AN INFANT INDUSTRY. It Has ISeen Planted In tlio Plat's Ilil's, and Is ltclr.g Nursed. The recent flagging of a train by a Black Hills boy and the generous treatment accorded him by the passengers and railroad officials have resulted in inaugurating a new industry among the Black Hills boys. The other day some passengers, when at a station near where the flagging episode occurred, noticed a bright-faced, ragged urchin near the track. Hoping to get a sight of tho boy who had created so much favorable comment by his action a few days previously in tlagring the train and preventing what might have been a serious accident, some of the kind-hearted and hero-worshiping passengers asked the lad who ho was. He promptly replied: "I'm de kid wot flagged de keers t other day." Without stopping to verify his claim, they at once began tossing him nickels, dimes and quarters, and the lad profited by his deceit. Every urchin who puts in his time at the depots in that particular locality to see passing trains is now "the hoy who flagged the train," and unsuspecting passengers have ample opportunities to part with their spare change. A conservative estimate of Nebraska's corn crop, which is now safe from frost, is 300,000.000 bushels. It is hard for the mind to grasp what these figures mean. Counting CO bushels of shelled corn to the load, it would take five million team3 to haul the crop to market, a caravan that would reach around the world. It will take an army of SO.OO'J men over two months to husk it if they husk 00 bushels a day each. If loaded into cars of 20,000 capacity it would take C00.000 cars to haul the crop, a train over 4,000 miles long. At no time within the past ten years has there been such a tendency on the part of farmers to look for new locations, either to better themselves or to pro vide homes for their children. In reply to a letter from the editor of a St. Louis paper the governor has this to say: while no part of Illinois is a part of the Louisiana purchase, Illinois contiguity to and its commercial and social relations so interwoven with the people of that vast and fertile territory that we are perhaps as much interested in the prospective world's fair, to be held in St. Louis, as those living within the confines of the Louisiana purchase, and you can rely upon it that the people cf Illinois will contribute more loyally to the success of ths fair than any other state outside of Missouri. Personally and officially, while I am In office, I will do everything in my power to assist in making it a success. Yours very truly, "JOHN R. TANNER. Governor." Protected Against Kobber. Wealthy Samuel Do Yec who lives in Spotswood, N. J., has taken a new method to guard against the Joss of his wealth. Alarmed by the recent bank robberies at Perth Amboy, he has taken all his cash from a local bank and removed it to his home. Recently he called at the tank and tore in half all of his bonds. One-half of each he left in the bank and the other half he took home. Thus, he says, ho is secured against loss of robbery. The improvements that are being made to the Baltimore and Ohio South Western railroad between Parkcrsburg and East St. Louis are being pushed rapidly to completion. Seventeen thousand tons of S3 pound steel rails have been placed in the track, and there are still 25.000 tons to come, delivery being delayed on account of rush of orders at the mills. The company has also put in 123 miles of gravel ballast and expects to get out 200 miles more during the season, and it is hoped by Fall that the track will rank as the best in the west. A great many grade reductions and changes in line are also being made between Cincinnati and St. Louis. The purpose is to make a uniform one-half of one per cent grade between Cincinnati and St. Louis, as well as to eliminate a large amount of objectionable curvature. At one point, for instance, the line is to be shortened a mile and a half, 3G0 degrees of curvature eliminated and seven bridges abandoned.
