‘Cuba Becoming Red Beachhead 90 Miles from US 9 by Dr. George S. Benson President—National Program While Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader, was being lavishly entertained and honored by Secretary of State Christian Herter in Washington a short time ago, a top reporter of Columbia Broadcasting System was in Cuba making an exhaustive study of the new Castro government. For more than a year prior., to Castro’s victory, CBS and other news agencies had participated in “documentary” reporting which built up the bearded young revolutionary as a “George Washington of Cuba”—in spite of the fact that known veteran Communists were leaders in his 26th of July movement. I OBS is to be commended for its belated report of facts. The CBS reporter was Stuart Novtins. In his telecast, Mr. Novins opened his report as follows. “Good evening. The inescapable fact is brutally simple. The island of Cuba—9o miles off our shores, site of the American naval base that guards our southern defense, anchor for our defense of the Panama Canal, and key to the political future of Latin America—this Cuban island is today a totalitarian dictatorship and is rapidly becoming a Communist beachhead in the Caribbean.” NO SAFEGUARDING And yet, our nation apparently made no moves to safeguard us from the disastrous results of the State Department’s actions aiding the Castro takeover of Cuba. In fact it would seem that influential people in Washington have been trying to create a climate for American acceptance of Castro so that the U. S. State Department can make him a loan of $25-or-sloo-milUon. Since the GBS telecast there have been these developments: (1) Castro has seized S3OO million worth of property in Cuba owned by Americans; (2) He has instigated a Communist “land reform” program; (3) Major Pedro Luis Diaz Lanz, Chief of Castro’s Air Force, fled Cuba and publicly charged that Castro is a Communist aadi

I 1 Market Report i 1 Sept 9, 1959 Wheat 1.72 Oats 70 Corn ...1..- 1.08 Soybeans 1.88 Eggs 30 the Communists are taking over; (4) Manuel Urrutia, Castro’s handpicked President of Cuba, has been kicked out for alleged “anti-Com-munist” feelings. In spite of these developments, Washington sources say Castro may get a big U. S. loan. And at the same time we seem to be doing nothing to counteract the apparent Communist seizure-of Cuba. REDS IN CHARGE Novins in his CBS television report gave details about the Communist takeover of vital phases of Cuban life—the military, the press, the school; rewriting Cuban history according to the international Communist line, etc. The Army is no doubt the most vital tool in the hands of the Communists. Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother, and announced successor as head of the revolutionary movement, denies—as does David Salvador —that he is a Communist. Novins reported: “The record shows that in 1953 Raid went to Vienna for a Communist-front Congress and then disappeared in Bucharest, behind the Iron Curtain, for several weeks. . . Members of the 26th of July movement told, this reporter that in 1957, Raul Castro threatened to kill his brother Fidel, over disagreements about rebel activity. Raul organized and carried out the kidnapping of Americans during the revolution. Raul Castro controls all the armed forces and police. His wife, Vilma Espin, has Communist association. His sister is at least a pro-Communist.” Raul has appointed Communists, Novins reports (and he names them one by one) to the key positions of command in the Cuban army and police forces. OUR OWN STAKE The two chief reasons I am continuing to call attention to the Cas-tro-Cuban situation are: (1> Cuba in the hands of the Communist international conspiracy constitutes a terrible danger to the safety of every American citizen. The CBS reporter stated the danger clearly: “Cuba—9o miles off our shores, site of the American naval base that guards our southern defenses, anchor for our defense of the Panama Canal, and key to the political future of Latin America. . (2) For reasons that have not been adequately explained, the leadership of the United States government aided the Communist cause in Cuba. A logical assumption would be that our government was either influenced by some sinister force working within our country, or was acting thru sheer ignorance. What new victories will the Reds engineer, with our aid, in Latin America? This is a question citizens should ask of our governmental leaders. i

LETTERS Dear Mr. Editor: As you sit in the snow and cold, I thought you might find very interesting, the attached photo and news release of someone from your community enjoying themselves in the sun. You have permission from our visitors and this office to use the photo and release, if you see fit. „ Today our temperature is 85 degrees, clear and sunny, with cool tradewinds blowing over Florida’s “Island of Eternal Sun”, Key West. The fishing here is “FISHNIK” (or as we say) “OUT OF THIS WORLD.” Sometime, if in the future you find time to visit with us, I personally, will roll out the “red carpet” and draw a diagram to the secret fishing areas. Your “FLshnik” friend Jim Sumpter Manager, Key West Chamber of Commerce (Mr. Editor got a kick out of this letter because on the day it was received daytime temperatures had dropped below 90 for the first time in two weeks. We’ suggest the Key West Chamber of Commerce get two form letters printed, one to send out in the summer. They may not believe it, but we don’t have snow and cold 12 months of the year in Indiana. It is such a blessing to receive the Nappanee Advance-News every
