The Misses Sarah And Ollie Hower, encouraged by a number of their friends, perpetrated a complete surprise on their sister Mattie last Thursday evening, the occasion being her 2l*t birthday. They had a pleasant time, and Miss Mattie received a handsome photograph album in remembrance of the occasion. While on our way from Dekalb county last Monday we stopped long enough at Garrett to call on Charley Camp.. We found him finely located and doing a good business in the drug trade. Texas, and possibly Moxictp before tlleir return.—Goshen Time*. The remains of Mr. Curtis Hinman, who died at Rhode*. lowa, on Monday, were brought to Goshen on Tuesday and buried on Wednesday. Mr. Hinman was raised in this county and atone time was in business in this city and also at Nappanee. Bit had resided in lowa only aboot two months. The funeral services were held at the rasidenoe of bis father, Mr. C. A. Hinman. He leaves a widow and two children, and a largq circle of friends. —Goshen Independent.

Harr : son township, but that has nothing to do . with his failure. i We have been informed that a number of the farmers around Wakarusn and some in Harrison township have organized for the purpose of manufacturing cheese. The work is to be superintended by several brothers by the name of Ramsden, recently from Switzerland, and who are well experienced in the work. For some time past, the hen establishmentof Geo. W. Slabaugh, east of town, bad been disturbed by an owl. and after repeated efforts with the gun to bring his hawkahip to time, the steel trap was resorted to last Friday night and placed on a pole reaching above an apple tree near the house. Not paying pailicnlar attention as to the arrangement of things on the top of the pole, bnt with an eye on the henroost, the owl lighted. The trap worked to a charm, and the' bird found himself a prisoner and aeon in the hands of Mr. Slabaugh’s two ; hoys. It proved to be the largest owl ever seen here, measuring four feet and live inches between the tips of the wings. Last Sunday, while Geo. Whitmer, with several others. Was out hunting in the woods a mile west at town, bis gnh was discharged by slipping off a stamp on which he was standing, sending the contents of one barraT into his left leg, about half way between the knee and hip joint; and had it not been for the timely arrival of Frank Coppes, who compressed tbe wound and stopped the flow of blood till* medical aid arrived, be would haye died soon. He was brought home and aQ attention possible given him. On examination it was found that tbe load entered on the front ride and penetrated upward* and obliquely backwards, lodging eight or ton inches from .where it entered.. Peter Housoner was reported drowned in the Kankakee marsh while bunting, but on Monday be returned home alive. Tbe grain bnver at Leesburg was found missing a few days ago, sbo the wheat that he had in the elevator, together with a large lot that belonged to farmers about there, amounting in all to about 3,000 bushels. Tbe lndianian-Republican of last week reported a ease of attempted poison in Seward township in that county. James M. Riley was the intended victim and William and Belle Bicketts, man and wife, are the guilty ones. The B. A O. time-card has been changed this week to conform with tbe central time, which is about 28 minutes slower than local time at this place. The 19tb meridian was selected from which to reckon it. This meridian passes through Omaha, Nebraska. Last Sunday, Harvey Gentzhorn was fooling with an old pistol, at the corner ot Cowan A Peddycord’s store, by patting cartridges in it and exploding them by means of a robber attached to it in some way. One was discharged and after tbe ball had ' been deflected from its course by striking, first a post and the building! it struck Curtis Miller in the breast, who, with some other little boys was standing atonnd. The ball hail, however, spent its force, but nevertheless, someone of them was in great danger of being seriously, if not fatally injured. This is another instance of boys’ recklessness, and a certain extent to which their cu.iogit? will lead them if not restrained by wiser beads. This shoo'd be a warning to other boys, and a caution to parents. im Lydia C. wife of Jacob Hooaouer, died at her home In this place last Saturday evening, after lingering two years with consumption, aged 28 years, 1 month and 14 days. A husband and three little children remain to mourn their loss, as well as.a large circle of sympathizing friends. The deceased was a member of the United Brethren denomination for a number of years. Her funeral took place at the U. B. church on Monday, and tbe remains were taken to the Bremen cemetery for interment.
