creasing the minimum wage, Goldwater told his colleagues that if we could “release the full strength" of the free enterprise system in the United States, we would “do more to combat unemployment and bring about higher wages, higher profits, and better living conditions in one year than any government can ever do in its entire history. “We- are foolishly playing with dynamite,” he asserted, “When we inject the federal government further and further into our daily lives. “On the contrary,” he said, “we must exert our efforts to create sound fiscal and monetary policies and establish a climate conducive to economic growth.” “We believe that high wages which result from increased productivity have provided Americans with the world’s highest living standards,” Goldwater added. “But high wages established by government fiat —and not accompanied by an increase in output can only result in economic disaster for all of us.” I ‘ I Market Report i 1 Oct. 12, 1960 Wheat 1-79 Corn, shelled 1.00 Corn, ear -97 Soybeans ji~. 1-93 Oats Eggs .45 AT MILTON COLLEGE Joyce Lehr, 955 E. Dorcas Miller Takes Part In College Work Days Dorcas Miller, student at Goshen college, took part in the annual work day program of the school by working Thursday and Friday in Advance-News office and donating the money received to the college. In the past 13 years, students have earned about $91,000 for the college during the annual project. Money received this year will go toward improving the college cabin and riverfront area, development of the woods area used by the biology and agricultural departments, and planting trees and shrubs on the main campus. Addison, N. Y., Advertiser: “What probably gripes most Americans most is the fact the Russians capture one of our men spying over the Soviet Union, and they make a world spectacle out of his trial. We capture; scores of Soviet agents operating in the U.S.A., and most of them are simply sent back to Russia without fanfare. Certainly we cannot afford to lose the propaganda value of letting the rest of the world know America has been preyed upon by a whole ' swarm of spies for many years. It is high time our State Department stopped hushing tip the activities of these red agents, -and began telling the facts abroad so other countries in the world will know the United States has to practice counter - espionage, if the free world is to stay free.”
Antigo, Wise.; Journal: “Last year U. S. tourists spent two billion dollars overseas, about one billion more than visitors spent in this country. Thus, getting more foreigners to visit and spend in the United States is one way to help close the trade gap. It will also help relieve an economic pinch on the American domestic travel industry.” As far as we know, the U. S. is the only country that finds victQry just as expensive as defeat.

Seaway In First Year Fat Profit In U.S. Treasury
By Frank A. White Indiana’s bid for a deep water port to accomodate ocean - going freighters at Burns Ditch in-Port-er County, is waiting on an army engineer’s report. Gov. Harold W. Handley has conferred with the engineers and every indication is that the port will be approved and built. Some of the so-called “experts” who forecast that. Uncle Sam would have only red ink to shpw for spending some $124 million dollars on the St. Lawrence Seaway development, were wrong. The Seaway that promises to give Indiana an ocean port, was opened to deep draft vessels on April 25, 1959, a toll basis. During the 1959 navigation season, 6,595 cargo vessels transited the seaway with 20V2 million tons of cargo. The income Uncle . Sam got from its share of tolls was sufficient to pay all operating costs and to return to the Treasurer of the U. S. $2,150,999. This was applied to accrued interest and debt of the Development corporation. Congress authorized spending $l4O million in construction and our share was done for $124 million. The St. Lawrence Seaway Corporation of Canada joined with the U. S. in the building of the great waterway that will have a tremendous impact on Hoosier economy. The St. Lawrence River, together with the Gulf of St. Lawrence and our Great Lakes Basin, provides a continuous - waterway extending 2,342 miles into the heart of the North American continent from the Atlantic Ocean.
Our share was financed by revenue bonds and the " project planned- to be self liquidating and self sustaining. By use of 15 locks, oceangoing vessels and large lake type vessels are raised or lowered a total of 552 feet. This is the highest elevation large vessels are lifted in the world. 10 mile channel has been named the Wiley-Dondero Channel. This is fitting, for U. S. Senator Alexander Wiley, Republican, Wisconsin, did more than any other American to get the U. S. A. to undertake building the great seaway. GREATEST KILLER Old John Barleycorn, or alcohol, has a hand in over half of the fatal automobile accidents in the U. S. Such was the report of Mrs. Herman Stanley, Evanston, 111., corresponding secretary of Womens Christian Temperance Union at its Portland, Me. convention. She said that National Safety Council research showed drivers involved in fatal accidents after drinking alcohol totaled 48% in Delaware; 67% in Maryland,' 43% in Minnesota and 45% in Texas. This does not include the number of pedestrians ' killed after drinking intoxicants, she said. When they are counted in, the mixing of alcohol with motor vehicle driving is responsible for over 50% of the fatal auto deaths of the nation. The Star Spangled Banner started out as a patriotic song—and was a hit for so long that it was made our National Anthem, officially, on March 3, 1831.

Roy Hopewell on Group Studying Youth Recreation Ray Hopewell of Nappanee is a member of the youth and recreation division of the newly-formed Health and Welfare Planning Council, a part of Elkhart Coutity United Fund. The group is studying recreation needs in areas of the county outside the two urban centers of Elkhart and Goshen, where most facilities are located. If they determine that churches, schools, clubs and other local agencies have adequate programs, there will be no sense in competing with those groups, John A. Scott, planning chairman indicated, but if a need is found, programs will be developed, probably using United Fund money.
Beeville, Texas, Bee - Picayune: “It is our responsibility to educate our children, to support the members of our family in need, and to aid our neighbors who are in want. Life is not a game; we have to do our part. No government can be all things to all men and unless we face responsibility now we will find our lot much tougher in the future than we dreamed life could be.” Webster Groves, Mo., News - Times: “The fundamental principle of democracy is that the members Os the nation have to decide what they want. That seems to be where the trouble comes too many millions of moderns, debased by a steady diet of violence and fantasy on the screen and air, lack the ability or moral stamina to decide anything.”

Martinez, Calif., Gazette: “At a moment when frenzied orations are urging that the government ‘stimulate’ the economy to an annual growth rate of five per cent, the statistics on 1959 finally have come out. The Gross National Product went up about seven per cent last year, it turns out. Government spending programs can’t in themselves improve the real GNP. To spend, the government must take the money from some taxpayer and prevent him from spending or investing it. And it can never be a substitute for free enterprise. It can only provide the climate’ for business and industry which will provide the growth and the real Gross National Product.” Wash., lowa, Journal: “Out of recent automobile group meetings comes the sordid story of methods practiced by the Teamsters’ Union to fight the piggyback plan used by the railroads.... According to reports quantities of acid are being poured from under - pass bridges on the tops of new cars as they .move along beneath.”

HEALTH FACTS FOR HOOSIER FOLK Watch Out "For This One! Public health officials are worried. In the first five months of this year, there were 50 per cent more cases of hepatitis than (luring the same period last year. And the Service knows .very well that its figures don’t tell the complete story. There’s no reason to expect a real epidemic, perhaps, but good reason/ for everyone to learn something about this illness. Hepatitis, a disease which attacks the liver, is baffling to medical science and miserable for the victim. A virus causes hepatitis, but nobody’s been able to grow it in the laboratory, which means no vaccine can be developed for the present. Hepatitis is highly contagious, spreading thru infected food, milk, and water, and by touch. It can take anywhere from ten days to almost two months from the time you pick up the bug until the first symtoms appear. When they do, they include fever and chills, headache, tiredness, aching muscles, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. After about a week of this, the skin and the whites of the eyes may turn yellow with jaundice. Jaundice lasts about a week Or ten days. But hepatitis isn’t through with its victim yet. The patient is still thoroughly ill, and so infectious that he must remain
