NAPPANEE, ELKHART COUNTY, INDIANA, WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 9, 1899.
Meeting of Tbe Town Board; The regular meeting of tbe board of town trustees took place on Mon. day evening. There were present Trustees Coppes, Woodbury, Swezey, Clerk Hoover, and Marshal Weyburn. Notwithstanding three wcek9 bad intervened since the time of the last regular meeting, there was onderful accumulation of business aside from allowing claims entered upon the docket. As one member of the board remarked, perhaps they had forgotten something, it had been so long since they had met for the transaction of business. However, the clerk was there and so was tbe claim docket, and this was self-evident that the matter of allowances would claim the attention of the honorable body, anyhow. The bills as audited by tbe finance committee were ordered paid as follows: Reed Bro., unloading c0a1....... 9 9 HO Henry Smith, drawing gravet .. ; ..tWTv. —S t# Electric Appliance Cos., wire and fixtures.. 181 44 AmericanCarhoa Works,... .. 800 Oarlock Packing Cos 11 81 Kuhlman Electric Cos 89 75 Columbus A HockingCoatCo., cot 1 for June 48 52 Tribune Printing Cos., claim docket 8 00 B. The clerk stated that there were a few delinquent electric light patrons who had refused to pay the penalty of delinquency. This resulted iu an order to cut off theTdeaudescent i if bis at J. M. Keller’s, and tbe clerk was ordered to collect the account. The clerk reported tbe incandescent light revenue per month approximately at 9190, about equal to tbe point to which it dropped on tbe revision of tbe light schedule, with a present prospect of ao increase in tbe number of consumers. Trustee Coppes was of the opinion that the town should discard the business wiring for tbe incandescent lights, and turn that business over to a licensed electrician or some firm that would do that class of work, the same as a licensed plumber. A motion prevailed on this suggestion, that the town discontinue wiring for private consumers of the incandescent lights. Ed Frcvert, as a representative of Christian Dietrich, asked that tbe town furnish a water meter where the city water is being consumed in the erection of the Dietrich block. Mr. Frevert was asked to obtain a meter and place it for the gentleman. It was also suggested that his firm carry a few meters in stock, both for electric light and for water. The News man asked on behalf of a number of business men and residents on the west side of North Elm street, that a crosswalk be placed across Market street on the west side of Elm. The board took tbe oral petition under advisement and after some deliberation decided that, before cold weather sets in tbe crosswalk should be constructed, and a continuous walk on the same side of Elm street to the water-works should be built—two properties on that side of the street now being without sidewalks. A number of other matters were discussed. Among these, the matter of unlicensed plumbers doing work was again brought up. The waterworks superintendent was ordered, by general consent, to prosecute any and all plumbers working without license on any Jobs where tbe city water Is used. Io other words, the ordinance governing the plumbers is to be enforced as to the license feature. No other business coming before tbe board an adjournment was taken until the next regular time of meeting. His Life Was Saved. Mr. J. E. Lilly, a prominent citizen of Handibftl. Mo„ lately had wonderful deliverance from a frightful death. In telling of it be says: “I was taken with typhoid fever that ran into pneotnoDia. My lungs became hardened. He was a nice-looking young man and his landing in town startled the young females who await the coming of the new boy to town. John wasn’t slow to accommodate them with a reciprocal article. Syracuse Register: Tho Evangelical camp-meeting at Oakwood Park ■closed last Sunday evening after a very successful session. The attendance has been large throughout tho meetings and tbe very best order has prevailed. The association has made more money this season than any previous one and the members are well pleased with the financial condition of the association. The grounds have been beautified and a large fiumunt of labor has been put on tbe park and it is very attractive. Large numbers have camped there during; the meetTog; A number of new cottages have been built during the summer, and maby mere' are In contemplation. Tbe association may well feel proud of their camp-ground, and we doubt pot that many have received rich spiritual blessings during the meeting just closed. A Mother Tall. Big Sear* and a Small Pin. - At about 2:15 o’clock Friday morning a fire was discovered In the rear of the Hess boot and shoe store by the employes at the Hoffman bakery, who first gavo the alarm. The nightwatchman had some difficulty In pulling tbe bell rope with any effect and not many people were aroused until the water-works whistle sent out an appeal. The fire had gained good headway, covering a large portion of one section of the shelving and over that portion of the room occupied as an office surrounded by a railing. Here It had come in contact with an oil lamp which exploded and gave the fire new impetus.~<But from tho fact that tho Htoreroom was shut up perfectly tight no air could assist tbe llamos, and, as u consequence, the dense smoke caused the flames to ho held In subjection, so much so that tho Are could not be seen except by peering In at the rear window. One pipe lino was quickly laid to the roar of tbS store and the door forced open., In less time than it requires to write of It, the Are was put out, though it had reached a point beyond the capacity of any bucket brigade. The building, a one-story framo among others of Its kind on the north side of Market street, would, under favorable circumstances, have made a very bad Are. But, the luck io getting at it in time Is whoro “a stitch in time saved nine." And it was a lucky termination, us W. H.
