He was on his way to Columbus, O. He put up security for the debt. —President William McKinley will visit Winona on Sunday, Aug. 20tb, and a great day is expected. A letter has been received from the president in which he announced that be would spend Sunday, Aug. 20tb, at Wldod*. —Mel Firestone, who was playing with a baseball nine in a contest between clubs from different departments of an Elkhart factory, was struck between the eyes by a ball pitched by JobnPrlem. His nose was broken.
—Roy Brown, the boy tramp who some weeks ago was found by the side of the Big Four tracks near Milford Junction, having been struck by an engine and recovered in a Gosbeo hospital, was recently arrested at Fort Wayne for vagrancy. —Dave Stably has opened a stock of confections sod started a lunch counter in the room occupied by John W. Peters A Son, the tobacconists. Mr. .Stably will also give his attention to serving. —The county board of review last Saturday fixed the assessment of the following newspaper plants in the connty at the named: Review Publishing Cos., Elkhart, $5,500; News Printing Cos., Goshen, $5,006; Times Publishing Cos., Goshen, $3,000. —The contractor who is building the inter-urban, line between Mishawaka aod Elkhart now has 400 men employed in the work. Kurtz says he has been converted. —Milo 11. Crfpe, formerly of Napjpanee bad his left-leg broken at the ankle one day last week at Goshen while getting off a street-car. When he left the car while it was under way be bad to run to keep his balance. A woman committed suicide by jumping overboard, and a man and his son went insane. —There will be a Prohibition mass meeting—a gathering from all the counties of the 13th congressional district—at Maxinkuckee lake next Tuesday, July 25th,.t0 which all temperance people are invited. Eminent speakers will be In attendance. Arrangements are being made by a number of this place to go.
—Henry Sheets, employed as night watchman at the C. G. Conn horn factory at Elkhart, was arrested Sunday night on the charge of stealing silk, cotton, and leather trimmings from the instrument case room, and was held to the circuit court in S2OO bonds. He was handed over to justice through the Information of bis housekeeper. —Thomas Rhoads, of Centerville, 0., writes: “I suffered from piles for seveo or eight years. The remains were exhumed and wIU arrive in Elkhart on Monday for burial in the Sbaum cemetery. Deceased was 37 years of age and leaves a widow aod one child. Walters. —At Goshen there is an attempt being made to arouse the Interest of horsemen, bicycle men, baseball cranks, and others, in a scheme to purchase the old fair grounds for A place of amusement, that all the crowds of people may not be attracted over the inter-urban line to South Bend aod Elkhart. Whether or not the matter can be brought about depends wholly on the interest citizens take in the matter. —The county commissioners in session last week received and acted on the petition of W. B, Anglemyer and others for a road in Union township. The following viewers were appointed to meet on July 20th: William Blue, Benton township; Charles Dinehart, Concord; and Fred Young, Osolo.
