The abore report after being carefully examined by the Board is found to be correct, and the fame is hereby approred; and the clerk is ordered to hare tee same published lor two weck succtssi rely. M. ff. RICE, President. A. C. CAPRON, Clerk." It would haTe been a great deal more satisfactory had the report been a little more '.pecifie in eome respects. For instance, we should like to know, and other tax payers would also, we imagin, how much the leaky cistern that will bold no water, cost; or rather will not held mare than 12 or 14 inches depth of water, and which comes in from the bottom. We tried to fial out from the abore report how much it cost but could not with any certainty. The nearest approximation wc can make to it it that the Fire Department, Cistern and Engine, including the $2,500 paid on the bonds issued for the purchase of the Engine, coat $1,135 37, or, $1,635 37 for Cistern and Fire Department. We presume it will be stfa to sy that the Cistern has cost already $1,000! and equally safe to say that will require a f rther outlay ejf at lent $509 to make It useful, or answer he purpose for which it was designed. The idea of the Engine Conpin tiling the Cistern with water is amusiag to tLiolt of. The members may rjss!brj Co Tt once, but the second time nerer, consequently pipes will hare to te laid so that it erill fill from the surroundii bvildings, otherwise it will be found empty when needed. But to return to the report.' We should also been pleased to know exictly how much the officers of the Cor poratioc cost the people, and how much we had to pay to keep the wind in the sickly Democratic organ across the way. IIa 1 it been a little more specific in these respects it would bare been much en we satisfactory to the tax-payers. It is true it would feaee cost a few dollars more, but their organ doubtless needs it, at least it sight bare enable it to sake a more respectable showing ia its report next year of its income. According to its rates for inserting legal adrertising it will charge a15 at least for publishing the abore twice; which is double what it ought te be if its circulation were double what it is. Congressional Convention. Some of the Republican papers in this District Vave spoken about the propriety of detirmining upon the time and place of holding the next Republican Congressional eonrention. We hare conferred with seme of our friends here, and ai to the time all seemed to thiuk the last of June or first of July would be soon enough. Ia regard to the place, all agreed that Wanatah was the moat central and the most accessible to the entire District of any Olk er point. The accoutre Ittioas at Wanatah are ample They hare two, if not three jrsol hotels, and a large warehouse which the Conreotion caa oceopy if necessary. Wanatah will accommodate Fulton, Marshall, Stark, Porter, Lake, ani all the eouatlei south of them much better thaa any point north, east or west of there, aal would be nearly ai convenient to St. Joseph aal La Porte as Westrllle, the only other point as yet mentioned. Universal Saflrafe In the Territories. A bill passed the House Tuesday, amending the oi ganie law of the Territories of Nebraska, Colorado, Dakotah, Montana, Washoe,' Idaho, Arazojia.Utah and New Mexico. It contains one sectien of general interest, and of special significance , which mt agreeJ to bj a rote of 70 to 2C, tnJ ii as follows: . . "SrcnoM 9. .Iii b it further enacted. That within the Territories aforesaid there shall be no denial of the elective franchise to citizens of the Unitexl States because of race or color, and all persons shall be equal before the Uw, and all acts or parts of aats. irher of Congrass or the Legislative Assemblies of the Territoriee aforesaid, Inconsistent with this provision are hereby declared null and void." - Jeff Daria has been indicted for treason in the U. 3. District Coert of Virginia, at Norfolk, and will be tried, it is said, at the present term. We predict his aequittaL The object of trying him by a jury of semi-secessionists, the only kind that will be accepted by the defense, is to acquit him. The President has vetoed tl.a bill admitting Colrata into the Union. " Convicted. The La Porte Herald of Saturday sirs: A. II. Sheldon, of thai place, has been tried bv the U. S. Court, and sentenced to ten years confinement in the PeDi;ntUry for robbing the nnil.
Trouble In the Democratic Camp. The last Democrat, ij somo comments upon the result of the recent Corporation election in this place, thus alludes to a couple of rebellious subjects of the great Plymouth Democratic Tycoon: "Another feature in the router was the attempt on the part of one or two democrat, who had
been looked up to as leaders in the oartr. to throw firebrands into the norain ilin Convention on Sat urday and to create dissitiafactioa with the nomi nees. We regret that this atten.pt was to some extent successful, and the (lUorgantef r hare the ! . r . r .i . . . usiactiun oi -xnowing mat iney nre uone ai they could for 'the success of republicanism and the overthrow of democracy in this plaee. What their friends In' the country will 'think of their de mocracy we ere' not adrift!. ?but of this we are sure, democrat here eitimite Such democracy at it true value? It is understood that tl.e above shot was aimed at Hon M. A. O. Packard and another individual not quite so prominent at present, who happened to be standing in line with him. Mr. P. was so unfortunate as to fall under the displeasure of the great Plrmoullt Democratic Tycoon and Lis body guard, Osborne, Van and tho Court-bouse clique, a couple of years ago, because he thought proper to opposo Trax n'e nomination for Congress, and his death was immediately determined on, we un derstand. Whether the Tycoon sent hin word to i'isembowcl himself, we are not advised, but certain it if, be has not occupied any prominent po litical position since, and from the lotrsnations in the abore extract, we gness the Tycoon has issued the order for his decapitation. We are not caring a bit; bat we are a little surprised at the meekness with wh'ch Mr. P. submits to his fate. It may be he thinks it would be folly or madness to contend agaiitst such odds, but m nj a ma in his situation would, like Fitz Jaraes, cry: "Come one, come all, fine rock shall fly, From its firm base, as soon as I." Tycoon, we think, is a little apprehensive of a mutiny on the part of Mr. P. and his friends against his assumed authority in the party .hence has been trying to giro P. away to the Republicans; but the Republicans notbeIivin in .cither black or white slavery, or slavery of any kind, hare not felt disposed to recognize Tycoon's asjumed ownership of Mr. P. and the Democratic party of Marshall. When Mr. P. wishes to leare the bogns Democratic party and jin the great pirty of liberty, equality, justice and progress, he will fi id no one so narrow minded as to attempt to prevent Lim from working out his political salvation. Whatever perjona! fvilu Mr. P. mnj have ihey would soon be correcteJ by association with better men. Dot whatever course in this respect Mr. P.'s conrictions mir determine him to purnu.', be Ins the ability to make Tycoon and his prims Minister O shorn e , tremble in their boots whencrar he determines to do so. Doubtless all that his prevented him from turning upon his tormentors, ere this, has been the desire to preserve the haroaiay of tlie party. JetT Davisj nnd Wife. A Washington letter of a Phila lelphia paper, written as is understood by one of the attaches of oae of the Presidential organs atWaghiagton.con- ( tsins the following paragraph under date of the 9th, with reference to Mrs. Davis, and. evidence against her husband of complicity ia the assisination of Mr. Lincoln: "A gentleman who has read this evidente informs me that it did not con tain a single fact that would hare been thought sufficient by the President or any other fair minded man to order the trial sought. It is understood that Mrs. Davis is cow to remain with her husband till bis fate is decided one way or the other. She is said to be in possession of ample means which will enable her to remain at the Fortress without being an additional burden upon the Government." Confirmations. The Senatein executive stsion on the 10th, confirmed the nomination of Mr. S rauhe as Collector of New York, as well as that of Gen. Knipe as Postmaster at Ilarrisburg. No serious opposition was made to either, and the confirmation of each was made without a yea and nay vote. Acquitted. Col. Jacques, who was accused of causing the death of a Mrs. Williams last winter at Louisville, Ky.. bj procuring an abortion, was tried the past week and acquilteiby the jury without leaving their ?atsIn the esse of Dr. Newland, who murdered Madison Erans at Bedford, a few weeks since, the case having been removed to Floyd county, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty, after aa absence of about three hour. FllO.lI TLWKSSEC. NaüWTiLLK, Tenn , April 10. 1SCC. Eorroa Reitblica!. I hope 1 will not be considered meddlesome or out of place, in addressing yo J and yonr readers on the present deplorable conditi:- of the country; for surely the present state afT.ir: one to be deplored by ercrr honest and true counter loving citizen of the Republic or at least it appears so to your correspondent Now, after four years of the bloodiest war of modern times, and its termination, by t'ie snppression of the most gigantic rebellion of which history bears any record, and when the people, aal the world expect pence in all its beauty and loveliness to reign all over this broad contiacnt, we have, in in scead, janglinf, d ii rl and confusion to a fearful extent. The malcontents, both north and south, begin to blow their horns alresb.and are striving with all their power to kindle anew, the old flames, that so recently plunged the country Into Jibloodr war. Treason is counged by those in the northern Ptaie, Tho during .W3 were too base cowards to lift their hands to aul for the principles they so much cherished, that principle which led men to attempt the destruction of the government of the United States. Returning traitors are received with open arrai and warm hearts; large bodies ol men collect to receive them and congratalate thera on thsir return from exile or prison with fife and limo, and to express to them their extreme gratitude for the efforts they hare made to destroy their own zorernment, desolate their own homes, and murder their own neighbors; I refer now to the mob, yes the mob that assembled a short time ago at Huntington to celebrate the escape of the arch Fiend the dark and damnable traitor, L. P. Milügan-, Oh shame, shame on a lot of men who will giro any countenance to a man that led as deep a laid scheme of destruction and murder as he did. He is too mean, degraded and low to lire, and too contemptible to die. He ie a disgrace to his mother, an abomination to evervthing that's pure and holy. But no doubt his came will' be flung before the publie for office at the first opportunity. Oh what has Indiana been doing? Has she been lulled into a sound sleep by the dieing echoes of the aitillery that so lately reverberated through the land, that she has not made a law to disfranchise such men, and also the draft skedaddler? Look at the little state of Tennessee: although her inhabitants are principally of the rebellious stripe, thank God, there are enough true and loyal men in the Stato to mike laws prohibiting the late rebels from Voiding office or having any say as to whoahall. Noble Band. Their names shall be inscribed on the highest pinnacles of fame, and their memories shall go down to future generations and revered by all true lovers of liberty and Christianity. Hal she not let a noble exsmple for oar more loyal northern states? Would not the whole country be benefited tf every state would follow the' examnle with regard to traitors and draft akedaddlers? The Tenuesaeo franchise law in itself is a noble document. It is true that it seems bard for a man to be deprived of his rote, but then it Is just under the present circumstaaCCS One Rebel soldier has been found who ac knowledges the law to be a just one. He said to a fellow passenger on the R.R. "I don't blame the Legislature for passing the law, for if we had won the fight, we would hare allowed no Union man to rote, and I am not disposed to find fault with them for serving me as I had fullr determined to lerre them, had circumstances put the power in my hsnd instead of theirs.V Very few men in Tennessee are willing to look at both, sides of the question in so just and candid a manner, but seem to think they should go wholly unpunished without regard to the nature and extent of their crime, and as a ger.ertl thing they are very elaraoro is in denouncing the franchise law. I hetrd
one man say to another to-day, "you are now like the Irish mau's jackass; you can holler but yon ean't rote.' The Republican Banner of the 4th inst , is out in a ''gol buster" which it commences in the following mild (!) language: "At fifteen
miautcs before etern o'clock yesterday morning mark the day, the hour and the minute with a black stone the Senate of Tennessee completed the deep damnation of legislative infam f, began in the House ol Representatives, by th passage of the Franchise bill." Such is the Malignant spirit with which the true, patriotic, Uu'on loving people of the South are hated. Such ie the spirit that is fanned and encourazed by the Northern Copperheads, who would glory in seeing it kindled into another rebellion to bring war aal bloodshed upon the couutry. Yours Truly, HOOSIER. FR03I SJkX Fill CISCO. Capture of a Fort ly Indiana Tlio Garrison Massacred. Sa FtAxcisca, May C. A special messenger arrived yesterday at Los Anjrelos, bringing a ie patch from the commander of Fort Grant, to Gen. Mason, announcing that Fort -Gjodwin, Arizona, had been Liken bv 2,093 Indians, aad the garrisoo. numbering l.'I persons, ratssacree, with one ex ception, and the fort be mod. The man who escaped was out bunting at the time, and witnessed the comraotiea from a distance. He saw the fort burning and hear ! the firi.ig of guns during the f ght, which lasted nearly an hour. It is supposed the Inauns gained admission to the fori under th pretext of entering into a treaty of peace which General Msson had instructed the commaaJer of the fort toKukc. Senator Sherman, of Ohio, has introduced a ban bill into the Senate, whieh is attracting general approbation. It provides for the consolidation of the entire public debt of tho United States into five per cent bonds, running thirty years, principal aad interest payable in coin. It also provides Is at the amount of interest saved by the substitution of fire for six per cent, shall bo applied to the payment of the principal of the debt. And in lieu oi he sinking fund proT ded for by the act ot February 25, 1?G2. at lit 30,Ou3,9W, including the savings of interest, shall be anu;"r appropriated to the payment of the prirxipal of the riaiivSat debt. The New York Evening Post calculates that the annual earing at interest, which would be afiMcted by a change from six per rent, to fire per cent would give us a sinking find, which would pay oft the whole ol oar National debt in thirty-six and a hal years. The law provide! that these five percent, bonds must be negotiated at par, and in order to render this certain, it is provided thai these bonds ehall be exempt from all msnner of taxation. Federal as well as State and municipal. Americnn Mnnufaclarea the American Watch Co. of Wnltham, Mass. Every one knows that the mechanism of the best manufactories of this country is unequalled in any other part of the world. The genius of American mechanics produced the cotton-gin, the mechanical reaper and mower, the sewing machine, and lat but not least, the wonderful machinery of the American Watch Company of Waltham. This Company was established in 150, and has grown in proportions which entitle it to a first rank among the manufacturing enterprises of the New World. -. It employs bet a-een 903 and 1,000 artlzans of superior skill and character, and a large and thriving town has grown op in its r'ninity. The factory covers over three acres of ground, and as aa Illustration of its extent, we may mention that ills supplied with more thnC0 miles of iron pipes and p.-oduces an airarregate of nearly 75.000 watches per annum. The founders of this Company believed that the same delicate mechXnical processes which had produced such remarkably perfect results in larger machines, might be applied with even rreater advantages to the production of the watch. The foreigo time-pieces are made principally by hand, and except when of high eost, an imperfeet article, often out of repair, and of little value is the result. Abroad, these mysterious and infinitesimal organs which, when aggregated, produce the watch, are the fruit of slow and toilsome manu al processes. In the results, there must of course be lack of that perfect uniformity' which is indispensable for correct time-keeping. The constituent parts of the American watch, on the other band, are fashioned by the most delioate and accurate machinery. Wheels, pinions; springe. Screws, absolutely uniform in weight, circumference, dimensions, and' in ersry possible particular, are turned out In myriads by unerring fingers of steel, and their proper oombination and. adjustment by skilful workmen hare glveu the Company its high reputation.
