J A. 11. SMITH, KMitor. -=r‘ <■ ■■ ■ THUKSDAY, SBPf 4, 1879. A WO HI) TOoVR HEADERS. Probably £2O 000 go out of Elkban county annually to pay for newspapers printed in aud other gn at cities. Large Bums go out each year for job printing. All or most of this money ought to be paid to our county newspapers. Thk News is now one of 'lie leading journals, and has as large a circulation; gives all the news and leading matter any citi i m can desire in a weekly paper. We intend to give the Foreign and Domestic News, the Markus, tlielproceedings of Congress and the ture, the Religious news, besides the local news firm all parts of the county and neighboring counties. Our immense circulation, rapidly increasing since The News was enlarged, makes it a des Table advertising modular. We will publish advertisements and do-job work so low as to warrant satisfaction to all. Strangers who read The News judge the character of . Nappauee and our business min by the business appearance and advertisements in their heme paper. Every man should help to increase our circulation. —We aregiermantly 'estate* lished, and here we intend to make our home for life. We will not be satisfied until our circulation' numbers one thousand , and, while we are working for the best interests of Nappanee ; the country surrounding it, and the county in which we are situated, it is no more right that y6u should try and indues all those who are not already subscribers to give us their names at once. —The Inter-State Industrial Exposition of Chicago, has become one of the established and recognised institutions of the American continent, reflecting the progress of the country in Industry, Science, Invention and Art, and attracting to its Annual Exhibitions delighted hundreds of thousands of visitors from all parts cf the country, who are unanimous and emphatio in expressions of gratified surprise at the aggregation of novelties everywhere spread out for their inspec tion. The exposition of 1879, commencing September 3, and continuing to Oo.ober 18, will mantain the character of the series in the number and quality of its individual exhibits as well as in the general excellence and progressive development.

—Od Moodiy of this week, Joaeph Hickson and others, representing the Orand Trunk railway, purchased the western division of the Chicago and Lake Huron railroad. This division extends from Lansing to Valparaiso and completes the line of the Grand Trunk as far as Valparaiso. The con necting link from Valparaiso to Chicago is to be rapidly constructed, and the line will then be complete. The South Bend Register says that new steel rails will be laid the entire length of the road, anew iron bridge will replace the wot den structure at the Bend, and ibe entire line will be put in first class shape at once. This is cheering intelligence.— The Entir • prise. ' —The News has as large a circulation as any paper in the couuty (except the Goshen papers) and its rates of advertising less in proporiion to its circulation which is the chief element of value, to the advertiser, than any other newspaper in the district. The demand made upon its 1 advertising columns show that the people fully ap preciate the cheapness of its rates, and its great value to them as an advertis 1 tog medium. —Sixty thousand tons of iroß ore have lately been imported from the North of Africa far making Bessemer •leel at Bethlehem, Scranton, and Baldwin, Pa. It came s* ballast, and can therefore compete hr price with that mined in Pennsylvania. [t /contains more pborpborus than the iron ores of this country and Europe, and is belter for steel manufacture. — Pierceton Independent. —Parents should take The News and send it to their children. No. biog pleases and relieves them mure than to ead the news from home. It can’t be written in a letter. By a careful estimation it is believed r bar The News is read by at least 12.000 people.

From our Correspondents tie will not bo responsible tor wbnt nitty appear under the übove bend MIL FORD. Friday is show day. Let everybody be on the look-out for confidence men. We have seven or eight doctors in town, yet we saw Dr. Brumbaugh, of Gravelton, here Monday night. A committee of ladies, viz: Miss Kate McLaughlin, Mrs, Dennis, Miss Mattia Becknell, Miss Mary Miller, and several others went to work last week to prepare a festival for the benefit of Elder McDermot, of the Dcciple churoh, and so well did they do their work (hat one of the grandest affairs of the season was witnessed at Moliers hall last Saturday night. Ail honor is due to the ladies for theiT euergy. Our schools opened on Monday, with Prof. Hodge, principal ; Mr. Logan, of PiercetoD, in the intermediate, and Miss Jennie McDouald in the primary departmeuts. Last spring a man was paid eight or ten dollars a month to cuff the little boys, who was not allowed to walk around the house without an usher, for fear of leaving the prints of their little bare feet ia the saud, aud Dow the rag weeds are taller all over tie school lot than any boy that attends scho I. Vaip consi-teccy Strafn.at a goat and swallow a camel. . There is a young man (ten or twelve years old) in town who can be seen hanging ou the shoemakers gate, making love to his little ‘Tiuxy duxy,” appearing as brave as Julius Ceaser, J)gt wheu.be goeJ to Sabbath school he peeps in at the door and then he tuns away. We recommend a dose of soothing syrup. Simon.

G- AVELTCN. Business quite lively. Another family moved to town. M. T. Brumbaugh has purchased a fine horse. D. C. Brumbaugh has received a large stock of boots and shoes, whiob he is selling very cheap. . ~ ■ O.K. —The following is a portion of a letter from Goshen to the Wat saw Indianaian: “Ou Friday afternoon the bulletin boards of this city bore the following- “ Died —James Drake, of this city. He leaves a wife and four childred,” But the bulletin boards were a head of time. Drake did cot die until after 12 o’clock Friday night. Drake died of delirium tremens ! Score one more for rum 1 Just think of it; in less than ten days’ time, in a city of less than 6,000 inhabitants, King Alcohol has been the means of throwing upon the world ten orphans and three widows 1 What a tc mperance ieeture this is. It ought to strike ter ror to the hearts of those who pass the vile stuff over the counter, and cause them to quit the accursed business. It ought to inspire the true friend ot the temperance cause more and more to the realization of the sense of they duty the owe to the community and the enormous amount of work they have before them, . A recent ruliug of the,, supreme court in regard to per centage to be paid to county treasurers for the collection of delinquent taxes is likely to prove quite expensive to the state. It is estimated that the county treasurers will receive IB per ceDtages between $50,000 and $60,000" additional as the result of the decision, the effects which are just becoming apparent The supreme court gave its decision upon an agreed case, and ruled that county treasurers are entitled to 5 per cent, for tbe collection of all delinquent taxes as far back as August 1875. This was in conformity with the act passed in that year, which was the only act referred to in the submitted case. It is the opinion of gentlemeu well versed iD the laws relating to county officers that the provisions ot the act of 1872 are of a precisely similar that if some enter prising county treasurer chooses to test the question another decision will be given by the supreme court authorizing the payment of the additional per centage as far back as 1872. Indianapolis Journal. —Vast numbers of obnoxious and poisonous weeds infest our thoroughfares and principal streets much to the annoyance of the citizens and which must be distastful to all strangers entering our town. Would it not be well tor the town board to iustruot the Marshal to see to it that eaoh property owner remove suoh from tbe premises within the corporation, or at least on our main streets. If not, why a corporation, and why pay officers if out for public bt titfii.— Brni.nl banner.

—On Friday evening las', as tw" or three young ladies of this place were returning from * the performance if Pinafore at the - opera house, and when just north of the M. E. church hey were -et upon by some fiend, who seized one of them around the waist, The scream# of the young lady soon brought assistance, but the rascal, whoever he was, made his esoape by running through! the alley immediately in the rear of the Danner house. It is high time th t- some thing is done to put a stop to this sort of villainy, as this is the third or fourth attempt of the kind that has came to our notice within a short time. We have withheld the name ot the young lady, through motives ot delicacy, but a lady eorrespoudeot ex presses her views pretty freely in today's paper, and we refer the reader to bet remarks upon the subject. — India niun. —: — s , —Under the provisions of the new game law, it is unlawful to shoot quail between Jauuary Ist and November Ist; wild tutkeys, between Febiuary Ist and November Ist; prairie chick ens, between February Ist aud September Ist; woodcock, between Jauuary Ist and July Ist; wild duck between April 15th and September Ist; song birds can never lawfully be killed The law is very severe in its treatment of “pot hunters,” who tiap or net their birds; for every offense of this character a fine of not less than $lO or more than SIOO is assessed.
