CASUALTIES. Philadelphia The Keystone paper mill was partially destroyed by fire. Loss, $70,000; partly covered by insurance. Whittier, Cal. The building containing the kitchen, commissary department, bakery and dining hall of the state reform school burned. Loss, $20.000; no insurance. Grand Rapids, Mich. Fire starting from defective electric wiring in the gymnasium damaged the Y. M. C. A. building to the extent of $10,000 to $13,000. Loss fully covered by insurance. Marinette, O. The saw mill of the Hamilton & Merryman Company was destroyed by fire. The inill was valued at $SO.O0t); insurance, $40,000. I. K. Hamilton of Chicago, who is here, say the mill will be rebuilt. Grape Creek. 111. Fire destroyed two depots of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad company, one here, the other at Perrysville, lnd. Stockton, Cal. A party of twenty young persons enjoying a ride in a catamaran on the river were precipitated into the water by the overturning of the boat. Miss Mabel Kafitz and Walter Henderson, the engineer, were drowned. Lyons. N. Y. An explosion of oil in the hardware store of J. S. Myers resulted in the most extensive conflagration Lyons has experienced in years. The loss to buildings and contents was about $40.000; partially insured. CRIME. Dayton, Ohio A young man named Abraham Herchberg leaped to his death from a tenth-story window. He was insane and an inmate of the state hospital at Columbus. Parkersburg, W. Va. Madge Gordon, 13 years old, is indicted for peddling "moonshine" whisky. Rock House, Ky. While acting as peacemaker between John Moore and Chris Craft, William Maggard was shot dead by Craft. Ann Arbor, Mich. Acting on a report made to it by an investigating committee, which found that cruel treatment had been practiced at the Adrian Industrial School for Girls, the legislature adopted a resolution calling for a change of managers of the institution. Asheville, N. C W. J. Cocke, former cashier of the National Bank of Asheville, was arrested here on a warrant charging embezzlement. Middlesboro, Ky. William Bingham went to John Riddle's house, near Pineville, and calling him out, shot part of his head off with a shotgun. He then fled to the mountains. MISCELLANEOUS. Des Moines, Iowa At the annual meeting of the Swedish Lutheran Mission society it was decided to continue the publication of the official organ at North Park, Chicago, and to meet next year in Jamestown. N. Y. San Francisco John A. Magee has filed a petition in insolvency. His failure is ascribed to ill-advised Investments in the Klondike freighting trade and the steamer Humboldt last year. His losses are estimated at $122,00. Assets estimated at $3,000. Newport News, Va. The Master Carbuilders' Association of America adjourned after electing C. A. Schreyer president. Rouen Archbishop Sourrieu is dead. He was born in 1823 and was superior of several houses of missionaries. Washington United States Consul Johnson, at Arnoy, reports that the plague has broken out there. Waukegan, III. Local churches are endeavoring to have the mayor enforce the law prohibiting baseball playing on Sunday. Petitions to that effect have been circulated and generally signed. Janesville, Wis. Gov. Scofield has appointed Benjamin F. Dunwiddie of Janesvilie judge of the Twelfth judicial district of Wisconsin, to fill the unexpired term of Judge John R. Bennett, deceased. West Bay City, Mich. The deal whereby the big shipyard of F. W. Wheeler passed into the American ship building trust was closed. Two weeks ago the yard was appraised at $700,000. Denver, Colo. Thousands of railroad and other organized union men may become Involved in the strike of smelters in Colorado. Unless the strike Is settled within three days 20,000 men will be out of employment. Madrid In the chamber of deputies Gen. Polavieja announced that the Spanish commission at Manila had gone to confer with Aguinaldo regarding the Spanish prisoners in the hands of the Filipinos. Madrid The senate adopted the bill ceding the Caroline and other islands to Germany.

Good crops in all the world in the years 18JS-y3 will probably make our export figures for the fiscal year abcut to end a few million dollars less titan those cf the banner year ISUit. The figures covering the exports during the eleven months ended with May, which have been received by the treasury bureau of statistics, indicate that during the eleven months the total exports are about $6.000,000 less than those of the corresponding months of the preceding year, and it is quite probable that the total for the full year will be slightly below those of the great and unprecedented year 1S98. That they will be much in excess of any other year, however, is equally apparent. For the eleven months of the year 1899 the total exports are $1,130,(529.572. while in no earlier year except 1S98 did the total exports of the eleven months reach the billion-dollar line. Thirteen Canadian Miner Killed. Two explosions in the Caledonia mine at Giace bay. Cape Breton, the principal colliery of the Dominion Coal company, caused the death of thirteen men. The cause of the explosion has not yet been definitely ascertained. Storm Damages Illinois Town. June !?, at 5 p. m., the city of Carterville, in Williamson county. 111., was struck by a cyclone. No lives were lost. The Hampton drug store, Washburn's hardware store and Murphy's salocn were damaged. VIEW OF Zeltner Sentenced for Life. At Bowling Green, Ohio. Paul Ze!tner, one of the slayers of Attorney E. II. Westenhaver, was found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to the penitentiary for life, without a chance of pardon. Coal Miners Strike Growing. The coal strike in the bituminous region of Pennsylvania now involves the mines at Crenshaw, Bagus, Toby, Brock and Shawrnut. This gives the strikers a re-enforcement of over 1,000 men. I'attsciiger Train Held I'p. Passenger train No. 1, on the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf railroad, was held up by the Cook gang of outlaws three miles south of Poteau. I. T. The amount of booty secured will reach $2,500. Keport of Army Casualties. The total casualties of the army from Feb. 4 to June C, including enlisted men, are as follows: Killed, 226; died of wound?. Johnson, acting commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, has called a meeting of the pension committee of that body in Washington, July 11. Trade Itulance With I s. The balance of trade in favor of the United States for the eleven months ending with May was $195,267,053, an increase of $23.547,869 over the same period last year. The World's Wheat Crop. The world's wheat crop of 1S99 is placed at 2,504,000.000 bushels, against 2,748,000,000 bushels in 1898, a reduction of 244,000,000 bushels, or nearly 8.9 per cent. Can Manufacture Artificial Coal. It is announced that a workman named Montag, living in Mannheim, Baden, has succeeded in manufacturing artificial coal from earth and mineral substances. Imp Wins Suburban Handicap. Haines & Brossman's Imp won the Suburban race by two lengths and set aside the mark of 2:06 1-5 established by Ramapo in 1S94. Imp's tim-3 was 2:05 4-5.
RICHARD PARKS BLAND DEAD. raaous Champion of Silver I'asses Away at Lebanon, Mo. The Hon. R. P. Bland died at Lebanon, Mo., early in the morning of June 13. The funeral took place at Lebanon at 4 o'clock Saturday, June 17. Mr. Bland's remains were placed in the opera-house and lay in state for twenty-four hours. The funeral was conducted by the Masonic order, and all the ministers of Lebanon assisted. Richard Park Bland was born near Hartford. Ohio county, Ky., Aug. 19. 1S3Ö. He was left an orphan at an early a$,e. In 1S53 he left Kentucky and went to Missouri. Shortly after he moved to California and later to Virginia City, Ncv. In 18C9 he settled in Lebanon, where he followed the profession cf law. In 1S73 he was elected to the XLIIId congress, and was returned to the XLIVth. XLVth. XLVIth, XLVIIth, XLVIIIth. VLIXth, Lth, List. Llld. and LUId. He was not a member of the LIVth congress, but was elected to the LVth as a silver democrat. He was also elected to the LVIth congress. In 1S9G he was a candidate for the nomination for president before the democratic national convention. He was defeated by William J. Bryan. Mr. Bland was one of the original silver men and was the author of the famous Bland bill. Home for Odd Fellow. Representative Odd Fellows from all parts of Minnesota. Wisconsin and the Dakotas witnessed the laying of the corner-stone of the new Minnesota Odd Fellows' Home and Orphan Asylum at Northfield, Minn. Anti-Canteen Iav I Valid. The judge advocate general of the war department has rendered an opinion in which he holds the anti-canteen law valid and prohibitory. MacArthur'a Troops Kasily Defeat a Haid of the Insurgents. Philippine insurgents concentrated a large force near San Fernando and attacked MacArthur's troops. The enemy was quickly driven back, leaving over fifty dead on the field and a large number wounded. Our casualties were fourteen wounded, mostly very slgiht. The attack is believed to have been under the personal direction of Aguinaldo. CANADA SENDS ULTIMATUM. Insists on Her Demands as to the Alaskan Boundary. Canada is said to have served notice on Great Britain that she must choose between -the friendship of the United States and her North American dominion in the settlement of the Alaskan boundary question. Yellow Fever at Havana. William Kehrer, a private in the marine corps, on duty at the naval station at Havana, died of yellow fever. Havenieyer Tells Why Our Knormous Trusts Kxist. Henry O. Havemeyer, president of the American Sugar Refining company, in a statement before the industrial commission, blamed the existence of trusts upon the high protective duties now in force. Mr. Havemeyer asserted that a tariff of 10 per cent was as high as any tariff should be. He also said he thought the farmers should form a trust for their own protection. GEN. LAVVTON ENTERSBAC00R.
