Mr. and Mrs. Troup, of Union township, were visiting friends in this vicinity the other day. Sleighing will make things move on in this part of the country if it continues any length of time. Miss Stuckman while out this way dost the road but was soon set right, by •instructions from neighbors. Some of the young people from near Warnersvillo attended the Dunkard -meetings at Nappanee last Saturday, which have been in progress for over a week. Everybody seems to agree that expostmasicr Brumbaugh will be our next J\ M. The teachers of Jeffersou township held their closing institue at this place last Saturday. The prayer meetings held at this place are largely attended, and have accomplished a great deal of good. It would be well for every teacher and •patron of the common schools to keep an eye on the school-book monopolies for a while. The person who writes a mean, scandalous letter to another without signing their name to it is in little business. It it a cowardly, base and unchristian like act. We do not wish to give our town any free "ads,” but we may say that there certainly will be a good chance for a titst-class, general store at this place, next spring. —Goshen News: It is announced tbgt a judge has made a decision which destroys the validity of the form of an affidavit for a marriage license which -has been in use for about fifty years in tfils state. It is that the words "of ■•awful age to many” and "that he knows no lawful objection” are illegal and void, which rulings make the affidavit and consequently the marriage •license Illegal.

The town clerk is hereby required] to see that the tax hereby authorized is properly/ placed on tax duplicate of said towu. Section 8. It is hereby made the duty of thel town Marshal to make out a complete list of all' owners of any dog or female dog over the age of six months, and report the same in writing to the town Clerk. Section 4. If such Marshal in making such list shall And any dog or female dog without owner : after due dilligence, he shall kill such dog or female dog and make a report thereof to the town Clerk, with a description of such dog or female dog, and he shall not be liable to any claimant or owner for damages. All ordinance to establish Arc limits and promote security against Are, and to estabish the ollice of the Fire Worden for the incorporate Town of Nappanee, Indiana. Section 1. Be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the incorporate town of Nappanee, Indiana: The Board of Trustees shall appoint some competent person as Fire Warden for the incorporate town of Nappanee, whose duty it shall be to jn-r----form such duties and enforce the ordinances in relation to Are protection which may front time to time be prepared by such Board of Trustees. I Section 8. Nothing herein shall he construed to prohibit the Marshal from being appoiuted as such Fire Warden and performing such duties. Sections, it shall be unlawful for aiiy owner or occupant of any building room, rooms, booths, or sheds, within the incorporate town of Nuppanee, to keep any gunpowder, dynamite, giant powder, nitroglycerine, or any explosive material, or place any dangerous or coinhustable material, or place any ashes in wc-oden vessels, where the same may be exposed to tire or endanger any property. Section 4. It shall be inlawful for any person in the night time to sell >r exhibit gun powder, .gasoline, naptha or any other explosive material. Section 5. It shall be the duty of the Fire Warden Imiii time to time, to inspect the premises within the Are limits of said town, and examine the chimneys, stoves and Aues, and report the condition thereof, and wherever necessary shall notify the owners or occupants of any necessary protection required for sufety but his inspection shall not be made at unreasonable hours, and he shall at all times be courteous and gentlemanly in the exercise of his duties. Section 6. It shall be unlawful for any person to pluce auy ashes or wooden vessels containing Are within 50 feet of any combustible wall or material, or to keep shavings or other combustible material in any place when the keeping of the same shall endanger the property of another. SECTION 7. It shall be the duty of all owners, occupants or persons having the care and control thereof of any furnaces, Aues, chimney, pipes, stoves, or any place where Ares are had, to, upon notice by the Fire Wardeu that the same are dangerous or unsafe, to immediately put the same iu a safe condition. SECTION 8. It shall be the duty of all owners or occupants of auy building, booth, barn, or public or private structure to use due care and uilligence to prevent Are and to keep their promisee in as safe a condition as their meaus and circumstances will allow; and shall at ull times comply with the orders of the Fire Wardeu when the same shall be reasonable. SECTION 9. That no person shall hereafter erect any building where "outer wall or walls, or roof, shall consist of wood, or other combustible material, nor maintain any such building, hereafter erected within the limits of the incorporate town of Nappaueo, within the following limits: Beginning for the same at a point commencing at the corner where Walnut and Elm streets cross at the crossing of said streets, l-uuning thence south to the south side of B. & O. railroad grounds, thence westerly to a point south of Clark street, thence north to the ccnterpf Walnut street, thence east to the place of beginning, including all the the territory within said limits, and that no building erected fronting on Main and Market street, within said Are limits, shall be less than two stories high, SECTION 10. Any person violating any of the provisions in sections 1,8, 8,4, 5, G. 7,8, and 9, shall be Aned in any sum not less than ten dollars nor more than one hundred dollars. SECTION 11. Be it enacted that this ordinance be published in the Nappanee News for two sne cesslve weeks, and that the same take effect on and after the 18tb day of February, 1889. GEO. ARNOLD, Pres. Attest, P. A.TJARLY, Clerk. ORDINANCE NO. 4. An Ordinance relating to penal offences and pre. scribing penalties for the violation of tnis ordinance on any of the provisions thereof. SECTION 1. Be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of the incorporate town of Nappanee, Elkhart county, State of Indiana. That all persons within the limits of said incorporate town, who "not having visible means of maintaining: themselves, and without employment, or shalr be found idle, loitering or rambling about, or staying in groceries, stores, drinking saloons, houses of ill fame or houses of bad repute, gambling houaes, railroad depots, bulldlug arbors, booths, shops or cars. Are engine houses, or be found tresspassing in the night upon private premises of another, or keepers or exhibitors of, or visits any gambling table or gambling house or fortune telling house, or who shall go about obtaining money or any thing of value, by claiming to be fortune tellers, or who shall disturb any public or private school or any lawful assemblage of inhabitants, lawfully gathered to gather for any legitimate purpose, or who shall use profane, indecent or lascivious language in any public place shall upon conviction, be Aned in any sum not leas than three dollars nor more than ten dollars. SECTION 8. No person within said incorporate town shall practice any game, trick, device or other method with intent to cheat, defraud or in any way to obtain any money or thing of value, without returning a lawful equivalent therefor, and in all cases shall it be unlawful to use deceit to obtain any thing of value. SECTION 8. It shall be unlawful for any person in said incorporate town to make any noise, disorder, tumult or create any unnecessary alarm to the disturbance of the peace of the town, or to encourage, permit or aid in making or creating any disturbance, taiuult or noise to be made in or about his, her or their premises or house. SECTION 4. It shall be unlawful for any person to inhumanly and unnecessarily expose.any dumb animal to cold or the inclemency of the weather, within said town. SECTION 5. It shall be unlawful for any person to appear in any public place or on any public street or alley, iu a state of nudity, or make an indecent exposure of his or her person, or for any male to appear in any public place in female attire or any female to appear in any public place in male attire in said town. SECTION 6. It shall be unlawful for any person within the limits of said incorporate town to commit any indecent, lewd, immodest, bawdy or Altby act, or utter or speak any lewd, bawdy or filthy words in any public place or in any private place, where such person may be without right. SECTION 7. It shall be unlawful fur any person to speak or utter any indecent, abusive or insulting words, or to use any vile or derisive epithets concerning of or to any other person in the hear, ingot such other person or others, within the limits of said town in any public placetheroat. SECTION 8. It shall be unlawful for anv peis, son to perform or exhibit any lewd, indecent er unmoral play within the limits of said incorporate town. SECTION 9. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep, maintain, admit or be an inmate or in any way or manner contribute to the maiutainance or support of any disreputable, disorderly or bawdy house, or any honse of assignation or illfame, or place for the practice of adultry or fornication, or be interested as the owner of, or proprietor or employee or the landlord of any such house or place within the limits of said town. SECTION 10. It shall be unlawful for any common prostitute to wander in. In or about any street, alley or public commons, or at any public resort, or by signs, devices or any inducements to solicit intercourse, or in auy manner behave in an indecent or lascivions manner. SECTION 11. It shall be unlawful for any per son to harbor, keep or allow on or about their premises any strnmpet, whore, or lewd woman, or suffer or permit any each strumpet, whore, or lewd woman to ply her vocation thereat, bat nothing herein shall be construed to prohibit any person from doing an net of charity, or iu aiding in the reformation of any unfortunate person. SECTION 18, It shall be unlawful for any person within the limits of said town to knowingly and designedly, fora lassclvlons purpose be founa associating and keeping company with any strumpet, whore or lewd woman, or to encourage whoring and prostitution. SECTION 18. It shall be unlawful for any person to have in his possession or custody any pick

It shall be unlawful for any per son lo frequent, visit, play at. or be an inmate of. door keeper, owner, solicitor, a better, or pimp., for, or of aiiy house, store, grocery or ball room, or any other public place where any devices of any description for gambling, or any games for amusement foe gain, are kepi: or where anything of value 1 disposed of by chance, within the limits of said ton n. SECTION 15. It shall be unlawful for any person waniingly to injure, or cause to be injured, any properly of another, or any public property, buildings, grounds, fences, or any fruit, shade, or ornamental trees; or the box or protection around the same, planted or growing in auy street, alley, or public grounds, within the limits of said town. SECTION IC. It shall be unlawful for any person to be found, or lodging in any house, out house, building, car. or premises of another, within the limits of the town, without the conscut of the persou having control of the same. SECTION 17. it shall be unlawful for any person to Ay a kite or to engage in any sport or pastime or exercise likely to scare horses or embarass the passage of vehicles, or in any way retard or iinpeade the free use of any street or alley, within the limits of said town. SECTION 18. It shall be unlawful for any person to cast or throw any stone, ball or other missile upon, against or at any building, tree, or any public or private property, or at auy person, or across any street, alley, or along the same, within said incorporate town. SECT.ON 19. It shall be unlawful for any person to leare auy horse, horses, or other animals, attached to aiiy vehicle, wagon, cart,'carriage, sleigh, or sleds, in any street, alley, or in any public place, within saul incorporate town, with out securely fastening said horse, horses, or other animals. SECTION 80. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or leave open any cellar door, grating, vault or opening, or any sidewalk, or suffer the same to be kept open, or suffer any sidewalk or passageway along their premises, in said incorporate town to become out of repair, or unsafe for the free use of the same, or to endanger the life or limb of auy person. SECTION 21. It shall be unlawful for nny person to hitch any horse or other animal, within said towu. without securely fastening or hitching the sume so that such animal or animals oan not go upon or over any sidewalk, or crossing in said town, or so to hitch any an mal a to injure any shads tree or ornamental tree, or the protection thereto, or to any awning or lump post in said tojvn. SEC 1 lON 22. It ‘shall be unlawful for any person having the care or control of any dray cart, wagon, carriage, buggy or other vehlole. or for any person on borse-baok, to allow or oanse the same to be stopped, or to ete - over, aoroes or on any street- crossing, foot path, or sidewalk, on any street or alley in said town. SECTION 23 It shall be unlawful for any person within the limits of said incorporate town, wilfully to make a false alarm of tire, or t > employ any bellman to use, or cause to he used, any bell, horn or bugle, or any other sounding Instrument, or to employ.any device, noise, or p- rforu ance tending In any ca e to procure the unnecessary collection of people on the streets, sidewalks, or other public places in said town, to the obstruction of the same, or in any way by incendiary speech, or unlawful methods to iucite any unlawful acts whatever, or in any way encourage the unlawful asst mblage of the Inhabitants of said incorporate town. I SECTION 24. It shall be unlawful for any person within the limits of said town to post, oi paint, or cause to be posted or painted on any public or private wall, fence or bridge, o. on any awning, post, lamp post, or anv other structure, any written or printed bill, advertisement, or notice whatever, without the consent of the owner, or person having the control of such plaoe. SECTION 25. It shall be unlawful for auy person within said incorporate town to puli down, deface, or destroy any writte .. printed or t ainted sign, notiee, or advertisement, or bills posted up m any plaoe. except by the consent of the owners, or persons having the cont ol of such place SECTION 2G It shall be unlawful for any person within said town to resist, or molest, or in any way hinder any town ffioer o said town, in the disoharge of his lawful duties as such offi- • er, or refuse to assist any poece officer when calle-l upon SEC I lON 27. It shall be unlawful for any person wiibln the limits of said town to falsely Krsonate any officer, or to wear any star or dge pertaining to any officer of said town. SECTION 28- It shal l be unlawful for any person to ride or drive any animal or vehicle uv o , or over any sidewalk. In said town, except in the necessary crossing of the same. SECTION 29. It shall be unlawful so any person within the limits of said town to ride or drive any animal or vihicle at a rate faster than six miles an hour. SECTION 80. It shall be unlawful for any person to shoot or fire any gun, pistol, revolver, or arrow with sharp, metal point, or to shoot or throw any rocket, equlb. fire cracker, or ball of tire, or make any display of any dangerous tire won s within the limits of said town, except in sueh plaoes and at snoh times as may be designated by the Board of Trustees, of said town. SECTION 31. It ahall be unlawful for any person to play at any game ot ball or qnalta, or engage in any athletic eport, or to congregate in any public plaoe or to engage In any unlawful games on Sunday, within the limits ot said town. SECTION 32. It shall be unlawful for any person to intrude, enter, or remain in, or upon the private premises ot any other persou, or persona or corporation, against the will or consent ot the person in charge of euoh premises, or to enter upon me private premises of another to engage iu or eneiteany quarrel or disturbance. Section 33. It shall be unlawful for any person to encumber ar obstruct the sidewalk on any street or alley within said incorporate town to a greater distance than three (3) feet from the building occupied for a store, shop, saloon, office, or waroroom, except in the necessary removal of goods, wares and merchandise into, ont of, or from such place of business; nor for a longer time than three hours, except by the leave of the Board of Trustees of said town; or build or maintain any tire in the rear of any building within fifteen feet thereof, or to endanger the property of another. Section 34. It shall be unlawful for any person to be found loitering at any public resort, depot or depot grounds, or to be upon any railroad track, or in anyway interfearing with any person in passing to and fro upon any platform of any depot, or being in any public place to the detriment of the public, unless such person shall be in the discerrge of their legitimate duty. And any person having the care or control of any depot, railroads or place of resort, are hereby empowered to arrest without warran t any person violating this section and take the person so arrested before some justice of the peace having jurisdiction and charge such person under oath of the violation of this section of the above ordinance. Section 33. It shall be unlawful for any person to throw any rubbish or paper into any street or on auy sidewalk in said town, or to place, leave, or permit to placed or left, any wood or vehicle or obstruction on or in any street or alley or in any manner to till up or obstruct or put any filthy matter in any gutter or sewer or to make any excavation in any street, sidewalk or alley within said town, excepting when necessary for the improvement, repairs or betterment of thoir premises, without the consent of the Board of. Trustees of said town. Section 36. It shall be unlawful for any person to occupy or use for his or her private use, or to erect or maintain any structure, stores or other obstruction on any street, alley or sidewalk or other publlo grounds of said town, without consent of the Board of Trustees of said town. Section 37. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep, harbor or suffer to

run at lar*;,-, any cross or vicious dog or bitch; within said ineoperatc town. Section 39. It shall be unlawful for any persou or railroad company to run any engine or train at a greater rale of speed ttiau eight miles an hour within the limits of said incorporate town. Section 40. It shall be unlawful for any person to unlawfully take and appropriate to his or her own use auy property of auother or to be found treaspassing iu any yard, garden or premises of auother. Section 41. It shall be unlawful for any person lo place or leave or cause or suffer to be placed or left any dead horse or any other dead animal within the limits of said incorporate town without properly buried; or who shall plucuflhny dead animal, ofiVJ pr putrid, decaying or-offensive matter into any iiichor stream within the limits of said town. And any person violating the provision of tnis section shall iu addition to the penalties of this ordinane shall he liable to said town , for the cost and expenses of hurrying said animal or the removal of such filth and twenty per pent, damages for the use of said town to be recovered in any court o.u complaint tiled without relief or exemption. Section 4'J. It shall be unlawful for any person to go upon, into, or near at. any dwelling house or premises of another and use any abusive or insulting or indecent or profane or derisive language or epithet to, of, or concerning any occupant or inmate of such premises within said town. Section 43. It shall be unlawful for any person having any infectious or pestilential disease to he in auy publicplace, school, church or assembly within the corporate limits of said town. Section 44. It shall be unlawful for any t ersou to follow the vocation of a common beggar or to go from house to house seeking aid or asking for food <>r raiment excetping by permission of the Board of Trustees of said town. Section 45. It shall be unlawful for any person to conduct or manage any theater, circus, caravan, menagerie, show or similar amusement without firs' obtaining a town license. Therefore such license shall be had on payment to the Town Clerk of the sum of ten dollars for any circus or menagerie and for theaters or other shows at the rate of two dollars per day and fifty cents Clerk's fees in each case. Any person violating the provisions of this section shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and fine in any snm not less than the amount of the license so required. Section 46. It shall be unlawful for any person to erect or mantain, place or continue or cause to be erected, mantained, placed or continued any private building, store, dwelling house, fence or construction hereafter to bo put up projecting upon any public ground, street or alley or sidewalk in said incorporate, town. Section 47. It shall bo unlawful for any person to erect, continue or mantain any nuisance to the injury of the comfort or health of any citizens of said town or to the public of said town in general. Section 48. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or mantain any place or premises so as to become nauseous, foul or offensive. Section 49. It shall bo nnlawful for any person to suffer or permit rubbish, manure, filth or weeks to accumulate in any street or alley adjacent to liis other premises. Section 50. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep any stock, swine, cattle, horses, mules or other animals upon or about their premises in a filthy condition so that the same shall become offensive to any person or persons living adjacent thereto within the limits of said town. Section 51. It shall be unlawful for any person to be engaged or found encouraging dog fighting or cock flghtiug in any public place within the limits of said town. Section 52. It shall bo unlawful for any person to exhibit any curiosity, monstrosity, panorama or other similar devices without first obtaining a license therefor. Such license may be had by paying to the Town Clerk the sum of one dollar per day and fifty cents additional for his fees. Section 53. It shall be unlawful for any person to engage in peddling in said town without license, and suoh license may be obtained by paying to the Town Clerk the sum of two dollars per day for traveling on foot and selling his wares, and three dollars per day for driving frojn place to place with a team and five dollars per day for selling goods at puhlio outcry and fifty cents additionla in each case for Clerk’s fees. Provided, this section shall not be construed to prohibit selling home or domestic stofefes or selling household goods at public or vendue sales. Section 54. Any person violating any section of this ordinance shall he deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction fined in any sum not less than one dollar nor more than ten dollars excepting where in said ordinance the penalty is otherwise provided. Whereas an emergency exists it is ordered that the above ordinance be in full force and effect from and after its passage and that the same be published for two consecutive weeks in the Nappanee News. Mr. Kaufman informs the News, these will be the last services he will hold in Loeke until after the Ist of April, at which time the use of the hall will be obtained, the Church having purchased the same. The hall is to be re-seated with comfortable seats, and services will then be continued every two weeks.
