rSE STEPLADDER FOR SAFER CLEANING The right stepladder can make your fall house-cleaning chores a lot easier,'quicker and safer. If you don’t have a good stepladder, get one. Then use a fewsimple rules and common sense to get the most from it. First, don't stand on the top step of the ladder, even if there’s something you can hold onto. Putting your weight at the top of the ladder makes it extremely tippy. When using a stepladder outdoors to remove screens and install storm windows, make sure

Susan Lowe will use a 1959 Westingliouse electric rar e to der onstrate anew- feature, called the Serv-Temp Roast Guar . found inly on a Westinghonse range, “1 can promise that every lomemak t who sees it will be intrigued," she states. "With this xciting lew device, a cook can rest assured that she'll never again have a r lined roast.” The Ro ist Guarc enables the cook to put a roast or fowl in the oven, set th s control for any degree of doneness and the meat will be done exactly tha way no matter how long serving is delayed after cookin t is com leted. “Let’s say you are doing a beef roast and want to serve it rare,” Miss Lowe explained. "You simply set the oven at 525 degri es and insert the Roast Guard thermometer in the meat. ' he meat fill be done in the regular time . . . and will be rere. But le Roast Guard sees to it that meat will remain rare almost inde nitely. io if the family Isn't home for dinner when you planned to ;rve it, jou have no worry. Even hours later, the roast will still be are. hot nd juicy, ready to serve whenever you’re ready. "When ,he inte nal temperature of the meat approaches the degree of < neness the cook has set the control to deliver (140 degrees is r re), the ) toast Guard begins to reduce the oven temperature slowly, thru atl ermostatic control of its own. By the time the meat tempei iture ge s up to 140, the oven temperature has been reduced to 14(. At th; t moment, the Roast Guard’s Serv-Temp signal begins the Cash, indi mating that the roast is ready. But it need not be served immediate y. The Roast Guard maintains both oven and meat temperature at almost indefinitely. Even though dinner is hours late, toe roast fill still be rare.”

LETTERS Dear Church Member: I visited your Sunday School recently and I was over joyed to see the number of empty seats, late teachers, and some who never did show up. I heard some lessons that were not too well prepared, and some teachers, presidents, and group leaders who had made no visits or contacts for the week. This made my heart leap with joy. I was so thrilled when people walked away from Sunday School, taking with them their wives, husbands and children, from the morning worship service. I always tremble when they attend the preaching service,"because there is a possibility that they might be saved. I went to the church office and looked over the membership roll - quite a list. I noticed so many of the members were not there. This was so wonderful I nearly laughed out loud. I want to urge you to put everything before Church -you don’t need to attend. Let someone else keep the church going. Then when you die, the church will be there so some of your friends can carry you in and out. I am always delighted at empty pews in the church for it means witnesses testifying that church attendance is not important. This really is a vote for my side. The thing that thrills me most of all is for people to get mad and leave the church. That helps my cause along as much as anything. Then there are those who never speak a good word for the church, but are constantly seeking to run it down. I am tempted to walk up to such a person and extend mv hand and say, “Shake Brother!” I’m writing this personal letter, begging you to stay away from the church school and morning worship. (And as many of the other church activities as possible.) Please keep in refusing to accept any responsibility. And don’t you help out financially. After all, you need every penny for the pleasure of yourself and family. And if you have any talents, be sure not to use them in church. These people who are loyal in their attendance and support of church give me a pain. Hoping to have you with me sooner than you think, I remain, Your Serpent Friend, Satan. (This ‘letter’ was brought in by Ora Curtis of Church of the Brethren.) GO TO CHURCH SUNDAY

Air Pollution Serious Even In Small Cities Estimates of tne cost of air pollution range from $7.5 billion to more than sll billion annually, and the price is mounting, according to the editors of Changing Times Magazine. In the future, the editors say. more people, more automobiles, more industries and more production may make clean air one of the nation’s scarcest natural resources. Already, air pollution and its resulting annoyances affect the more than 100 million Americans living in metropolitan areas. In addition, many other persons living in some not so big communities are breathing air they know is suspect or unfit. In addition to being annoying, these vapors can be dangerous. Many scientists feel there already is sufficient evidence, at least statistically, to associate air pollution with cancer of the lungs, esophagus and stomach and with arteriosclerotic and other heart diseases. They point to the greater incidence of deaths from these causes in urban centers where pollution is high. Lung cancer deaths are twice as numerous in cities, regardless of the smoking habits of the people. Besides the possible peril to the

The time to do something about pollution is the moment you notice it, the editors advise. If your town already has an air-pollution control setup, use it by calling in violations. Be sure your own property is in order. Don’t burn trash. Keep your furnace in good repair and your car carburetor adjusted. If you have detected a taint in the air, bother your mayor or health officer. It costs only 5 -ents, per capita per year in tax dollars to control many pollution problems. For a really serious condition, however, the cost can go up to 20 cents a person a year. MRS.
