NAPPANEE NEWS'. "TH .JULY h. rs'l.J Origin of the “ Baker’s Dozen.* Close by Market street—now Broadway—lived and prospered a baker, the first man that ever baked New-Tear cakes—in fact, the inventor of them: The name of our friend was Volekert Jan Pietersen Tan Amsterdam, commonly known us Baas. He was Dutch from his large feet to ids round bald hgad.mml J one or ran thing that was not Dutch, die was a regular attendant at tiie old Dutch church, but, nevertheless, in constant fear of being bewitched. His wife, Maritje, was economical oven to saving the parings of tier nails, and his gingerbread -babies were always made in'imitation of liis children, it was Now-Year, eve, 1055, and Baas was in his shop dealing out takes for small pieces of money, called wampum. Ho had taken an extra glass et mm in honor of St. . Vieholaus, when ho heard a sharp rap, i and in walked as ugly an old woman as 1 ever ho hud set his eyes on. “I want a dozen Now-Y, ar cookies,” she screamed. • “ Vell7(Ten,you needn’ sbeak so loud,” replied Baas. “Duyvel! I ain’t leaf, den.” ‘•‘l want a dozen,” screamed the oli woman, “and hero is only twelve.” “ Veil, den, und vhat de. duyvel is . ilwelf but a dozen'?’’ .-wild the baker. “ I tell you I want one mere! ” she shrieked. “ Veil, den,” said he, “yon may co to de duyvel uhd get anoddcr; you vou’t get it here.” From this time on our baker’s wife and himself were made miserable. Their money and cookies were taken away by iufisible hands; their bread cither rose out of their sight or sank into the earth; their famous brick oven was torn down, and poor Baas pelted with his own bricks; Maritje became deaf; -Baas was’' black and blue from bead to toe; and such a life as he led was purgatory. Thrice the old woman thrice was she sent to “Jc duyvel.” And et last, in his agony, Baas bethought j himself of St. Nieholaus, who advised !uni, on hearing of his troubles, when ho counted a dozen to count thirteen. “ By St. Johanhes.de Do iper, put St. Nieholaus is a grout plockhead 1” ; thought Baas; and w hile lie was thus' thinking,’“Bt. Nick hud vanished, and in ! his stead was the . old woman. She re- I peated her demand' for “ duo more” and Baas, remembering St. Xiekolaus,. aecec'led to her demand, when she ex- j claimed, “The spell is broken, and henceforward a c'.oz.'n is thirteen, and thirteen is a dozen.” And, taking a i eookv with an ofluy of the good saint on it, she made Baas swear that ever af- ■ terward twelve should be thirteen, os a ' type of the thirteen mighty; States that should arise obit of the ruins' of the Gov- i eminent of Vuderiandt. i It is well know n how terribly St. Nicholaus revenged himself upon those who I set themselves np against the venerable ' eust.< uas of their ancestors, and refused the homage to him to whose good offices it was owing that this, his favorite city, has surpassed all others in beautiful damsels, valorous young men, mincepies, oliekoeks, and New-Year cookies. — llarper’a ifar/azine.
