NAPPANEE NEWS. THURSDAY, NAJ. 12 . 1881. Life In Borneo nnd Madagascar. The island of Borneo i/i inhabited by a considerable variety of races, of very different origin and different degrees of civilization. The most important numerically are the Dyacks, the Malays, the Chinese, and the Buginese. The Dyaks are generally regarded as the most aboriginal, and aie broken into numerous tribes. The Malays are a people of .low stature, being, as travelers ti ll us, from four and a half to five feet in height, while the Dyaks are taller, but still considerably shorter than the average European. In general among the Dyaks neither, beard nor whiskers aro present, but this does not hold good of all the tribes. Tattooing is commonly practiced bv most of the tribes. The men generally go bare-headed or wear a bright-colored kerchief. It has been the custom with many tribes to presorvo the Hkulls of tiieir slaughtered enemies as trophies of their snccess in war, as the possession of a certain numner of human heads is necessary before a man can be admitted to some of the most important of the social privileges. The Dyak is intelligent, arid in moral character is lar superior to the civilized Malay, being unsuspicious and hospitable, and honest and truthful in a striking degree. The greater portion of this race have substantial dwellings, and cultivate rice, the banana, sugar cauo, and some cotton and tobacco for their own cousumpj tion. The distinction between Land Itynks and Sea Dyaks is founded not upon the localities they inhabit, but upon the favorite pursuits of tlie respective tribes, which lead some to cultivate the soil and others to a life on the waters. The inhabitants of Madagascar number about 5,000,000, and are divided into two groups, the black of the western slope, and the olive of the eastern. The political divisions are four in number. The Hovas are the ruling tribe, a race of middle height, well proportioned, with straight or curled linir, aud hazel eyes. The Government is a military despotism, and although Christianity lias been adopted, still many yet practice tlie heathen customs, such as infanticide aud polygamy. The Madagascans are.inuch addicted to divination, which they practice according to certain definite rules, with J.lie help of Ivans, rice, straw, sand, or any other articles that can be easily counted or divided. Trials by ordeal until within a few years prevailed. .Singe Terms. The general term used to designate an actor is “ fakir," a word which originally meant a magician. From it. is coined lire verb “ fake,” which means to imitate or sham. Few actors ale willing to acknowledge that other actors are good; heneg the slang of the theater is used to designate bad actors. Os these the most frequent are “duffer,” “snide actor” and “bumactor.”" The “ variety”play- , er is looked down upon by the legitimate ■■tor, nnd is called a “bam.”
