The propriety of building a Harbor at Michigan City has been, within the past few months, considerably discussed, and quite a number of our exchanges hare en U red upon the advocacy of this very commendable eutei prise. We understand that the Legislature, last winter, passed a bill itf oorporating a company and clothing it with power to proceed with the work. It is time that Indiana should h.vc an outlet for her Commerce by way of the Lake. Heretofore our resources have been divided, and the wealth of our prop! principally directed to isedins Chicago, which, for twenty years, his acted like a rast sponre in sucking up the profits derived from the commerce of this and other Strtea The position of our people i somewhat unfortunate. On tha South wa are tapped by Loaisville, od the East by Cincinnati and Toledo, and on the West, by that miracle of modern times, Chicago. We have no commercial centre. With the exception of what is freighted on the Ohio River, all our goods and products are carried by railway, and the farmer! and merchants compelled to pay such tarrifia aa the carriers ace fit to impose. In addition to this, the ability of tha Railroad to accommodate the constantly growing commerce, is exciting some debate. That a Har - bor would be of unmistakable advantage to the State, all will admit; that our necessitie. will induce iü construction, we hare no doubt We see, by our late excnaugei, ui ruunsir oeiu niaue to build a Rail Road direct from Lafarette to Chi cago. , lf this should succeed, the New Albany, & Louisville Road would die for want of blood. To obviate this, wo are creditably informed that the latter road proposes to pire Oac Hundred Thouiand Dollars toward opening a-Harlior at Michigan City. With this sum in hand, it will not require any great effort to raise the balance neceaBary to complete the woik;and'Once undertaken, the dar will not ba distant when tha Government ! will extend some help. That a Harbor can be built at Michigan City, has been affirmed by. such men aaAien. Uelaheld, Col. A Murlreeiborocorresp ndent ol the .Milwaukee Wisconsin relates the following. Amon the former nuguatcs and lite leaders ot I'm rcbeUIt, who hare returned to eat their leek, is General Gideon J. Pillow. 1 visited him last week at hi. mansion, five miles froniCoiumbia. The foVndid estate nn which hi mansion is built i leased out by the Government to an entcrpriaiii Yankee. The familj of the General have, however, been allowed to use the house and adjoining grounds. The place is au cleguit on-, like some English COuntrT seat. After leavin: the pike to t-nwr the carriage way upon the groun ls, you ritlt a considerable distance tVrough a most betutiful crove and lawn liefore you get a glimpse of the residence. General Pillow greeted h very affibly. and is fjuiio communicative, indeed exceedingly talkative. He appears about fifty rears of agehad on a gray coat, which I judged to be bis uniform. Stripped of its Insignia and Rtlt buttons not by any means a ruin of imposing rxterior, but would pas for an intelligent and genial farmer of the old school. Toe Genend expresses himself as utterly iubjugateJ, hut I should also judge bj no means repentant. He talk in substance, if notln exact words, like this: "We are eonquerred; you Yankxatsjjue our masters; wegire it up; we are at your mercy; we only ask a chance now to get a living for our families, and we ask it as a favor; we hare got through with the fight, and though the Sou h didn't make as good a fight as ehe could have done, aüll it ia over now. and we want peace." I asked him if, considering us, as he said, as their mästen, how it would be in case of a war with England or France. Perhaps he would prefer to change masters? The Genera! hesitated, but finally iaid that that . would depend on the course taken by the government with their property. I concluded that the loyaltr of tho General "wouldn't do to bet on" ret. The General says be isn't guilty of treason. He is willing to bo tried by a jury of our Generals, except that General Curtis must not bo on it. Ho couldn't trut him. I The flag of the Union wares.
