Machine FoetTj! Sota years ilnce there was published in our town paper a half column of rhyme-called machine poesr," a few linos of which ran somewhat after this style: "Come to the 'Regulator. that popular Store, Where the LaBS and Dd&ieti ware cool ia tVe doer. RirriLiCA: Thinking that some faita relatire to this far-famed town weald be intereJtinr to your readers. I have eoncraded to write a

short acc unt of the place. Yoü can publish as much or as little of it as suits your pleasure and convenience. Oberlin, as you are doubtless aware, was, until the breaking out of the late rebellion, the chief station oe the "underground railway" in Ohio. Here, a he re all other places in the North, "the pafrtinu fugitive from !arery might stand snd proclaim himself rate- But the necessity for such a station has disappeared with the great evil which it was designed to combat, and Oberlin's occuptlion, like Othello's, is gone so fr as assisting fugitives is concerned. The inhabitants are a Godfearing, libertr-brinff people, loyal to the core. On Sund.iy 1 attended the Sabbath school at the College chapel. According to the Secretary's report, there were present 6)J persons. I was rery well pleased with the arrangement of the order of the services, and think that it will comp ire favorably with the Plymouth SnnJay Schools. I attended meeting the same morning at the First Congregational Church. Although the town is but little larger thit Plymouth, yet there were as many present that morning at usually see the inside oi a Church in the course of a month in your town. The place hts few natural adrantagei, and were it not for its superior educational privileges. Oberberiiii would probably lure never gained dimensions sufficient t vecure U a place on the m ip oi the country. There are two good Collsgvs here; one is scieiitil; and classical, the other is a commercial institution. Ttie first named i under the patron tge ol the CongregatioHAl Church, and is attended by both ladies an! gentlemen. About WO students are now in attendance, and a finer looking, more intelligent and orderly assemblage of young persona is seldom seen anywhere. The College buildings, of which there are four, are all creditable edifices, especially the ladies' boirding hall, which is a msgnilicent s'ructure deserving of more th in a pv-ing n Uco. It is built of brick, and ost ab ut $15.0)3. It is divided into apartments, and accommodate alout one hundred and sevftitv with lo.lin ' betides a Urze iium1)' of olher ladies with table baud. Taking it altorhe,,;, j, Ä ..jOT forever" "a thing of beauty." You rau,t not accuse me ol going iuto ecstaciet speaking of the building, simply for the rpaeon that the latlies occupy it. Oh, no. But J might.if "one bright, particular star." whom 1 could mention, oc-unie I a room therein, sin; prais es iince-tsing. But I will desist. The Commercial College, which is under the direction ol Mars. Calkins, GriH:i & Co., h.n a1wut 411 ri lent now in attendanc-. It is, in my humor; judgment, one of the mist thorough institutions in the country. Although its ftme is not s wide spread as some others, yet it is destined to become in a few years the leading college in the West. Students attending it are not allowed to use tobacco in any shape in or about the institution or on the streets. . Profane Isnguage is also prohibited . For a violation of either one of these rules, a s'.udent is suspended, and unless ho repents ia stckeloth and ashts, is expelled. There is but one htel in the place, and thit is kept in a style better s lited to the last century than to this age of progression. Almost every family in the place keep b arders. There is njt a saloon nor a billitrd tible in the place, akh several attempts h iv bien m ide to establish stieh in stitutions here. This fact speak weil for the to srn. Allow m to siy a few w rl in reference tj the colored people of Oberlin, w!j are qu'te numerous. They are, so ftr as my ohsereati extends, an industrious, orderly and rtfliciju el iss. M sl of them are fair schoUrs. M ny are in com'ortable circuintnce. and not a lew are wealthy.
