POETRY.

THE SOLITARY TOMB. BY BERNARD BARTON. N'ot a leaf of the tree, which stood near rv.e was stirr'd, Though a breath might have mo'd it so lightly. Nut a farewell note from a sweet singing bird. Bade adieu to tbe sun setting brightly. Tue sky vras cloudlrss ami calm, except In the west where the sun was descending; And there 'the rich tints of the rainbow hhpt, As his beams with their beauty were blending. And the evening star, is raJ ?0 clear. So tremulous, soft, and tender, Had lit up its lamp, and shutdown from its ipliero Its dewey, delightful splendor. A' d I stood all alone, on that gentle hill, Wiih a landscape jo loveh befoie tm: And its spirit and tone, so serene and still. Seemed silently gathciing o'tr me. Far otTwa the Drbcu, w!mio briny flood IJy its winding banks w isswei ping; And just at tho foot of the hill where I stood .

The bodr may be bound with chains, but it is not in the power of mill to confine the soul: spurning the leitei-H of the oppressor, it ranges unchreked and uneonirolho!: it soars on the pinions of freedom and immortality. The 'i ofinenient of the body, whi.'e the spirit i at liberty , prndiics a senition more v ruble to the imagination than that of a separation by the band of death-

The citizens of the United States pride themselves in the enjoyment of their liberty, and glory in the excellence of their political institutions. Every anniversry of the birth-day of their independence is announced by the roar of cannon anil rausijuetry, the rattling of the drum and the shrill sound of the fife: but what must be our feedings when se reflect that notwithstanding, the morning dawns upon a million and a half of the children of Africa, who are doemed to the most ignominious bondage, and are pinining in the most wretched slavery , exposed to the lash of the pitiless and unrelenting task master in this land of freedom! It would seem as if these bursts of joyful emotion were calculated, inertly, to drown the cries and lamentations of the oppressed; and that the most arrant hypocricy is made the standard of virtue. Gracious God! what a creature is man ! ! VERTAS.
