elic |Mml * h. emrrii, wiwr.' THUKBPAY. MAY 8, 1879. PRESIDE NTtALC AND l- „ DA TEN If Dana, of the New York Sun, thinks he has found the coming mm. the dark horse for the Presidency, in John M. Palmer, of Illinois, necause he is a cooper by trade- and n marri and man-.with niue children and some grandchildren ; if the claim of his availability comes on his trade or chil dren the cooper that lives in ludima and has nineteen children and also a fair share of grandchildren, he should certainly receive a fair consideration, and his claims should not be overlooked on account of hie living in the State of Indiana. As Palmer's political record runs back to the Magoupiu courthouse ring”and the Chicago fire, and his political actions have not been very con
sistent, and office holdiug has rather warped his better judgment, he would not make y very strong leader now. And the Chicago Times comes to the conclusion that Senator David Davis, of Illinois, is the great mao to be placed in training for the nomination for the presidency. But thet>senator has been in traiuiog ever since he entered the senate as the, leader of the David Davis party, in the hope of landing hitnself in the white hou-e, thinking he could fill The chair better than any of his" predecessors. And the- Times concludes to make bim the soothingsyrup candidate of all the chronic political invalids in the country In the event of his nomination on that platform they should give Mrp. Winslow the second place on the ticket. And the Republicans are Clamoring that General Grant, of Illinois, be put in nomination again ; that it is essential to the welfare of the country to have a strong man at the head of the government. Grant is strong with such men as Babcock & Cos.; and they say that every thing is booming for Grant. Dut there is yet another man from Illinois that is named -as the one that may become the dark horse on the Republican track and walk away with the stakes, and that is the Hon. E. B. Washburn, who was Minister to France during President Grant's administration and therefore the Germans and French are all for Washburn. They certainly have been a very rematkable lucky family in politics, and no telling what may befall them yet. If Illinois keepe on at this rate if she can not be called the mother of Presidents, she will be entitled to the appellation of the mother of candidates. Yes, and Bill Springer and Bob Ingersoll live i here, and who can foretell the coming I vents of the political changes that oc- < ur in a very short period of time in this country. EDISON. In spite of the laughter, sneers and j ers of the outside gas world, Edison vat kept steadily at work, and no.' it is ..nnounced that he has successfully accomplished the feat of dividiug the leotric light. It is therefore no longer an experiment, but an assured success. It is estimated that the cost of the light per burner will be only a dollar per year. ■*> People who have groaned over the exaotions of gas companies can now rest easy. The new light is absolutely safe, easily controlled, and Perfectly adapted for any use. The Secret Service has come into possession of a counterfeit 820 United States legal tender note, which is calculated to deceive even persons accustomed to handling notes of that de- - nomination. What makes it more remarkable is the fact that the work on the oote is executed with a pen and ink. AH the intricate figures and curves, all the heads, the seal, the fiDe engraving work, and even the fibre in the paper, are almost perfectly counterfeited by pen and ink. , The signature ot JohD Allison, formerly Register of the Treasury, is almost cxaot, while that of John C. New, formerly Treasurer, is perfect. The whole bill, back and face, is a wonderful piece of pen work. The bill was detected at the Sub Treasury in New Orleans. A CLERICAL GEOWN. Bro. Alexander 1., the new Prince off Bulgaria, is only put up as a target. A first-class assassin will come along some fine day and pop the gentleman from Battenburg off his little throne.— Chicago News. Goshen, Ind., April 25,1879 Editor News,— Dear you allow a little space in your paper for an article touch ing our present system of education in this county, and more especially that of school grading, which as yet is not fully developed, oot for want of labor and effort bestowed by our worthy County Superintendent, but ou tho part of teachers who do not take pride in bringing up the schools in our rutal districts to the standard of perfection which it i* their privilege to Jo. The grade book is as essential to tho schoolroom as any text book used in it; we do not exaggerate', but simply utter the sentiments of every faithful, earnest teacher. I think we owe to Prof. Moury our heiirfy co-operation, and can only repay hiin in the arduous, work in which he has been engaged by manifesting our regard and appreciation of these services publicly. We, as teachers and friends of education, should be convinced, if DOtf already, that Prof. Moury’s services as Superintendent of the Elkhart county public schools can not be dispensed with, uu less we are willing to let tiie cause suffer by passing it into the hands of an inexperienced person, who knows nothing of the wants and labors connected with that office. Let our people see to it that Prof. Moury is retained, and thereby not only keep our under careful and proper management, but, with scarcely a dissenting voice, keep the right man in the right place.
