This is said to have happened in Pittsburg, too, wbei;e it was to be supposed that the Roosevelt motto had been taken foe granted. - The worst thing which can befall a town, especially a small town, that is more harmful than a panic, is for people to keep nagging men who have always beep foremost with their money and energies Tn butlhittg up the institutions which give people some of the necessaries and comforts of life—making the community an acceptable place in whtch to live. There seems to be a sign now and then for returning prosperity.. Perhaps it first shows itself in the retail trade, -the manufacturer being the first and last man in a panic and a recovery therefrom. In Chicago the big wholesale merchants are taking a hopeful view of the situation. In an interview recently John V. Farwell, Jr. is quoted as saying: The new year is starting out very well. There is a good healthy demand for dry goods. The reason for this is that the stocks held by country merchants are so low that it is sary to replenish them. The orders are for immediate shipment and every day the demand increases. We are also shipping mauy orders that wereceived last Fall for Spring goods. Business will get better from-no won. It may be a little lighter than a year ago, but business then was unprecedented. This is surely a very hopeful sign. The only thing now necessary ia for business to adjust itself to sane conditions and things will go on swimmingly. THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT.
