Fkiday, July V. VJOl. LOCAL BREVITIES. From Tuesday' Daily. Mr. and Mr. John Dixon, of outh liend, are the guests of relatives in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Kich went to Columbia City today to spend a few weeks with relatives. Misses Lula Helpman, Dollie Lonp and Ethel Yockey spent the afternoon at Lake Maxinkuckee. Presiding Elder Dale, of Elkhart, attended the quarterly conference held at the Methodist church last evening. The ladies of the M. E. church were entertained this afternoon by Mrs. J. A. Palmer, at her home on North Center street. Emory beider, of West township, has returned from his visit in Indian territory and says he is quite well pleased with the country. MUs Crace Hell, of South Ilend, was tbb guest of relatives in this city this noon on her way to Valparaiso via the Pennsylvania line. The Presbyterian picnic will be held at Winona lake on Thursday, August 22, giving the picnickers a chance to spend a day at the Winona assembly. ( S. Cleavland and eon Arnie, and their families, accompanied by their guest, Arthur Mortland, of Edgerton, 0., went into camp at Pretty lake today. J. N. Wilson and family are now in camp in their cottage, "Idle Hour," on the south bank of Pretty lake. They expect to spend several weeks at the lake. The long needed rain came this atternoon and was welcomed by everybody. The corn would have been completely gone in a few dayB and pasture u very brown. J. L. Helpman and daughter, Nellie, went to bourbon this morning to visit Mr. ilelpman's father a few days be fore returning to their home in Louisiana. They expect to start home next Monday. The Independent is glad to note that Chas. Kellison and others have waved their right to remnnetrate. They have been contending for a forty loot pave meat which the council will grant, as the street really ought to be that width. From Wednesday's Daily. W. V. Tascher and wife, of Miehawaka, are the guests of relatives in this city. Miss Nettie Slough, of IJourbon, was the guest of Mr. and Mre. A E. Rhodes today. Focock, of Lima, ()., a lircman on the Lake Erie & Western raiiroad, arrived in this city today to spend a few weeks' vacation with relatives and friends. He will also visit in Argos and Hourbon. Wolford went to Chicago yesterday and bought a carload of young steers to place on his farm. He went over today to buy another car load. The ladles of the Methodist church are potting down a new carpet on the church room floor today. The spirit of Improvement has struck the residents of South Michigan street and they are having the alleys back of their properties cleaned up. Several
stock farms in that neighborhood will be removed and taken to the country where they belong. Miss Ilona Davis has returned to her home in Hourbon, after a few weeks'
visit in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Mrtss Foot, of Chicago, is the guest of Misses Laura and Carrie Reeves at their home on South Michigan street. There will be preaching by the pastor at the Culver M. E. church next Sun day at II a. ni. and at Poplar drove, at S p. m. Walter, the 11 -year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Williams, residing north of this city, had his arm broken a few days ago by falling olT a load of hay. Klingerman and son returned to their home in Fairfield, la., after attending the funeral of Mr. Klingerman's father, which occurred at Hourbon last Tuesday. Adolph Mayer, of New York, is the guest of his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Sigmund Mayer, of this city. Milton and Edwin, of Chicago, and Solomon, of Spokane, Wash., will spend Sunday with them.
