Kindig Attorney for Estate Publish Nov 10, 17, 1960 BUILD BIRD-FEEDING STATIONS NOW FOR PLEASURE THIS WINTER Whether you live in the city or country, a project that will bring happiness and entertainment when snow comes is to build bird feeding stations in sight of your windows. You may use scraps of lumber, garbage can lids, or what is handy. Essential is a roof over the feeding spot so that snow and ice will not cover the grain. Birds are colorful and lively and are worth their weight in gold destroying weed seeds and harmful insects. Carl Lowden of Shelbyville says, “Those persons who do not know birds are missing an entire world of nature’s wonderful, pleasure. Somehow knowing our colorful and ever interesting birds, enables us to appreciate more fully, the wonderful worlds about us and makes us thrillmgly glad just to be alive and able to see and to hear and exercise our senses.”* Rain falling on north side of Triple Divide Peak, western Montana, winds up in Mackenzie River and Arctic Ocean; that falling on south side, in the Mississippi and Gulf; on the west side, in the Columbia and Pacific.

By Frank A. White The popular belief that Hoosier aqto drivers are wild and irresponsible behind a wheel is not true. A factual look at statistics of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee shows that most Hoosiers do a good job of driving. It is only the reckless minority that causes bloody slaughter on highways. In 1937, we had 1,367 persons killed on Indiana highways. But in that year, we had only 1,013,741 motor vehicles registered in Indiana. In 1959, the number of fatalities on Hoosier highways was held to 1,125 persons. Yet, the total number of registered motor vehicles on the highways of this state at the time, had climbed to 2,170,062. Along with this fabulous increase in motor vehicles on the highways of this state, we tacked up a fantastic 20 billion miles of travel. These figures are a testimony to Indiana drivers exercising care. Furthermore, Indiana brought its total traffic fatalities in 1959 down to 5.4 per 100,000 traffic miles. This is the same as that of national. In 1958, a total of 36,981 persons were killed on highways in the U. S. This was one person killed for each 178,600 vehicle miles, or one death per 1,852 registered vehicles. This was a big , improvement over the 1923-1927 period when there was one fatality for each 900 vehicles, or one death for each 54,900 miles. Asa whole, motor vehicles count for one death out of every 4,700 Americans. That is all improvement over 1937, when one out of every 3,250 Americans were, killed by motor vehicles. CARGO PLANE TERMINAL Gov. Harold W. Handley had his youthful state aeronatuics commission director, Richard L. Cunningham, unrolled some big maps at his press conference. Theme was that Indiana well may be come the jet cargo center of the world. O’Hare Airport in Chicago will reach its operating capacity by 1965. It will then be handling only passenger planes. Midway airport at Chicago cannot handle pure jet planes without buying additional land and the price of that land is prohibitive. Gary Municipal airport is hemmed in on all sides. Turbo-jet cargo planes with great load capacity have been promised for early delivery. We are on the threshhoii of-the pure jet cargo plane. A study by Indiana Aeronautics Commission shows that a jet cargo center could be built in Porter or Lake county on land available. Gov. Handley has asked the Commission, Purdue and Indiana University researchers, to proceed with detailed study of the feasibility of a jet cargo port in northwest Indiana. He will then submit this report to the new legislature that will meet in January.

“There’s nothing wrong with the younger generation that the older generation didn’t outgrow.”
HALF A MILLION IND. FAMILIES BORROWED FROM LOAN CO. IN 1959 More than a half-million Hoosier families last year faced money problems beyond their means and found a credit-saving helping hand in the services of Indiana’s licensed small loan companies. “These local businessmen furnished individual help to 639,623 families when they most needed it during 1959 with loans averaging $345.79,” said Ron Kiester, manager of American Finance Cos., Inc. “The reasons people borrow money and the uses to which they put it are many and varied,” said Mr. Kiester. There are six principal reasons for the use of consumer credit, to pay past-due and accumulated debts, to meet emergencies, to enjoy the use of goods and services while paying for them out of future income, to avoid disturbing savings and investments when making larger purchases, to improve living standards and for convenience and self-imposed savings programs. “Other uses of loans include health and cultural services, clothing, home and auto repairs, taxes, mortgage payments, moving expenses, education, rent, and purchase of labor-saving tools and appliances.” These small loans added up to $221,175,952 during the 12-month period, Joseph McCord, director of the Indiana Department of Financial Institutions has just reported. The figures are based on sworn annual statements sul> mitted by the 718 small loan licensees as of Dec. 31, 1959. From the Norwalk, Connecticut, Hour: “British government-subsi-dized medicine often referred to by Britons themselves as the terrible example of socialized medicine was given another jolt by an investigation by the British Medical Association. . . . “Singling out anew housing development on the outskirts of London, the researchers chose 2,500 inhabitants at random and quizzed them on their health and medical treatments. They discovered that even among those enjoying good health, the obsession of ‘free’ medicine has turned a majority into hypochondriacs. . . “Britain is on a gigantic medicine kick, brought about by placing medical treatment on a level with free samples of chewing gum.”
