CHASE FOR A DEBT.

To Collect Bill a Woman Follows a Ma a 10,000 Mile. All the Tvay from Honolulu to Cleveland, more than 10,000 miles, Mrs. SybH Cooper followed the man who owed hftr a larse sum of money, and then, when she found him here, discovered she had left in Honolulu the documentary evidence of the debt, says a recent dispatch from Cleveland, Ohio. "While waiting for the papers to arrive the man left for New York, but Mrs. Cooper is still after him. In New York ate hopes to overhaul him and get the case started in the courts. Mrs. Cooper once lived in New York, but years ago went to Honolulu with her husband, and both are now wealthy. In making Investments Mrs. Cooper loaned a large sum of money to a Cleveland man, who forgot to pay her when he left the Island. She decided to follow him. From Honolulu she went to San Francisco, then to Salt Late City, to Denver, to Kansas City, St. Loui3 and Cincinnati. With her brother, from New York, Mrs. Cooper located the nan in an apartment house in this city, but could do nothing without the vidence. She refuses to give the man's came.

HALF DEAD SOLDIER. Return All Itroken ITp to Ills Homo Id South Dakota. Bristol. So. Dak., Feb. ISth, 1901. (Special.) Peter Behres says: "When I returned from the war I found that I was in a very critical condition. My system was all run down, and I gradually became worse, until I wa3 half dead with Kidney and Bladder Trouble. My family wanted me to consult a physician, but as I had learned through several of my comrades of the wonderful cures of Dodd's Kidney Pills I determined to give them a trial first." Mr. Den res. or Capt. Denies as he should be called, because he was captain of the l;t Minnesota Cavalry, and In 1S2 wa? for fourteen months in continual service in warfare with the Indians. now an honored member or the G. A. R., who has reached the ripe old age of three score years and teu. He continues: "I am now an old soldier, seventy years of age, aud enjoying almost perfect health, and all thanks for this is due to Dodd's Kidney Pills. I found after having used the first few boxes that my faith was not misplaced in them, and in a very short while my kidneys were doing the work required of them and the bladder trouble was soon eliminated. It was almost a year before I was myself, but during that time I used Dodd's Kidney Pills faithfully and with the very best results that anyone could wish for. I would not have been without them for a king's ransom. I am now well as any man of my age. 5öc a box, six boxes for $2.30. Buy them from your local dealer if you can. now Bachelor Relative rail m Smsrt Young Father Hark. The conventional piece of plate witu which the baby at its baptism is usually dowered was a few months back bestowed upon the infant son of a Liverpoolian in the shape of a quart tankard embellished with an Inscription to the effect that, as doubtless the recipient would in due course inherit the bibulous propensity of his sire, the accompanying gift would undoubtedly, unlike most christening presents, prove useful. The aforesaid sire, however, took the matter in ill part and there is now a coolness between the parties. It was geniality that prompted the action of a certain gourmet who, Dn the occasion of his godchild's baptism, presented him with a thin volume, elegantly bound in morocco, containing a number of his favorite recipes, which he had caused to be printed for this special purpose, with the remark that one could not begin too young to study and practice the niceties of the culinary art, says Tit-Bits. As, however, this strange gift was accompanied by a very handsome check, the parents smiled gracious approval upon the eccentric bon vivant. When you are seeking a sponsor for your child don't select one with a hobby. Such is the opinion, formed from sad experience, of a Devonshire father, who a few years back rashly asked his cousin, an enthusiastic naturalist, just returned from the east, to act in that capacity. In due course his relative arrived, and with him, as a gift for his godchild, a large box containing a carefully selected sample of venomous reptiles! At once a general stampede took place, the father alone screwing up sufficient courage to remain and reproach his cousin, who, after a somewhat stormy scene.left the house with his present. At a conjuring entertainment given for the benefit of his family and friends a Mr. Z was immensely jocular and witty at the expense of an elderly bachelor relation, from whose hat he produced a heterogeneous assortment of articles. Two years later Mr. Z asked the same relation to stand godfather to his infant daughter. The relation consented, but what was the fond father's chagrin when ha produced, not only the costly gift that was expected of him, but the very hat which two winters back had been, in the hands of the amateur conjurer, a veritable cornucopia, remarking at the same time that, as he really did not know what to give, he thought he had better hand over the wonder-working hat to the father, and let him make his own selection therefrom. And with a chuckle he left the house.

THE NEWEST WOMAN.

Slltrht'Il' Generosity to Aberdeen. Sir. Charles W. Mitchell, whose offer to be rc-spon? i!Ie for the whole of the debt on the Aberdeen university buildings, to the extent of C 20.000, has been announced, is a singularly unostentatious man. He spends the fortune made in the great business of Armstrong, Mitehell & Co. in doing good quietly, and in financing artistic and educational experiments, some of which are almost Quixotic in their freedom from the commercial element. One excellent institution which he has recently started, and which is being worked under his personal superintendence, is the Handicrafts' Company, intended to instruct and assist artistic craftsmen and mechanics. Mr. Mitchell Is a well-known artist, whose "Hyjntia" was one of the paintings of the year in the (Irosvenor Galley of 1SS3.

Usef ulii of Megaphones. Megaphones are by no means a "foolish" instrument. They are, in fact, capable of great practical use. and will doubtless be so recognized in the near future. On the water, shore or in any open country where there are no obstructions and no local sounds to interfere, one may talk through a megaphone and be distinctly heard for over a mile, while a loud call can be heard through this instrument for at least two miles.

Manufacturing Sign! Flu:;. One of the busiest industries in England just now is that of the manufacture of signal flags. On Jan. 1 next the mercantile marine will be obliged to adopt the revised system of the international code of Hag signaling, and each vessel will need ten new Hags. As England and her colonies have nearly 11,000 vessels in this category, a prodigious amount of preliminary work in bunting is made necessary.

Iba Blacksmith Girl of Uauaaa Is the Latest Specimen. Esther Searle of Cawker City, Kas.. is the latest specimen of the new woman. During the two months that her brother was absent Miss Searle took his place in the blacksmith shop with her father. Esther was determined that her father should suffer no inconvenience from the absence of her brother. In consequence she taok hold of whatever there was to do with a heartiness and vim which astonished everyone. Her prowess at the anvil became the common theme of conversation in the vicinity. The Searle smithy became the rendezvous for those who had heard of the girl blacksmith's fame, and curious people from far and wide drifted into the little city to see the prodigy for themselves. Miss Searle seemed to be unconscious that she was the object of so much attention and continued her duties at

anvil or bellows just as if she were doing nothing extraordinary. Various women's clubs In Kansas and other states have taken up the subject, and a very interesting paper wa3 read at one of them by an advanced woman suffragist reeentl3 In the course of her remarks this woman said: "The lesson which Miss Searle has taught us Bhould mean the regeneration of womanhood. We shall never escape from the thraldom which bind3 us like slaves to the mop, the scrub brush and the dish rag until we put ourselves exactly on the same level as the male. We must take our place at the forge and the carpenter's bench, as we have done at the loom and at the counter. We must sail shi?a rst guns, blast rock? ..-nd mine metals. The woman of the twentieth century will l revelation. Sh will no longer be the timid, shrinking shadow of lordly and domineering man. She will ask no quarter in fighting the world's battle. She will take only when sh can give. She will till the soil and mine the mountains. She will run locomotives and drive electric motors, play football and baseball and do anything and everything to develop that side of her nature which has lain dormant for centuries, thereby compelling her to be the weaker vessel."

Cw Worshiper In Africa. Dr. A. Donaldson Smith writes: "In Central Africa, among the Katu. I discovered these people to be cow worshipers and to indulge In certain rites which were supposed to be peculiar to the Hindoo religion. Plastering themselves with cow dung and throwing bits of dried dung at every one and everything they liked seemed to be a matter of much import to them, and occasionally some old man or woman would bo quite unmerciful in giving mo a too generous dusting. The origin of thi3 cow worship Is presumably the same with the Katua as with the Hindoo, traceable to the great dependence placei upon the animal for sustenance. The Katua eat the cow, but all the people turn out when the beast Is killed and go through much ceremony." Pennsylvania Grit.

Cllves Royalty Mot Statues. There are only four statues In the United Kingdom erected to the memory of women other than royalties. The first statue of a woman erected In England was that of Sister Dora, the Walsall nurse; the second was that of Mrs. Slddons, the third Flora Macdonald, and the fourth that unveiled at Dunoon a year or two ago In memory of Burns' "Highland Mary." Franklin Miles, M. D., LI- It, the Celebrated Chicago Specialist, Will Send 8M.SO Worth of Ills New Special Treatment Free to Each of Our Readers. When an experienced physician offers to give away f4O,000 worth of a New Treatment for diseases of the heart, nerves, stomach, or dropsy, it is conclusive evidence that he has great faith in it. And wbea hundreds of prominent men and women freely testify to his unusual skill and the superiority of his New Special Treatment his lilierality is certainly worthy of serious consideration. That Dr. Miles is one of the world's most successful physicians is proven by hundreds of testimonials from well-known people. One patient cured after failure of eleven Grand Rapids physicians, two after being given up by six and seven Chicago physicians, another after nine of the leading doctors in New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago failed. Thousands of testimonials sent upon request. The eminent Rev. W. Bell, D. D., of Dayton. Ohio, General Secretary of Foreign Missions, writes editorially in The Mate Sunday School Union: "We desire to state that from personal acquaintance we know Dr. Miles to be a most skillful specialist, a man who has spared neither labor nor money to keep himself abreast of the great advancement of medical science." The late Prof. J. S. Jewell. M. D.. said: "By all means publish your surprising results." Prof. J. P. Ross. M. D., Ex-President of Rush Medical College, wrote in 1874: "Dr. Miles has taken two courses of my private instruction in diseases of the heart and lungs." Mi. Truman DeWeese, editor Chicago TimesHerald, states: "Dr. Miles cured me of years of inherited headache and dizziness." The well-known manufacturer of Freeport, 111., J. C. Scott, says: "I had fruitlessly spent thousands of dollars on Physicians until 1 consulted Dr. Miles." Irs. Frank Smith, of Wabash Ave., Chicago, writes: "Dr. Miles cured me or dropsy after five leading physicians had given me up." This new system of special treatment is thoroughly scientific and immensely superior to the ordinary methods. As all afflicted readers may have $2.50 worth of treatment, especially prepared for their case, free, with full directions, we would advise them to end for it at once. Address Dr. Franklyn Miles, 203 to 207 State St., Dept. L, Chicago. Mention this paper. "DEALING WITH CRIMES IN CANADA." (From the Chicago Times-Herald, on Jan. 12th, 1901.) The citizens of the Dominion of Canada have just cause to be proud of their record as law-abiding people. The annual report of the criminal statistics of the Dominion, which has a population cf over 6,000,000, shows that there were only twenty-five indictments for murder in 1899, of which only two were left without final action. Eleven of those indicted were hanged, nine acquitted and three confined as insane. Canada is a country of vast proportions. Its people are scattered over a wide stretch of territory, making police surveillance particularly difficult and in many districts impossible. Yet a city like New York or Chicago alone furnishes a far greater criminal list every year than the whole vast stretch of territory from Quebec to Vancouver. The Canadians ascribe their immunity from crime to the promptness with which punishment is meted out to offenders. When a man is caught red-handed in the act of robbing another he is not released on straw bail by some justice of the peace from the slums, to go out and repeat the offense. Sharp and sure justice is meted out to criminals of all kinds, the result being that when the guardians of the public peace succeed in bringing a thug to the bar they are seldom called upon to hunt him a second time. Furthermore, there are few court delays in Canada when a criminal is brought to book. They have no Dreyer cases over there. There are no methods whereby Canadian criminals can have the proceedings stayed from month to month aid from year to year or after being convicted, appeal from one court to another until witnesses die of old age or opportunities for corruption can be found. Nor does this swift method of treating with wrong-doers in Canada leave the innoceitt unable to properly defend themsehs. They have all the opportunities and privileges that our own laws extend to them. The extent to shield the guilty is lacking that is all.

The above, taken from the editorial

column of the Times-Herald, gives some idea of the immunity from ciime

that exists in Canada, and this is one of the many inducements held out for Americans to settle in the district known as Western Canada. The sea

son of 1901 will see a few new sections

of the country opened up for settle

ment. They are attractive in every

respect. It is understood that one of

the best Indian Reserves in the famous

Valley of the Saskatchewan will be

opened up this year, and an lnvita

tion is extended to those desiring homes to make inquiries. The price of
