No dojbt our many hundred readers have been wondering why Tee News has not made them its regular visit for the past two weeks, and have probably came to the conclusion that it had “gone under.” It would not sr. m strange to us if they had, for not reji ivinr if. for iw > weeks, with no • •xplanati:• trom us before the suspen--inn-, would cause you to form various opinions about The News. We are . dad that wo are enabled this week to i.ve our readers the “why’s” and where-forV’ of thp whole business drat hat-caused us so touch trouble: and expense. On the 7th of March, 1879 j we nurel.actl our office from J. H. Brubak 'r. d' Wakarusa, for which wo were to jay him three hundred dollars. For this amount we were to receive two po 8-os type and fixtures. We gave niffi tur note, (payablo as fast as we • ■ ail J} secured by u chattel mortgage. On the material, and was to receive the second press after our removal to this I'ace, But it never came. Now, We cave him tliis mortgage on the 7ih of . W.trehpand on or about the 16h of *1 ay we gave our . brother a note for - -. xt_ utliars, payable one year .(ter date, and his’notc was also secured by a chattel mortgage on our office, . and he had it duly recocded within a I>y or two after it was. given. Mr. .Brubaker who, by the w y, is an at. i ruey, never had his mortgage record'd for over two months after it was e ven, and consequently our brother libel the first mortgage, and, according t law, Brubaker bad none at all. thinking that we were eli.ating him, sought to play a “fine little game” on us, by bringing LouiW. Vail, a notary public, of Goshen, w>'o is mean enough to do any little dirty trick that he can make a nickel it, and they forged a re-acknowl ' dgement to the mortgage that we had g ven Brubaker. They then went and Bad it re-recorded on the 9th of Oct. u.i-Friday, Nov. 7th, this forget Vail ~ me to onr office, armed with this n i.rthless mortgage and an indemnify j„g bond, and demanded us to give -him possession.
