Written for the Marshall Co. Republican. J Marshall County. -Its Early History. BY WARRKX TAYLOR. CHAPTER V. At an election for county officers held in August, 1H3P, Patrick Logan was chosen Sheriff, and Thom

It will be e 11 1h.1t ( enter township, withitin the space of two yer.rs, more than doubled her vote. The summer and fall of 183, will long be remembered as the sickly season. The spring of that year was very wet, cold and backward. About the first of June when the marshes were filled with water, the weather became dry and oppressively hot. Cases of sickness began to appear about the first of July, and the number of these rapidly increased as the season advanced. Entire families were prostrated. So far as I can judge, not one person out of fifty was perfectly well. As this sickness was so universal, many suffered for want of proper attention. The most common disease was the fever and ague, but other and more violent forms of fever were also prevalent. Several of our early settlers died during this season, among whom vere E. B. Hobson, Oliver Rose, Ju liua Hutchinson, Hugh Galbrailh, Simeon Tin lor, Jacob Shoemaker, Pierson, and undoubtedly others, widi whom I was unacquainted. This sickness, seriously checked the growth of our countv for several ve.tr. M my became discouraged and left for other parts, as soon as their health and cire imdances would permit. THE AMERICAN MOatBB, Consisting of a pre.it rarietyof unique and beantiful pitterns efCiar Tubes; also, several varieties of Plp Tahaa. The peculiarity about these articles is that e ich one is arranged so as to receive a damp sponge, tlirou-h which the smoke of the burning Cigar or Tob.ucc hm tO pas in itsj way to the mouth. Th'i3 damp sponge not onlr cools the : smoke, hut extracts from it the nicotine oil, the j poisonous property of the Tobacco, which renders ! the breath less offensiv. Smokers will find in the use of these Tabes a luxury never before attained except by Bains the Turkish water-jar. Their use : will greatly promote the health of the habitual aoker and preserve the sweetness of the breath. THE AMERICAN CARPrTT HOOK, i I? a little contrivance for putting down carpets I without tacks. This is a new article, which hat j npverbcf ire been upon the market. Rut it possesses I. i the merit of enabling a person to put down or take i up a cirpet of the largest size in geieral nse in if- : teen minutes, without any injurv to the floor or carpci. ii is cry cneap encuper in uie long run than tacks and the great ficility with which even a servant can take up and put down carpets, without the possibility of a mistake, renders it invaluable to the housekeeper.
