Lew Thomas, asked the boys to bring a maple sapling to be planted in the school yard. •’Willie" had no knowledge of tree varieties and proudly trudged to school with an elm. As oftimes happens. Ihe other children derided him for not knowing the difference between an elm and a maple, and he burst into tears. Mr. Thomas, an understanding man dried his tears by planting his tree at “first base" where it withstood the rigors of boys' play and the elements of time for almost 60 years. Mr. Alexander is visiting the scenes of his boyhood in Millwood and Sandridge and says he is having the time of his life.
