected rabid animals, investigation of reported animal cruelty cases, and control of animal licensing.
One more trouble with gal§ is that you can’t be REALLY sure which one is smart, and which is dumb, before it’s too late. Second childhood isn’t too bad, if you have a little money.
