Wince, of Pierceton. who is a member of the Church of God, preached the funeral of Dr. J. S. Leland at Argos today. W. II. Albert left lor Indianapolis this noon wnere he will attend the Odd Fellows meeting as a delegate from the home lodge. Contractors all over Indiana have be gun to ease up on street and sewer im provements until they hear from the Barrett law's conbtitutionality. Mrs. J. W. Devis, Sr. and Mrs. John Ames of Bourbon, were the guests of C. C. Vink's family Monday evening The ladies were on their way to Indi anapolis to attend the Daughters of Rebekah Assembly. A district Sunday-school convention of theU. B. Church is being held at Tyner. Among those attending are Rev. Spitier and Rev. Martin of Bour bon, Rev. Butler, Rev. Byrer and wife, and Rev. Parrett of Warsaw. Many rural weather prophets say that this will be a dry summer. They say that only a certain amount of rain falls each year, and that this year has nearly had its portion. There has been plenty of rain so far, and Hicks is pre dieting more. Greentown has 2,500 people and no mayor, no policeman and no expense tor municipal office holders. The town is governed entirel) by a board of trustees who meet once a month and allow electric light, water, gas and other claims. E. 15. Taylor, general superintendent of transportation of the Pennsylvania lines west, says the passenger equip ment of the Pan Handle and the Pitts burg, Fort Wayne & Chicago is now in better condition than ever before in the history of these lines. If a rich man disagrees with those in power he is called eccentric; if he has some wealth he is a crank, and if he has no money at all he is called a fool. If he is on the tramp order he is called an idiot and locked up. "Money makes the mare go" is a pretty true saying. Ex. Valparaiso Commandery No. 28, K T., gave a reception to the n embers and their families of Valpariso Chapter No. 7D, Porter Lodge No. 137, and Val paraiso Chapter No. 161, O. E. S., last evening in honor of Hon. II. G. Thayer of this city who was the guest of the Commandery. A United States Fish Commissioner passed through Goshen this morning with eight jars of minnows for Eagle Lake, Warsaw. Krider, a soldier in the Philippines who was wounded twenty-six times and reported dead twice. Still he lives to tell his story. The account becomes of local interest when we learn that Mr. Krider is a nephew of Mrs. Wm. Craig of this city. He says he would not take a thousand dollars for his exper ience so far. The Undtrwood vs. Stein case which was placed on the docket for this date at Rochester has been dropped. In this case A. It. Underwood sought to recover damages of Mr. Stein on ac count of an attack from Mr. Stein's dog last summer. Matters were adjusted this morning to the satisfaction of both parties, without any formal proceedings. Yesterday Herbert (Jibson had a nar row escape from lightning. He was driving his buggy near the Liggett school house and was passing a tele phone pole when the same was shat tered like glasB, by a heavy thunderbolt. Hoth he and his horse received a severe electric shock. A number of men sev eral rods away received distinct ßhocks and expressed their wonder that the horse and its driver were not killed. Attorneys II e6s, Logan and Martindale appeared betöre the court tit Kcox yesterday and protested against the heavy levies on Marshall county property for the proposed big ditch, the greater part of which drains Starke county land. The court acceded in a measure to their demands and ordered the plat and report concernirg the ditch referred back to the drainage commissioners. A new report with several important changes, wiil probably follow later. The Valparaiso Messenger in giving an account of the reception to Hon. II. (J. Thayer Monday evening says that Mr. Thayer'a address was "a most excellent and instructive exposition of Free Masonry and gave even to the oldest members of the fraternity information for which they had long sought and had never been able to lind." The following morning Mr. and Mrs. Thayer visited the chapel exercises at the college auditorium where Mr. Thayer addressed the students. The static machine for generating electricity which has been added to the physical labratory at the Washington building is a model for neatness and good work. ' It was manufactured and

set up by Arthur O'Keefe who took the hint of its mechanism from the machine on exhibition at Slayter's drug store not many weeks ago. It answers all experiments perfectly. Illuminations in Geisler's tubes are produced with ease and Leyden jars are charged with tuavy bolts of electricity. Krom Thursday's Dally. Hill and family. The jury has been called for next ueek. Considerable interest will be manifested next term. Tom Wall? er went to Muncie this evening where he a ill attend the funeral of Mrs. Frank üvon. The Improvement company are puting down a sidewalk for the distance of six blocks along Liberty street. John Nichols will leave Friday for South Hoston, Va., with the view ot buying land. He will be absent about one month. The marshal is in possession of a large list of truant school children who will be compelled to attend school the rest of this term. Wm. Kile has shipped material to Benton county for a sixty foot bridge and will commence the erection of the same immediately. Farmers are everywhere complaining of the tiy. Never before has this trou blesome pest visited thf wheat this early in the spring. Valparaiso citizens are making a strong effort in favor of municipal ownership of their waterworks. It is a movement in the right direction. A Monticello saloon keeper assaulted a citizen who circulated a remonstrance against him, and he has just been sen tenced to six months in jail and to pay a fine of $400. Mrs. Lew Swearengin and two little daughters Francis and Lola went to Logansport today where they will join Mr. Swearengin. Mr. Swearengin has located in that city. Among the members of the county council of St. Joseph are Hon. Clem Studebaker and Joseph D. Oliver, two Indiana millionaires. They ought to make good otlicials. Miss Flo Moore entertained a party of young ladies and gentlemen at her home in the country last eveuing Re freshments were served and a delight ful time was the result. The Heed band hive announced their intention of commencing a series of open air concerts on the first Saturday next month. They will make their debut on Decoration day. Tonight marks the last session of the Young Peoples Christain Union con vention at Tyner. On the whole the meeting has been one of the most suc cessful ever conducted in the county. Joseph M. Hoffman, former superin tendent of the Laporte county infirmary, died Monday evening at Laporte after a week's illness of a complication of lung aud throat disease. He was G7 years old. Maxenkuckee is becoming the Mecca for fisherman. Those chronic fisherman who have dangled their lines in running waters in other years now ilock to the lake to unburden themselves of their desire for the sport. Chris. Manuel has struck an artesian well upon his property in East Plym outh. The pipe was driven on the side of a gently sloping hill and the water gushes eeveral feet from the surface of the ground in a solid column of crystal. The Ladies Mozart Club of Plymouth will give a grand concert in the opera house, Plymouth, on May 2G, 18W. Ad mission 25 cents.
